Sounds like she's either sick, getting over being sick, exhausted … or just flew in (I can't sing on the same day I fly).
Her performance WASN'T ACTUALLY LIVE!!!
They had pre-recorded it about 3 hours before it was aired - I know one of the other finalists and they had updated their status to say they'd just performed with Mariah about 3hrs before the show!!
And she was like a robot throughout the whole programme - she wouldn't let any of the finalists kiss her face during the mentoring, and she wouldn't / couldn't move her head at all!
I think Mariah has been replaced by a big bosomed robot with fat hamster cheeks.

And yes - she is still a hundred times a better singer live than Madonna and Britney!!!!!!!!!
It was not that bad!
I've been a singer for 15 years, and the lady's clearly not well, and trying to pull off the song with as little cracking as possible. She copped out on all the head voice stuff in the 1st verse because when your voice is strained, you MAY be able to get those notes belting, but no way they'll come out nicely when you're being soft and controlled. Then, she pushed her way through the bridge into the big end chorus (she looked so pained, I could feel it in my vocal cords, poor thing!) and they bought in support for the end of the song, cause it would've had no climax otherwise. Result? SHe sounded like a bad karaoke version of herself. But all singers have had those days!
If you guys go to youtube and search for my all live performance of mariah carey, she did the exact same thing. I guess she's loosing her voice or something. She's not the same as before anymore.

anyone notice on the mariah X Factor ntro that her total record sales had increased since the release of E=MC2? The offical press release during the E=MC2 promo was 160 million, in fact she infamously hung up the phone on BBC radio 1 when they got the figure wrong. Last night it said 200 million, has she sold 40 mil since April? I think not, E=MC2 has sold shite across the globe, just under 2 mil at the moment. Liar liar pants on fire

this wasn't bad. It was a rendition, which is why you people think it sounds bad. Just different. Not as impressive as the original as she didn't hit as many keys and high notes. Still Mariah's current level of singing still way above most.

Honestly, compared to some of the other performances Mariah has given within the past year or so, this performance was very well executed!! Usually she fails to even sing live, so the fact that she did was a plus. She hit many of the high notes in the song and she seemed to be more focused on the music or singing than say the direction the wind blows her hair or the way her body appears on camera, so I feel this was "a step back" to where she once was before all the excess came into her performances!

I thought she sounded pretty good. I have a little more respect for her now then I did before when she lip synched EVERYTHING you saw on television. And she actually looks nice and appropriate–a far cry from how she normally looks. My outlook on her has actually gone up a bit after this clip…

leaver her alone, she has been singing for 20 years and has always sounded great. u cant expect her voice to sound the same as it did 20 yrs ago. the voice is a delicate instrument and it sounds damn good still. give credit when its due. u cant fault her for her amazing talent cuz your jealous.

she looked like she was on some really heavy anti depressants or something….all the furniture was placed so that she could hang on to it….she seemed kind of glazed over and she was so wooden it was weird to watch.

Not bad but not as great as she has been. My sister & I couldn't believe that Laura & Ruth were in the bottom 2; they are 2 of the best singers. Owen (can't remember how he spells it) & that older guy should have been in the bottom 2.

And maybe if she sounded a little off on this song she's still better then most of the singers out there. All the other ones are so lucky they dance and stuff on stage because if they didn't we'd see through their bad singing. Mariah proves and has proven with her record sales that she doesn't even need to dance to make her songs sell

wow, i have heard mariah sing this song live a million times and she knocked it out of the park each time, i seriously think she was sick or something because she didnt break into her high notes or anything…nice that she played it safe, she could of pulled a whitney houston and than we all would have been put out of our misery!
I LOVE Mariah and would defend her to the end and no this was not her best performance. BUT she sings better on a bad day that about 99% of the people on this planet, including so many of the Idol wannabes that can't sing any better than Roseanne!
I'm going to defend Maria-mylastclassiccdwasrainbow-carey and say that she definitely hurt her voice and knew she only had a couple of belts left and she totally saved them for the end- which was stellar and totes worth it : )
I don't know WTF your talking about. Dude seriously I think she did great. Yeah she changed up the song a bit. Sing the same song for over a decade and you might be inclined to change it too. But she was good. Really. She hasn't lost shit!! It's a challenging song for anyone to sing. I don't believe she bombed by any stretch.

She's gotten used to singing ghetto-shit music like "Touch My Body" which doesn't take any singing ability. Her voice isn't used to having to sing songs that actually require talent anymore.
She sounded like she had a cold. I've seen her do "Hero" live before and she uses a similar arrangement to this one. The fact she isn't going into her upper register tells me she was sick. Cut her some slack. At least she still showed up, unlike other divas like Whitney who just cancel at the last second.
shoot. She lowered a lot of the notes, to be sure that she wouldnt crack. But she still sounded pretty good, considering her being horse. But I love Mariah Carey, she's got a kick-but voice anyway
i never really liked her voice that much, like when she talks she sounds so manly, and then when she sings, she goes up and down so much with the notes and does that whispering pitchy thing, i can't stand that, i wish she would do more stuff like from her early career before implants and divaness took over her.
