Oregon Puts California To Shame

This Election Season marks the beginnings of a new era in this country.
We elected an African-American president.
And in the tiny city of Silverton, Oregon, voters pulled off what California could not: looked past differences to see the person underneath and treat him without discrimination.
Stu Rasmussen has become one of the first openly transgender mayors in the United States.
Rasmussen has served 2 terms as Mayor of Silverton, but it was only this time around that he campaigned in a skirt and heels.
Rasmussen identifies as a heterosexual male, and his girlfriend is happy for his landslide win. He has always been transgender, but "came out" only a couple of years ago. He jokingly says that his bosom was the result of a mid-life crisis, "Some guys' mid-life crisis is motorcycles or sports cars or climbing mountains or trophy wives or whatever. I always wanted cleavage, so I went out and acquired some."
Stu admits that was worried how his run for Mayor would go, but was glad to see that people were unfazed. "We get down to discussing whatever the issue is - city business or business or whatever - and they figure out this guy's different, but he knows what he's talking about."
Voter Gail Frassenei says, "He wants to maintain the integrity of Silverton. I think it's amazing a small town like this can be so open-minded, to elect someone that's made a life change."
Becoming a little bit emotional, Rasmussen says, "I'm prejudiced, but I think this is just about the coolest town on Earth."
We wish we could say similarly for California.
By the way, yes, we used the term "transgender" correctly.

Now that the transformation is taking it's course, this person is likely to be fully healthy and fully capable of running matters of state. If she was still a man, I would agree with you. In that case, she would constantly feel pressured and something would not feel right. Her mind would not be on the job and then citizens may suffer due to it.
Sexual orientation or gender does not make someone better for any job. It should never come into play. Unfortunately, most women still make less than men and there are strong stereotypes in the work field. A man as a nurse will be discriminated against (or feel the reverse effect-move up very fast because he is a man) and a woman mechanic will also be discriminated against.
Vote for the better man/woman for the job and you did all that you could! Sexuality, gender, race (and many other factors) do not need to be considered.

During the last three decades, psychiatry has moved away from reliance on theories of causation–theories which, typically, cannot be verified–and instead sought direct, empirically provable evidence; not of the pathological origins of a condition, but of its disabling effect in the present. Without such evidence for observable distress and disability, a condition is generally not considered to be a mental disorder.
If you were going with the definition of 30+ years ago, you would be right. It's no longer the case. Also, gender dysphoria will most likely not be in the next version of the DSM.
So then move there. Until January 20, 2009, this is still a free country.

There is also a diagnosis of body dysphoria, but that is where the person just feels uncomfortable at being the gender they were born as, because they have a mis-wiring in the brain that causes confusion. That is true. Gender dysphoria is the medical term describing a disorder in persons whose self-image of their "emotional" gender is different from their physiological gender. If you don't think that relates to the processing of information in the brain, then you need to go back to high school.

I dont see how that makes sense. He still identifies as a male (his gender) so how can he be trans-gender (trans meaning change/switch) - he didnt switch his gender. Adding breasts does not change one's gender - gender is how you identify based on socially constructed molds….he straight up says he still identifies as a straight male. Regardless of what he looks like, if he is still conforming to standard male gender roles, but just in a dress and with boobs, thus he did not change his gender. Now, if he were to be dressing like a woman and got boobs as well as started to adopt female gender roles I would then consider him trans-gender. I think we'd have to know a little bit more about this story to totally figure it out…the article is vague.
