Melissa Ethridge Shouldn't Have To Pay Taxes

Filed under: Politik > Melissa Etheridge

wenn1258477__opt.jpg

With the passing of that stupid Proposition 8 in California, many celebs are speaking out such as Ellen DeGeneres did.

Well, singer Melissa Etheridge is speaking out as well.

Ethridge planned to legally marry her partner Tammy Lynn back in early October. But with the new proposition, the right for gays to marry is gone.

And Ethridge isn't too pleased about that. In fact, she thinks she shouldn't have to pay taxes. What for? She's not being treated like a regular citizen, why pay like one?

Ethridge took the time to write a response to the proposition, and here is some of what she has to say:

"Okay. So Prop 8 passed. Alright, I get it. 51% of you think that I am a second class citizen. Alright then. So my wife, uh I mean, roommate? Girlfriend? Special lady friend? You are gonna have to help me here because I am not sure what to call her now. Anyways, she and I are not allowed the same right under the state constitution as any other citizen. Okay, so I am taking that to mean I do not have to pay my state taxes because I am not a full citizen. I mean that would just be wrong, to make someone pay taxes and not give them the same rights, sounds sort of like that taxation without representation thing from the history books.

Okay, cool I don't mean to get too personal here but there is a lot I can do with the extra half a million dollars that I will be keeping instead of handing it over to the state of California. Oh, and I am sure Ellen will be a little excited to keep her bazillion bucks that she pays in taxes too. Wow, come to think of it, there are quite a few of us fortunate gay folks that will be having some extra cash this year. What recession? We're gay!

Oh and too bad California, I know you were looking forward to the revenue from all of those extra marriages. I guess you will have to find some other way to get out of the budget trouble you are in.

When did it become okay to legislate morality? I try to envision someone reading that legislation "eliminates the right" and then clicking yes. What goes through their mind? Was it the frightening commercial where the little girl comes home and says, "Hi mom, we learned about gays in class today" and then the mother gets that awful worried look and the scary music plays? Do they not know anyone who is gay? If they do, can they look them in the face and say "I believe you do not deserve the same rights as me"? Do they think that their children will never encounter a gay person? Do they think they will never have to explain the 20% of us who are gay and living and working side by side with all the citizens of California?

I got news for them, someday your child is going to come home and ask you what a gay person is. Gay people are born everyday. You will never legislate that away."

Re: Kilee Lynn – Ummm, I think we've procreated a little too much, don't ya think dear??? Repeat after me: J CURVE. Go and google that. We are exponentially expanding. Pretty soon, the earth will not be able to support us. Meanwhile, we have millions of unwanted children in orphanages damned to be derelicts through no communication, love, nutrition, etc. Gay and Lesbian couples can adopt those children and make their lives a whole lot better then some of the documentaries I've seen. I WATCHED LITTLE BABIES ROLLING AROUND IN THEIR OWN FECES. It was on hidden camera in an orphanage in Romania. Maybe God is giving us another choice–a way to help the children, the world, and gay families all at once. If anything, God has given us an answer–hope for these badly neglected children. My heart breaks for them. We don't need more people in the world. Reproduction needs to be limited. LOOK AT CHINA. They have literal restrictions. Oh, and if worse comes to worst, WOMEN CAN REPRODUCE ALL BY THEMSELVES!!! I have already written about this, but clearly other's like yourself need to re-read.

  2. 302

Re: Kilee Lynn – entitled, oops haha.

  3. 303

Re: dansergrrl – Danser, do you ever just feel like you are beating against a brick wall? I do. This is fatiguing, and sometimes I feel like no matter how hard I try, how many hard facts I bring to the table, some people would prefer to be blind. It's really dispiriting.

  4. 304

Re: mattc101 – I thought that being liberal meant being "open-minded." But, you apparently think it means "believing the way I do." Because I don't agree with you, I'm sure you think I'm close-minded. To enlighten you a little, being open-minded means "respecting everyone's opinion." That doesn't mean you have to agree with me or anything. But by telling me I'm a disturbed person, or ignorant, or whatever it is you think, that's being close-minded. I'm respecting your opinion that you think gays should marry. Believe me, I used to think that it was ok for gays to marry. But I thought differently about it and that's the way I believe. See? I can think other things, I just choose to think this way. I respect my friends opinions who disagree with me. They respect my opinions about the environment. I'm open to anyone who talks to me because I like to educate myself and see how others view life, what their values and opinions are, etc. And that's being open-minded.

    Re: Kilee Lynn

"Men and women can be together based on the facts of life, that's how it's been since the beginning. What do gay people do with each other? Finger each other? Have buttsex? Wear strap-ons? It's not real sex and it doesn't mean anything. "

It's comments like those that explain why some people are so against homosexuality. They're too busy wondering what gays are doing in the bedroom. It's always the ones who try to preach morality that have the dirtiest thoughts. But going back to your questions, if gay sex isn't real sex, then neither is two breeders having sex with a condom, or if the girl is on the pill. I guess straights shouldn't be having kinky sex in the bedroom anymore either, if it's not real. No more chains and whips, toe-sucking, butt slapping, candle dripping, role playing fun. I mean, after all, isn't sex for only for procreation? We're not supposed to enjoy it.

  6. 306

Matt, why don't you give up already?

Genesis has clearly stated that religion does not play a factor. Maybe you need to go back to second grade or something.

And we're still waiting for your reason as to why gays should be together, LOVE aside!

You lost, and GENESIS has clearly won.

    It's over budddy.

  7. 307

Re: ashbert13 – Actually, american populations are only increasing due to imigration and longer life expectency. I believe us residents are only reproducing to about 90% (1.8 children per couple) but i cannot cite my references. In any case the ban is stupid. It did come about because of the FDR principal that the government had to "fix" all those problems in the world. Give the government the power to give, you inherently give the government the power to take away. We don't need a grand master babysitter any more than we need to worry about what terms of endearment two ladies refer to each other as.

  8. 308

    Re: Kilee Lynn

Yes! So quit saying we're hateful, ignorant, or homophobes. You are very close minded if you think just because we don't think like you, that we are a certain way.

And yes, this very nation was built on religion, so if you don't like it, move out.

    Hmm, "Under God, indivisble…"
    "In God We Trust"…

  9. 309

Re: ashbert13 – I agree we've procreated a little too much. I'm an environmentalist and I'm glad that you, too understand that. The earth is way over-populated, but that doesn't mean we should just let go of our morals. I don't think it matters if you're gay, anybody can adopt. I hope to adopt children in the future to give them a place to live, but to also limit MY actual children to just one or two, as to avoid over-population.

  10. 310

Re: mattc101 – How is it taking constitutional rights away from others? I just don't think it's appropriate for two men or two women to be together. I'm not trying to foster hate because I respect my gay friends and love them unconditionally, but it doesn't mean I agree with their choices and they respect that about me. Just because I don't agree with you doesn't mean I'm hateful. Geez, I hate trying to have adult conversations with people where you can just express an opinion, but people either won't listen, won't understand, or are just plain stupid. Seriously, are you in high school? Do you not realize that people can think differently and still be good people? I don't want you to insult me, because I have been respectful towards you. And for what? That's what I can't stand. Be open-minded towards my opinions and why I might think that way, the way I am being towards yours.

  11. 311

Re: DanielDax – That doesn't mean I have a dirty mind, and I don't only think about what gay people do in the bedroom. That's wrong of you to assume, because I happen to have a very open mind. But I'm sorry, I really did try to make sense about what you're saying about condoms, and I'm not trying to be rude but I just don't think that applies here. Those are two totally different subjects. Fine, yes, sex is fun, be kinky, whatever, experiment with people of the same sex. THE BOTTOM LINE IS: it is not meant to be like that, for gays to be together. You can do whatever you want, but that's not how life is formed.

  12. 312

Re: LVlove – 308 - Gays "should" be together because they WANT to be, just like you WANT to be with whomever you are with. Whether it is because they want a life partner, to raise children, or yes, maybe just to "have butt sex" as was so rudely stated earlier. Gay people "should" be together for EXACTLY the same reasons straight people "should" be together. Genesis did not win ANY argument in my opinion. The debate goes on…

  13. 313

She's 100% completely right. Why should I pay taxes if I can't even marry my partner? It makes no sense to me.

  14. 314

Re: LVlove – Actually, I don't know what your point is, I agree with you and Genesis and I am against gay marriage…my point is that putting God aside, based on the facts of life, being gay is still wrong. And I never said I WASN'T religious, either. I just don't think that should be the issue because the "liberals" can't think of any better arguments than that I would be close minded because I believed in God, so I'm just trying to relate to them a little more.

  15. 315

Re: LVlove – You say marriage is about procreation. So a straight man or woman who is unable to procreate should be denied their right to marriage? Most, if not all women reach a point in their lives where they can no longer procreate. Under your logic, at that point, her marriage should be dissolved, and all the privilages that come with it.

  16. 316

Re: The World is Now a Scary Place – Sorry, I didn't mean to make a rude comment about "buttsex" and I'm sorry if you or others took it that way. I was just trying to make a point about how it is impossible for gays to have children and that is a way of life. Not that you have to, but that's where everyone comes from and if everyone chose a gay lifestyle then life would shortly end on the planet.

  17. 317

And to respond to another comment I read. Civil Unions are ILLEGAL as stated by the decision that separate but equal is ILLEGAL. Let me repeat, separate but equal is ILLEGAL. Yeah you get the same rights, but it's separated by name because gays aren't good enough to "marry"? Furthermore, this whole "protect the sanctity of marriage" garbage needs to be left out of it because most marriages end up in divorce anyways! So should we ban marriage in general to protect its sanctity? I don't think so. But I'm just proving my point. =D

  18. 318

Re: LVlove – Also, if you were paying attention, I replied to you saying I agreed with you, and I had already stated earlier that besides separation of Church and state, our constitution was built on God. :)

  19. 319

    Re: Kilee Lynn

" THE BOTTOM LINE IS: it is not meant to be like that, for gays to be together."

Well, no one can come to a conclusion whether or not gays are meant to be together, because no one can agree whether gay is a choice or if they're born that way. Homosexuality is present in every culture and every race and has been present in every generation since time began before humans even had a firm grasp on the subject. I myself do no believe gays choose to be that way, and I don't believe they were not meant to be together. Why are they present in society? Maybe it's a natural form of population control or maybe every generation needs a fabulous interior decorator. Who knows?

  20. 320

Re: DanielDax – I just happen to think people like to experiment. I agree that it's been around since the beginning. I just think that through the facts of life a man and a woman are meant to be together, and I just think so many people have tried to prove through science and facts that gays are born that way but if they were I just think they would've proved it by now. There's nothing wrong with loving someone of the same sex, experimenting, whatever, but I just don't think it works out in the end. Exactly, who knows? For now, that's everyone's opinion and maybe none of us are right.

  21. 321

Re: Kilee Lynn – Man but you are just getting bashed from both sides. I actually applaud you for trying to understand ours even though I (maybe narrow mindedly) don't believe that even if I gave you a thousand and one arguments as to why these people should be married you will really listen, but here goes: Marriage is not solely based on faith; it also doles out plenty of tax benefits, death benefits, retirement benefits, and the right to make serious decisions about another person's life when isolated in ICU. Without marriage, those rights are stripped. So please don't say that marriage is only faith related. Marriage grants many benefits. Go take a look at your W4. It says Single, Married, Divorced. Where's the Civil Union box? IT DOESN'T EXIST! Marriage is so entrentched in benefits and basic rights it is unbelievable. It is a sad testiment to our times that basic citizens don't understand ALL that marriage represents. Also, if it were faith based, why can straight people get married outside of the church. Your side can't have it both ways.

  22. 322

    Re: LVlove
I don't think he's going to listen to you, either.

  23. 323

Re: LVlove – You keep harping about marriage being between a man and a woman. Can you please provide me a link or anything to any California law that states this?

Myself and BILLIONS of other people in the world do not follow the word of YOUR good book. I am not interested in being recognized by the church. I am interested in obtaining the same legal rights as anybody else.

  24. 324

Re: Kilee Lynn – How can I be open minded towards someone who is not open minded herself?

  25. 325

Re: ashbert13 – Once again a sound logical explanation. But these people don't have anything to refute it with but Adam and Eve bullshit.

  26. 326

Re: Mojojojo – you are a dumbass, you are only doing what comes natural to you. People do not chose to be gay

  27. 327

    I'm done with this.

Have your opinions, I have mine.

You can call me close minded, ignorant, homophobe…etc….

I don't care what you think, I'm none of those.

    Peace.

  28. 328

Although I disagree with Prop 8, I don't think Melissa Etheridge has any experience reading anything dealing with statutory authority in this country - Hello, Lawrence v. Texas! The state can legislate and base it on morality - that's their legitimate state interest. Whether you agree with it or not is a different story, but it doesn't mean morality is NOT a valid argument for the state or voters to want to uphold. It's the history of this country that shows many crazy state statutes have been upheld based on 'morality.'
Now, is it moral to deny equal protection and equal rights to human beings? No, but that's a different story. I do believe gay rights is the civil rights issue of the new millenium. We're going to look back at these times and be shocked this is how states have dealt with the situation and that Americans across the board tried to deny rights to gays as they did to blacks in the '60s and before.

  29. 329

    Re: Kilee Lynn

I replied to you, but the comments weren't toward you. I was agreeing with ya! Sorry for the confusion. Lol.

  30. 330

Re: LVlove – Oh yes LVlove you got me. I think I am going to cry. Genesis has clearly trumped me. He has given clear and concise evidence why homosexuality and gay marriage is wrong without using religion. Since my brain is so tiny, can you possibly refresh my memory and give me that triumphant answer. Wait, was it gays can not procreate? But aren't their str8 couples who can't pro create either. Maybe that wasn't it. Please give me the non religious answer?

  31. 331

Re: ashbert13 – I don't have a "side," I'm entitled to my own opinions. And regardless of what you think of me without even knowing me, I would totally understand. Just because I don't believe the way you do doesn't make me narrow-minded and you would be narrow-minded for assuming that. I'm actually very open-minded but being against gay marriage is one thing I believe in that's associated with narrow-mindedness so I'm automatically a bad person. If anyone read anything I had written, I have already said it should be called civil union, partnership, whatever. I agree that they should have that box on a W4. Putting all marriage rights aside, I just don't care. In the end, a man and a woman are meant for each other. And just so you know, I was for gay marriage for a very long time before I realized that I didn't think it was right. I think that means I'm open to the idea and that doess NOT make me a close-minded person. I don't have a problem with anyone being gay, I just don't agree with it. You have no reason to insult me as I was trying to agree with you in my reply to you, and I have not insulted anyone, just merely stated my opinion. And apparently that makes me a bad person. The narrow-minded people are the ones who will not hear anyone else out, but all I'm trying to do is have adult conversations with people and even people can't do that anymore.

  32. 332

Re: Kilee Lynn – Kilee, what are these "facts of life" aside from God and religious belief that you keep referring to. Please list these facts of life without any religious support.

  33. 333

Re: mattc101 – You only think I'm not open-minded because I don't agree with you. Once again, being open-minded means respecting everyone's opinion, and occasionally maybe looking into it to educate yourself more. I, for a very long time, was for gay marriage but realized that I don't agree with it. I think that's open to the idea. That makes me close-minded, for being open to ALL ideas? You should be more open-minded and maybe see why people would be against gay marriage. I love my gay friends and respect gays completely but when it comes down to it I just don't agree with all of their decisions, and I guess that makes me a bad person for having a mind of my own.

  34. 334

Re: Syphon – None of them can give you that answer. I have been trying all morning but I get the same nonsensical responses over and over

  35. 335

Re: LVlove – haha sorry, TOTALLY misread and misunderstood it then. Oops. Well I'm glad we agree :)

  36. 336

"sounds sort of like that taxation without representation thing from the history books."
yep, im pretty sure separate but equal didnt work so well either

  37. 337

Many years from now unfortunately our kids kids are going to look back on this with shame and shock just like we look back on the fact that a black and white person could not get married in this country until the 1940's. All of you people out there who supported this ban on gay marriage remember this. There could always come a time when you will be on the other side of discrimination like this. It may not be gay marriage but what happens if society as a whole decides Christianity is no longer thee religion. What if Christianty was shunned and Christians were shunned and rights were taken away from you. When they come for you, what will you do?

  38. 338

Re: Syphon – I've already tried to set religion aside and it seems that no one can do that. I have NEVER mentioned religion being the reason and it's you guys that keep bringing God into this. You don't know whether I am relgious or not. The BOTTOM LINE is that it is a fact of life than man and woman can be together and gays cannot. Where, in that statement, did I mention religion? Please don't try to tell me we're over-populated, gays can love, all of those ideas. I know them all and have considered them all and in the end, in order for life to continue, it continues by man and woman. Sure, experiment with someone of the same sex if you want, I don't care, but it is NOT meant to be like that.

  39. 339

Re: Kilee Lynn – Honestly, I have not called you a bad person, but I cannot be openminded where I think civil and basic rights are being utterly violated. You may be nice, you may be someone I could have over for dinner, but I would not respect you much for taking away someone's rights. That would be like asking me to be openminded to someone who condones slavery. I won't do it. There is SERIOUSLY nothing that you have said so far that makes me for one second think that any merit should be given to limiting marriage to a man and a woman. Marriage is not an exclusive club for people on the VIP straight list. It is a sacred union. I won't be apart in ostracization, and I am sad that someone like you would be party to that. Otherwise, good luck, and I hope you are at peace with your own decisions. Everyone should be, but I, once again will never be openminded to hear views that hurt others.

  40. 340

Re: Kilee Lynn – Ok Kilee Lynn. I am giving you an opportunity to explain with calrity and without religious references, why being gay and gay marriage is wrong. Also, don't use the pro creation thing. There are many straight couples who can not pro create due to infertility and some who choose not to pro create. If you use that logic, then they should be banned from marriage as well. So now that we have all that out of the way, what is your logical reason?

  41. BJT says – reply to this

    341

Mellisa has a great point on half a citizen and no taxes to the government. Its really a sad day when people dont mind there own damn buisness and makes it hard for gay people all across this nation i think they should be able to be happy as much as a straight couple and have the rights as we do which im not gay i think the government and all the insurance companies are be cheap bastards as they are. I also think the christains and the momans should find something better to do with there time instead of spreading hate on people they should be feeding hungry kids her and in other countries and bettering senior citizens lifes with meals on wheels and other goodwill projects i dont think jesus christ are the big God his dad is well pleased with the hate these christains and the government has spreading hate towards the gay people of this nation let them have there freedom what would be so wrong with it what goes on in your life and how you feel about it doesnt make it right to hate gay people i think these guys need fredom do you think they want to be gay but they are born to love the same sex . It doesnt hurt your marriage staight people of america they have it really hard and my gay friends didnt chose this life style it chose them by birth i hope obama does some healing on this matter for the better.

  42. 342

Re: Kilee Lynn – I don't understand. I've "been together" with my partner for 5 years. How are we not together? We don't have complementary genetalia? Is that what you mean? One of us doesn't have a uterus? What are these facts of life (that I've obviously avoided for many, many years now) that is keeping us from being together.

You aren't arguing anything. Again I ask you to list these facts of life. Maybe then I can wrap my head around your argument. Until then I just don't see one.

  43. 343

Re: ashbert13 – Well put ashbert13. Ahhh, a sane rational person. Thank you

  44. 344

Re: ashbert13 – Well I guess we can agree to disagree. However, I don't view it as taking rights away from others. I view that I don't agree with two men or two women being together. I think it's ok to love someone and maybe experiment with someone but when it comes down to it science is based on the cycle of life. I'm sorry you compare my views to slavery but I wish you would see that's not the case. I love gay people, I'm friends with people who are gay. I think if they think they are in love with someone as the same sex, they should have the same "rights" as marriage, but in the end I think that gays are not meant to be together.

  45. 345

Re: Syphon – I'm not trying to take away rights from you, or declare your love unconstitutional, or pretend you're a second-class citizen, or anything of the sort. I think that you can love someone unconditionally regardless of their gender. I think gays should have the same rights as straight people do because we're all human. BUT I have said I don't completely agree with it and I just personally don't think it's right. That doesn't mean I'm going to try to take away your rights, it just means I have a different opinion. Geez, why can't people just see that sometimes everyone has different opinions? Just because it's not yours, that makes me a bad person? I'm telling you I think it's great for you to have rights like that, but I may not agree with that (well I agree with the rights but I think you know what I mean). You are trying to find any loophole in this. There isn't one. It's just my opinion, I'm open to yours, maybe you all can be open to mine and see why maybe people disagree with homosexuality. And yes, it is "facts of life"-not that everyone is going to suddenly be gay, but in order for life to continue-humans, animals, plants, whatever-we cannot be with someone of the same sex. What more proof do you need? It's a scientific fact.

  46. 346

Re: Kilee Lynn – Kilee Lynn, did you vote yes on prop 8?

  47. 347

Re: mattc101 – Ahh, I just don't think I should have to repeat myself, but people obviously don't read. I don't think it's wrong to love. Love anyone, regardless of age, gender, sex, race, religion…I keep on saying it. I think the civil union is ok and they should have their rights. You all do what you want. But to SCIENCE and FACTS and PROOF and just pure commonsense, in order for the cycle of life and the world to continue, gays are not meant to be together. Humans, animals, plants, everything alike reproduce, and not from homosexuality. What more explanation do you need? I don't think I need to repeat commonsense to you again.

    Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah

  49. 349

Re: mattc101 – I don't live in California, I didn't have the choice. I don't think it should matter, anyways. What's fact is fact.

  50. 350

    Hi,
I'm trying to learn more about this issue to see whether I am for or against gay marriage, and I really applaud you guys for providing an intelligent debate on this issue.
Just wanted to share another issue you guys have not brought up yet–the issue of children of gay parents. Is it as 'healthy' to grow up with gay parents than straight ones? Seems like there is just not enough data out there to tell. Dont get me wrong–some of the most amazing people I know are gay and make wonderful parents. Just came across this and wanted to share:)

“Heterosexual parenting is the normative model upon which most comprehensive longitudinal research on childrearing has been based. Data on long-term outcomes for children placed in homosexual households are very limited and the available evidence reveals grave concerns. Those current studies that appear to indicate neutral to favorable results from homosexual parenting have critical flaws such as non-longitudinal design, inadequate sample size, biased sample selection, lack of proper controls, and failure to account for confounding variables. Childrearing studies have consistently indicated that children are more likely to thrive emotionally, mentally, and physically in a home with two heterosexual parents versus a home with a single parent. Therefore, the burden is on the proponents of homosexual parenting to prove that moving further away from the heterosexual parenting model is appropriate and safe for children.

  51. 351

AMEN! She is so right. I want someone to look me IN THE EYE, in person, and tell my girlfriend and I both that we don't deserve the same rights as everyone else. We WILL get our rights.

  52. 352

“Violence among homosexual partners is two to three times more common than among married heterosexual couples. Homosexual partnerships are significantly more prone to dissolution than heterosexual marriages with the average homosexual relationship lasting only two to three years. Homosexual men and women are reported to be inordinately promiscuous involving serial sex partners, even within what are loosely-termed "committed relationships." Individuals who practice a homosexual lifestyle are more likely than heterosexuals to experience mental illness, substance abuse, suicidal tendencies, and shortened life spans. Although some would claim that these dysfunctions are a result of societal pressures in America, the same dysfunctions exist at inordinately high levels among homosexuals in cultures were the practice is more widely accepted.

“Children reared in homosexual households are more likely to experience sexual confusion, practice homosexual behavior, and engage in sexual experimentation. Adolescents and young adults who adopt the homosexual lifestyle, like their adult counterparts, are at increased risk of mental health problems, including major depression, anxiety disorder, conduct disorder, substance dependence, and especially suicidal ideation and suicide attempts.

Re: Kilee Lynn – I did mention the procreation thing in my post. I aologize for misunderstanding tho. So let me clarify just for my own mind. You think homosexuality is wrong because two men or two women can not have children and having children makes the world go around so using the common sense that I so obviously lack, that makes homosexuality just clearly not right. Okey dokey. I think you and need to just part ways. By the way, if you lived in CA, what would you have voted on 8? Given this quote from you "I'm not trying to take away rights from you, or declare your love unconstitutional, or pretend you're a second-class citizen, or anything of the sort", I am guessing you would have voted No on banning gay marriage, right?

“The research literature on childrearing by homosexual parents is limited. The environment in which children are reared is absolutely critical to their development. Given the current body of research, the American College of Pediatricians believes it is inappropriate, potentially hazardous to children, and dangerously irresponsible to change the age-old prohibition on homosexual parenting, whether by adoption, foster care, or by reproductive manipulation. This position is rooted in the best available science.”

Professor Bradley P. Hayton highlighted findings that concern many regarding the effects of a homosexual lifestyle on children. He wrote, “Homosexuals . . . model a poor view of marriage to children. They are taught by example and belief that marital relationships are transitory and mostly sexual in nature. Sexual relationships are primarily for pleasure rather than procreation. And they are taught that monogamy in a marriage is not the norm [and] should be discouraged if one wants a good 'marital' relationship.”

Re: mattc101 – Honestly, I'm not sure what I would've voted, given I was not put in the situation to make a choice. I was not trying to imply that you lack common sense, I was just stating that that's just a basic fact of life. Although you say it in a different manner, yes, that is what I believe, when it comes down to it, why homosexuality is wrong. But it doesn't mean I don't think they can't have rights or love each other.

  57. 357

Re: Neutralonthisissue – Thank you! I'm really glad you brought up the parenting issue, because I totally forgot about it and it's a huge issue. I agree, many of my homosexual friends are great people and would probably make wonderful parents. But I've also read stories about children who have been brought up in households where they had two moms or two dads or whatever. Many said that they felt left out and different from the beginning, and they all said they were treated differently and made fun of at school. I know a girl that's 10 years old who has two Moms, and it has severely impacted her lifestyle. I think it might have to do with the fact that they're kind of agressive, which you also quoted. This girl, 10 years old, is very rude and won't hear anyone else out, and makes fun of anyone doing anything girly. She thinks it's stupid to wear pink and be girly and I know most people don't like hanging out with her. I think that in every household, no matter how loving someone might be as a parent, you need both a father figure and a mother figure. They help so much in your life and both teach you so many different things that you may not understand or accept without them. I'm not sure if this helps you decide on the issue or not, but that's just what I've read about and experienced. :)

Re: mattc101 – How foolish you sound - putting fags in ovens? I don't hat fags.I just care that you think gays should marry-they shouldn't. Its such a silly thing to argue about. It will never happen. Stop comparing it to how blacks were treated. Its not even close to being the same. Gays choose their lifesyle. Its as simple as that. Why one earth would 2 men or 2 women need to marry? It's absurd. Marriage is for straight people you moron. I am well aware that I am on a website ran by a gay man. I have no problem with him being gay. Again, just a problem with his view on marriage. Look at all the things you are saying on this board to people now that's HATE. Get the fuck over yourself. I'm not a hypocrite, just a woman who stands up for what she believes in. Don't feel sorry for my child, he's perfect - because he has a mom and a dad who love him very much and you know what? That is the crux of your problem - you will never ever have that! 2 men or 2 women will never be able to marry and have their own children and that really pisses you off - you just can't stand it. People like you need to take responsibility for their choices-stop blaming everyone else and stop hating and live with your choice. Children NEED a mother and a father - they don't need two homos raising them.

Re: Kilee Lynn – You know Kilee Lynn you are obviously what seems to be a nice caring calm person. Which is why it makes it even more completley frustrating trying to figure out where you are coming from. When you say things like gays are not meant to be together and ask for reasons why they should be, it drives people insane because even though you say it nicely and like we should all just understand it really makes no sense at all. Who are you to make the determination that it just isn't "right" based on your own deductions? Just because gay people can't pro create and they posess the same sexual equiptment, those things do not give reason. Just because a man and woman have genitalia that seems to fit together and create life, it does not therefore exclude anyone else from being together. That makes absolutely no sense at all. I'll give you an analogy. A garage is built for cars. Does that mean you can't slip a bike through the back door of the garage or park a boat in there or what if someone wanted to keep an animal in their garage. Yes it is a bit unorthodox and maybe confusing to you but it works fine for them and it is not hurting you or the animal.

  61. 361

Re: Sgirl – Listen up you stupid hate filled bitch. Not that you need to know this but I am married to an amazing woman and have 2 incredible children. I am not hate filled at all (well except towards you and intolerant assholes like you). I want everyone to be treated equally. I am not gay but I am so god damn sick and tired of people like imposing your bullshit on others, whether it be gays, other religious groups, blacks, latinos, whatever the hell group it is that you think is "wrong". Gay marriage will happen you fucking retartded cunt. Better get used to it now. God I hope one of your children isn't gay. I would hate to have to edure your wrath. They will grow up with fear and loathing of themselves because of your prejudice fat ass. Blacks were born black and gays were born gay. Prejudice is prejudice. Get educated you dumb witch. Why don't you and Sarah Palin go live on an island somewhere. You both certainly are not what America is all about.

  64. 364

Re: mattc101 – Well thank you. I didn't mean to sound mean earlier and I'm sorry I came off as that way. I think it's hard to express the way you feel about something through writing. Anyways, I understand what you're saying. For me, it just still comes down to yes, they're not doing anything to hurt me, but like I said in the end I just don't agree with it. In no way would I think of them any less and I respect them completely, it's just the way I believe :)

  65. 365

Re: Sgirl – Hmm. Quote from you "I don't hate fags." What an oxymoron right there. As if that isn't enough. Here is another quote from you. "Children NEED a mother and a father - they don't need two homos raising them." Now tell me you don't hate gay people. Please bitch, you have no credibility hear on a website run by a gay man. Get the hell out of here!

  66. 366

Re: MOMMIE DEAREST – Appropriate name for you.

  67. 367

The ignorance and hatred I see here is repulsive. No I do not believe anyone who is gay chooses to be ostracized and denied the same rights and privileges. I have met plenty of gay people who have said they did not choose to be this way. What two consenting adults do in their bedroom is not anyone's business. I hate hearing "well if gays can marry, pedophiles should be allowed to marry children, or people should be allowed to marry pets" HOW DOES THAT MAKE ANY SENSE?? Hurting children and abusing animals is sick and I wonder where people get this idea from.. What are they repressing to make such an off-the-wall comparison? (Saw it on the cnn.com comment page about this issue)

Of course she will still pay her taxes, she is just trying to make a point that she is being denied her right. Lets leave gay people alone, if you arent mature enough to explain to your children that not everyone is the same then thats your personal problem. Gay relationships have gone on since the world began, and many different species exhibit homosexual behavior. Homosexuals are not going to come into your bedroom and have sex in front of your family. Lets focus on our own lives and being better people rather than telling consenting adults how to live. That would be MUCH more Christian-like.

  68. 368

Re: Sgirl – I know you probably won't answer this but I'll ask anyways. I just really want a logical explanation. This country voted and said that a black person and a white person could not marry. That law was implemented long ago. It obvioulsy is not the case anymore but since it was the will of the people and voted on unanimously, why is it not in effect today? Based on your logic, shouldn't it be? The people spoke, right? Uhh maybe because it wasn't right you dumb ass. Come on give me a nasty hillbilly homophobic answer

  69. 369

Re: Ryuuzaki – Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They won't hear you tho but thank you

  70. 370

GET OVER IT. if you need the title of "married" to feel complete you are completely fucked. Nobody can physically stop you from being together so instead of complaining about things you cant change just shut your mouth. There are way more important things in the world to focus on.

  71. 371

i actually would hope she doesnt pay taxes then her dumb ass can get thrown in jail and we wouldnt have to listen to her whine and complain. Thats like me saying "john mccain wasnt elected president so instead of dealing with obama I will not pay taxes" EVERYONE HAS THEIR PROBLEMS. soooo stfu

STOP LETTING MEXICANS INTO THIS COUNTRY,AND GAYS DONT VOTE FOR ANYTHING THAT BENEFITS BLACKS,NO GANG PREVENTION,NOTHING

  76. 376

Re: knowitall – i agrre with u.i think gays in CA should be racists from now on.wtf?blacks(of course not all) are hateful.uneducated, bigots, conservatives ignorants and im disapointed with the black community.70% of blacks voted YES!!!!!THEY MADE THE DIFFERENCE TO TOOK AWAY GAYS RIGHTS.!!!!and i think gays should start a civil war.go to the streets.put fire on cars,if you guys are considered a second citzen act like a second citzen.go to churches and fck each other in front of those fckin conservatives.and from now on vote against everything that are related to the black comunity.

  77. 377

Re: mattc101 – "My definition of marriage" comes from the bible and it is the real definition. Maybe you should do some research then you would know that marriage comes from Christianity. You thinnk it is just a legal binding commitment between two people. It is, but if you are homosexual and committed to your partner, than go out and get a CIVAL UNION or make up something else which is a legally binding. Just DONT CALL IT MARRIAGE! You are taking what God created and trying to change it to only benefit homosexuals.

  78. 378

Re: knowitall – i agree with you.Blacks are bigots!!!!!!!!im not a racist i voted for obama but the black comunity (70%)voted yes.so fck then.

    i agree with knowwitall!!!balcks are bigots!!!!!!!!black men are bigots.so fck then .

  81. 381

Not a bad idea. There are plenty of DINK households (double income no kids) who could just as easily make their official residence Nevada, where there is no state tax, and not alot of legislating morality…though prostitutes do need to be licensed and get a clean bill of health.

  82. 382

…or if you want to pay tax AND be a full citizen, come on out to Massachusetts! P-town is rockin' and you can marry whomever you want.

(ps. we could use the revenue. )

  83. 383

Re: Genesis – This is one of the best posts I've read on this subject.
People, once again - gays have the EXACT SAME RIGHTS as STRAIGHT people when it comes to marriage; they have the RIGHT to marry someone OF THE OPPOSITE SEX, who is NOT THEIR CLOSELY RELATED BLOOD RELATIVE, WHO IS OF LEGAL AGE AND WHO IS NOT ALREADY MARRIED. I have that right, they have that right. Similarly, I do not have the right to marry someone of the same sex. Neither do gays. SAME RIGHTS.

The problem is that Gays don't want to marry someone of the opposite sex because they are attracted to people of their same gender. So the problem is not a violation of RIGHTS, the problem is that of gays attempting to change a historically heterosexual institution based on their non-hetero preference. It's ridiculous. Find your own club, like Genesis said.

  84. 384

    (cont'd)
We can't change the basic definition of marriage. If we change the definition of marriage on the BASIS OF SEXUAL PREFERENCE, then we are opening the door for any sexual preference to also be able to come along and say they have the right to marry as well. As in, people who want to marry their pets or underage children.

MARRIAGE IS FOR 1 MAN and 1 WOMAN, by DEFINITION. GAYS NEED TO FIND ANOTHER DEFINITION THAT IS UNIQUE TO THEM AND THEIR SITUATION. THEY SHOULD BE HONORED TO CREATE THEIR OWN UNIQUE WORD AND SET OF LAWS FOR THEIR RELATIONSHIPS, INSTEAD OF RE-USING A WORD AND AN ANTIQUATED SET OF LAWS THAT WAS AND ALWAYS HAS BEEN INTENDED FOR HETEROSEXUAL RELATIONSHIPS.

  85. 385

I keep reading about the Federal tax benefit for marriage. You realize California voting down Prop 8 would have no effect on FEDERAL laws, right?
As a side note, my fiance and I have a "domestic partnership" right now so that she can be on my medical insurance before we're married. I pay for her copays post tax and it cost me a whopping 80 bucks a month extra for this. We made a choice to be together and all choices have a cost. This one cost 80 bucks. Should I get a petition going demanding a new W-2 box? No. Clearly the rest of the country doesn't agree with that and not in a 1700s "slaves are ok" way-in a way that is still respectful and open to the gay lifestyle. I think there would be more sympathy if this issue wasn't forced down our throats. I'm happy that you can be proud of your life, but much like you probably don't want to know about my pride in, oh hell, being straight, I don't want your life shoved in my face. As much as I respect your right to love whomever you want, you should respect my belief that marriage is between a man and a woman. As other posters have said, many "open minds" seem slammed shut.

Re: miz_hilton – You know what Miz Hilton, I don't care where the hell marriage came from. I care about what it means now and if you were even slightly educated you would know that marriage as we know it today is also a legal status which comes with rights(tax benefits, medical rights, estate rights) that you can not get with a civil union. Do your homework hater. And you suggest go makeup something. Brilliant solution. Yah they should just go make up something and that will be recognized and give them rights automatically. God your stupid. Why should they not have exactly the same options you have as Americans, as human beings! I have to ask you this though. I really need to know the answer to this question. How is two gay people getting married possibly affecting your life? How is this union between two people in love possibly going to hurt you? Again this all boils down to the fact that you are a christian zombie who thinks being gay is wrong/bad. You know if Jesus were here today I highly doubt he would be spewing this kind of hate. From what I gather, he was peaceful loving kind of guy. Stop spreading hate and discrimination in his name. It is so tacky to say the least.

  89. 389

Re: stacestace – Stace, your post really takes the cake in terms of offensiveness. Comparing gay marriage to marrying pets and children. What is wrong with you people. I fee like I am living in Hitlers germany circa 1940. Can you sound any more ignorant? I will say this once again even though no one will acknowledge it because it is the truth. Marriage today is a government recognized contract which includes many rights. It is a legal status that is recognized across cultures, countries and religions. Only a few states have civil unions and they do not carry all the rights and status that marriage does. Now why are gay people not entitled to hold the same status that you are? Oh yah cause your GOD or your Jesus says it is wrong. Hmm. So we all have to follow what your interpretation of your religion says. Wow that seems really fair Stace.

  90. 390

Wake up haters! It is 2008 and this country is finally thankfully changing. You are becoming outnumbered and very rapidly. Obama is a huge step in moving this along. Unfortunately this ban squeaked through this time but NOT next time. More young people will be able to vote and that will be it or the supreme court will rule it unconstituitonal again. Fairness will prevail. If you don't like it, leave America because you are not what America is about. America is about freedom and equality for everyone. Christians, marriage is NOT your little club and if it was then why are you lettting everyone in your club get divorced. Please someone answer me why you don't go for a ban divorce measure on the ballot if it is so sacred to you. Please Please someone answer that. If you hold marriage up on this great pedestal between a man and a woman why do heteros do such an awful job of protecting it? Times change but you don't want to change with it. You want to live in a bubble. Not going to happen. Instead of being open loving peaceful human beings, you are going to be pissy and bitter cause somone wants to share your ever precious word that according to you was created by GOD. Do you really think a loving GOD would approve of your behavior?

  91. 391

SHE'S ON THE RIGHT TRACK! THERE WOULD BE NO HOLLYWOOD OR SAN FRANCISCO ART CULTURE HIPSTERS WITHOUT ALL THE WEALTHY GAY AND LIBERAL RESIDENTS OF CALIFORNIA.

SIMPLE ANSWER IS: EVERYBODY MOVE! SELL YOUR 8 MILLION DOLLAR HOUSE. DON'T GIVE YOUR INCOME OR PROPERTY TAX TO CALIFORNIA. LET IT FALL INTO THE SEA.

  92. 392

Oh you stupid selfish bitch!! PPl are starving to death in the Us and you are acting like a spoiled brat bitch. God, you all make me sick….no I shouldn't say that, but you make me sick and do does Ellen. You people throw money away like like you have nothing to do but use it to make ppl mad. Don't pay them you bitch and I hope u rot in jail. And I hope they send u to jail with all men. Are U excited Melissa???

  93. 393

Re: this*is*a*fake*name*yo – Once again you and your girlfreind have the option of getting married and enjoying the benefits and rights that come along with that. It is a legal union recognized by the government. Why aren't gays entitled to those same benefits/rights just like you? And dont say anything about civil unions or domestic partnership because they do not carry all of the same rights that marriage does. Nad if they are granted those rights, how does that exactly hurt you and your girlfreind???

  94. 394

Re: ccrys98mom – She is trying to make a point you idiots. She isn't not going to pay her taxes. She isn't trying to find a loophole not to pay taxes, LOL.

  95. 395

I'm sick of paying taxes myself! It's clearly a waste of money. I didn't last year. I funneled it through The Church of Scientology and off-shore accounts. That's why I have botox and wear designer clothes and my neighbors shop at JC PENNEY and Wal-Mart.

Your views are that of a sad housewife whose husband is fucking one of his buddies, cause he is so unattracted to his bigot, fat ass wife. I hope all your children commit suicide for how they were raised.

  99. 399

Re: Kilee Lynn – I was just curious, and this is for everyone of the opionin that gays shouldn't "marry," If the word marriage was taken of it the equation would you still have a problem with it? I have seen the reasons put forth and it seems like the battle ground is over the word marriage, it doesn't seem like many of you want people of the same sex in a relationship to be denied the civil benifits of the insitution marriage. So if we were strictly talking about giving the rights of "marriage" to those in a relationship with someone of the same sex would you oppose?
ps I would be careful with statements about the bible as the word of god, you should probable disclaim that as word of god written by men (in other language by the way) edited though out the centuries by more men (popes) translated and now what we call the bible. If you are someone who has read an unedited bible in the original language, and yes translation changes the messages, then please feel free to call it direct word of god, until then please do not.

Were you BORN straight? Could you, If you WANTED, choose to "go gay?" If you can't even fathom the thought, it makes you sick to think about, etc, then think about how gays who are told to go straight feel. And if you say you CAN, I challenge you to TRY it. I'm betting you wont get far.
