With the passing of perhaps one of the most ridiculous propositions of the last 10 years, many celebs are speaking out.
And the recently-married Ellen DeGeneres is among those that are speaking out about this injustice.
In a statement released by DeGeneres says:
"Watching the returns on election night was an amazing experience. Barack Obama is our new president. Change is here. I, like millions of Americans, felt like we had taken a giant step towards equality. We were watching history.
This morning, when it was clear that Proposition 8 had passed in California, I can’t explain the feeling I had. I was saddened beyond belief. Here we just had a giant step towards equality and then on the very next day, we took a giant step away.
I believe one day a 'ban on gay marriage' will sound totally ridiculous. In the meantime, I will continue to speak out for equality for all of us."

Re: Milkie – They have the right to join in all the civil rights you have. It's just legal paperwork. They have the same rights you do- if they wed someone of the opposite sex it is called marriage and that is what is on the books. They can make a law to make it easier- though getting married is too easy for everyone- by just calling it something else. The question could be asked WHY do they feel they have to take a heterosexual word and apply it to a homosexual union? It may mean nothing to YOU for them to use that historic and traditionally rich word, but evidently a lot of other people care about it.

My heart breaks for them. We don't need more people in the world. Reproduction needs to be limited. LOOK AT CHINA. They have literal restrictions. Oh, and if worse comes to worst, WOMEN CAN REPRODUCE ALL BY THEMSELVES!!!
I have no problem with sexual preference, but the people have spoken TWICE now. The fact is most Americans feel MARRIAGE should be between a man and woman. What's next? Man and dog? Where does it stop. Most companies will recognize civil unions and afford benefits to gay couples. Let it be. The unbelievable thing is the amount of money spent on this. The rest of the country think you CA people are from another planet!
Just because a miniscule part of the population wants everyone to condone what they think is right, does not make it right. Sorry.

I am a Justice of the Peace who lives in Massachusetts. I marry same-sex-couples all the time here and I am happy to do so. And guess what people, since it has become legal for same-sex-couples to get married here, THE SKY DID NOT FALL DOWN AND MASSACHUSETTS DID NOT COME TO AN END! Don't let what happened in California get you down. Someday, these people will see the light. I encourage anyone in California who wants to get legally married to come to Massachusetts. Set an example that you will not be brought down. Visit mjpa.org to find a Massachusetts Justice of the Peace and fight back! The more people go to another state to make their marriage legal, the more revenue California will lose. At some point this will make them overturn this horrible Proposition 8.

marraige is not a hetrosexual word. to claim it is egotistical. the point is is that it is a public declaration of commitment to demonstrate the bonds of love. if individual churches wish to not recognize it as such, that is their legal right under freedom of religion, but marriage is also a legal institution. the word marriage is shared by church and state, but the legal distinction between the two is clear. once a right is granted to one it must be granted to all. to deny that right is unconstitutional and that is how our country works period. CIVIL RIGHTS FOR ALL.

BUT, they are asking people to vote for it to be ok, and there are a lot of Christians that cannot put their vote on something that the Bible specifically says is wrong. It's just morals and you can't blast people for that. If I lived in CA, I would vote against it as well. Gay people don't bother me, if they want to be gay, that is their own choice. I have gay friends. But I'm a Christian and I couldn't vote and say "ok, let them get married" knowing it's against my beliefs. Why do gay people want to get married so bad anyway? In a world that festers in thick gunky hatred that the rest of us have to wade through, hearing things like that are the oxygen bubbles we need to breath deep, refocus and keep going. My life is interesting. I am not where I want to be right now. I have a good paying job and all that, but finding and admiting truths about ourselves–myself–that disrupt tradition and comfort zones is difficult. If you pay your taxes and obey the laws you should have equal rights. Gay people should stop paying taxes since they have less rights then the rest of us. The only people complaining about gays being married are the people who are secretly gay and are too cowardly to come out.

The issue and the stakes are about the institution of marriage and not changing its definition just because it suits somebody's needs at the moment. If we allow marriage to be defined by current social "sensitivities," there will be no right to deny marriage to other non-traditional groups. Once we start down that road, there's no telling what we as a society will be forced to recognize as "marriage."
There are prohibitions against marrying direct family members. Fathers cannot marry daughters, mothers their sons, brothers and sisters cannot wed, even first cousins are barred from marriage. If we change the definition of marriage to allow same sex couples to marry, would we have the right to deny familial weddings?
What about multiple spouses? If same sex couples are allowed to wed, how can we prevent people from marrying multiple partners? And I speak not just of a man marrying more than one woman. Women would have to be allowed to marry more than one man. Come to think of it, men would be allowed to marry more than one man, and women would be allowed to have multiple wives also. Why not? Marriage is whatever we define it as, right?

It's amazing how our race for the presidency has become a civil rights movement. I am not trying pretend that the past didn't happen, BUT- in my generation, equality has been a reality since I was a kid. I have NEVER seen a bus or bathroom that didn't allow black people. I come from the age of affirmative action. Oprah Winfrey has been one of the most successful and wealthy people in the world as far back as I can remember. There are African-American judges, cops, college graduates, athletes (who are amongst the highest paid people in the world) and I guess I just don't see why it had to be about the color of his skin. It seems to me that the people that made that an issue is the African-American community, so in turn, doesn't it seem like they are holding THEMSELVES down? I would like to go ONE DAY without hearing about white people being prejudice. Oprah Winfrey and Jesse Jackson are to of the most racist people I have ever heard open their mouths. In Barack Obama's acceptance speech, I felt like I was listening to Martin Luther King Jr. preach about civil rights, not listening to someone tell me that they want to fix a broken economy…. Obama isn't ready to be president if he isn't ready to NOT pull the race card…Sorry…That's the reality of it.

The fact is that marriage is a religious rite. Not all of us are religious. But religion has been around for thousands of years…and religion has serious traditional undertones. I am not religious, but I still think that if you're trying to get married, and you're gay, it makes no sense because marriage is a religious rite. If you're not following the traditional religious beliefs of that group… you shouldn't be forcing yourself through those church doors.

marriage predates christianity by thousands of years. if individual churches wish to not recognize gay marriage that is their legal right under freedom of religion, but marriage is ALSO a legal institution. marriage is shared by church and state, but the legal distinction between the two is clear. once a right is granted to one it must be granted to all. to deny that right is unconstitutional and that is how our country works period. We are all equal in the eyes of the law and this discrimination should not be tolerated.
