Melissa Ethridge Shouldn't Have To Pay Taxes

With the passing of that stupid Proposition 8 in California, many celebs are speaking out such as Ellen DeGeneres did.
Well, singer Melissa Etheridge is speaking out as well.
Ethridge planned to legally marry her partner Tammy Lynn back in early October. But with the new proposition, the right for gays to marry is gone.
And Ethridge isn't too pleased about that. In fact, she thinks she shouldn't have to pay taxes. What for? She's not being treated like a regular citizen, why pay like one?
Ethridge took the time to write a response to the proposition, and here is some of what she has to say:
"Okay. So Prop 8 passed. Alright, I get it. 51% of you think that I am a second class citizen. Alright then. So my wife, uh I mean, roommate? Girlfriend? Special lady friend? You are gonna have to help me here because I am not sure what to call her now. Anyways, she and I are not allowed the same right under the state constitution as any other citizen. Okay, so I am taking that to mean I do not have to pay my state taxes because I am not a full citizen. I mean that would just be wrong, to make someone pay taxes and not give them the same rights, sounds sort of like that taxation without representation thing from the history books.
Okay, cool I don't mean to get too personal here but there is a lot I can do with the extra half a million dollars that I will be keeping instead of handing it over to the state of California. Oh, and I am sure Ellen will be a little excited to keep her bazillion bucks that she pays in taxes too. Wow, come to think of it, there are quite a few of us fortunate gay folks that will be having some extra cash this year. What recession? We're gay!
Oh and too bad California, I know you were looking forward to the revenue from all of those extra marriages. I guess you will have to find some other way to get out of the budget trouble you are in.
When did it become okay to legislate morality? I try to envision someone reading that legislation "eliminates the right" and then clicking yes. What goes through their mind? Was it the frightening commercial where the little girl comes home and says, "Hi mom, we learned about gays in class today" and then the mother gets that awful worried look and the scary music plays? Do they not know anyone who is gay? If they do, can they look them in the face and say "I believe you do not deserve the same rights as me"? Do they think that their children will never encounter a gay person? Do they think they will never have to explain the 20% of us who are gay and living and working side by side with all the citizens of California?
I got news for them, someday your child is going to come home and ask you what a gay person is. Gay people are born everyday. You will never legislate that away."

So it looks like you have the blacks to blame and not the conservatives. The Sac Bee, one of the most liberal papers on the face of the earth is reporting that 70% of black voters voted yes on 8. And, we all know how conservative blacks are.

Without marriage, those rights are stripped. So please don't say that marriage is only faith related. Marriage grants many benefits. Go take a look at your W4. It says Single, Married, Divorced. Where's the Civil Union box? IT DOESN'T EXIST! Marriage so entrentched in benefits and basic rights it is unbelievable. Do NOT try to make this only faith based. that's exactly what did it. otherwise reasonable, nonhomophobic individuals were afraid that their kids were going to be taught about about same-sex marriage in school. the "yes on 8" campaign did a good job of making that the key issue. it was a total red herring, but it worked. the "no on 8" people should have done more to combat that argument. the tried to keep the debate centered around the issues of fairness and equality. that was a mistake. they had one commercial featuring california's superintendent of schools, jack o'connell addressing the issue, but that was quickly countered with a commerical saying that he was lying and that his own website stated that schools must teach about marriage. why didn't they respond to that? the mistake was that they thought that people would be rational with their vote. they asked "how could anybody want to write discrimination into the state's constitution?" the answer is that nobody really wants discrimination. they were reacting out of fear.

The California constitution does NOT state ANYWHERE about marriage being between a man and a woman. Prop 8 is REDEFINING it to include "between 1 man and 1 woman" so before you go off spouting untruths, why don't you do a little research.
I wonder how these Californians that voted for Prop 8 would vote on a divorce ban as well. You know, pass a law that makes divorces illegal, so that the person you marry is your spouse for life, or until death do they part, just like the empty rhetoric they speak in their vows. Heterosexuals are always talking about the sanctity of marriage when the whole gay marriage thing pops up, although they can't give a real intelligent argument on how gay marriage would destroy the sanctity of their own. And yet it is estimated that 50% of first marriages end in divorce. So these people that go up to a priest and exchange their vows in front of their God and break those vows aren't really being sanctified, are they?
The argument here is that she doesn't owe taxes because the ban of gay marriage means the same thing as taxation without representation. Taxation without representation is when the governing body places taxes on good and services without providing you a way to have a say in it… ie. voting for a representative. The ban has not taken away anyone's right to vote for their representatives. I support gay marriage, but this a weak argument.

In my high school sex ed class, I remember several topics that were NOT covered, including homosexuality and what an angel kiss was. They were not appropriate for the classroom and the teacher wasn't about to launch into a discussion about either one, and went back to talking about relevant biology of the uterus.

With California being such a liberal state and STILL voting yes, I think it's time to cut your losses and just be happy to be in love and be thankful for Domestic Partnership. I didn't vote on 8. I felt that it was too broad of an issue to nail down in one part. I don't care if they get married or makeout or whatever, that's their business, but I do care who tells my children about homosexuality, that's my business. I also suggest you look at the history of marriage as an institution in this country. You'll find that it's not as fairy tale like as you seem to think it is. Let's go back to the time when women surrendered all their rights to their husbands, where her property became his, where all decisions about the child's welfare is made by the man of the house, where women could be married off by their family as young as the age of 13, where women were married off for dowries, and on and on.
