You people who keep saying "Get over it" simply do not get it. You need to read up on your US History and you need to read the Constitution. The US Constitution exists to protect minorities from potential bigotry of the majority. Prop 8 should be overturned because it violates the US Constitution, and those whose rights have been harmed because of it should not just "shut up" about it. This is for the same reason that segregation laws were overturned, that anti-miscegenation laws were overturned, etc. etc.

I find it ironic that not along in this country black's were thought of as cursed by Christians,Catholics and Mormons. In fact, it was only 1978 that the Mormons gave up their fight and hatred of black's. Mormons were the majority backer of Prop 8.
Historically, some Christians have interpreted the Biblical passages so that the "mark" is thought to be part of the "curse". In 18th century America and Europe, it was commonly assumed that Cain's "mark" was black skin, and that Cain's descendants were black and still under Cain's curse. Accepting the theory that God had cursed black people, some have used the curse as a Biblical justification for racism. These racial and ethnic interpretations of the curse and the mark have been largely abandoned even by the most conservative theologians since the mid-20th century, although the theory still has some following among white supremacists and an older generation of whites, as well as a very small minority of Christian churches.
I wrote a blog on myspace about Prop 8 and I'm going to try to share it here:I am very bothered by the outcome of Proposition 8. If you voted Yes on Proposition 8, I think you are ignorant, hateful, and hypocritical. And to learn that the majority of people of color (69% of Blacks; 53% of Latinos) voted favoring Proposition 8 is saddening. To discriminate based on ethnicity, race, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, or ability is wrong! Discrimination is discrimination! We, as a people, must fight against the notion of second class citizens. Most hate mongers in denial who voted Yes on 8, have used the bible in defense of their vote. Maybe I am simply confused. In my opinion, Prop 8 did not ask whether or not you and your religion believe in homosexuality, you have a right not to. I believe Prop 8 asked whether all law abiding tax paying citizens should be treated equally under the law. And the answer to that must always be a resounding YES!! Again, you have a right to your religious beliefs. I get it; the bible says adultery, lying, stealing, jealousy, homosexuality are wrong. Fine, then don’t practice homosexuality and don’t make friends with homosexuals, but YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE THE RIGHT to amend the law so it would treat law abiding tax paying citizens differently. “An unjust law is itself a species of violence. There are twelve mentions of homosexuality in the Bible: two refer to rape (Genesis 19:5, Judges 19:22); five refer to cult prostitution (Deuteronomy 23:17-18, 1 Kings 14:23-24, 15:12-13, 22:46, 2 Kings 23:6-8); one refers to prostitution and pederasty (1 Corinthians 6:9-10) and four are nonspecific (Leviticus 18:21-22, Leviticus 20:13, Romans 1:26-27, 1 Timothy 1:8-10). An interesting question: Are consensual homosexual acts prohibited by the Bible, or were the Bible passages intended to apply only to homosexual acts of rape, prostitution, pederasty and idolatry? Are homosexual acts especially serious sins, as suggested by Leviticus 20:13?
Or are they relatively minor sins because they were not mentioned in the Ten Commandments or by Jesus, and there are only 12 other mentions in the Bible? In comparison, the sin of hatred is mentioned 21 times, lying and false testimony 30, greed, avarice and covetousness 40, theft 42, adultery 52, murder 57, self-righteousness 79, and idolatry 169 times. Is a consensual homosexual relationship any more abominable to God than the worldliness and other sins that we are all guilty of? According to Yes on 8 Ignorant Hate Mongers, Proposition 8b should pass as well: If one commits adultery, she or he shall not be allowed to ever remarry. This prohibition will preserve the sanctity of marriage. The bible speaks against adultery 52 times and only speaks against homosexuality 12 times. Will the Mormon church and all other hate mongers raise close to 40 million dollars again to support prop 8b? Will they waste valuable resources to ensure that the sanctity of marriage is protected?
Teachers do not and would have never directly taught gay marriage. We don’t even teach marriage… those were lies, lies, lies. The state Education Code does not allow schools to teach comprehensive sex education — which includes instruction about marriage — to children whose parents object. Although it is not a CA standard, teachers, or at least the great ones, teach tolerance and respect. I am very proud of every virtue we instill in our students. Please let us not have another young life brutally taken because of societal apathy, ignorance, hatred and intolerance. Wasn’t it just last year that a gay teen was beaten to death by a classmate? Gay teens are four times more likely to attempt suicide than straight teens. Every life is valuable and must be respected and protected.
Most of the incidents that were used to push Yes on 8 were decontextualized for the masses. Here is what the LA Times had to say about the tax exemption issue. “The court ruled against the church not because gay rights trump religious rights but because public land has to be open to everyone or it's not public. The ruling does not affect churches' religious tax exemptions or their freedom to marry whom they please on their private property, just as Catholic priests do not have to perform marriages for divorced people and Orthodox synagogues can refuse to provide space for the weddings of interfaith couples. And Proposition 8 has no bearing on the issue; note that the New Jersey case wasn't about a wedding ceremony.”

I'm so tired of all this; California has voted (again), the results have been tallied (again) and the result is the same (again).
I voted Yes on 8, but now that I'm looking back I'm thinking if it had not passed this might be beneficial to other 'minority groups'. The GLBT community claims that you 'cannot' choose to be gay, you are born that way. Well, I was born to love to smoke pot; it is not a 'choice', my doctor has prescribed it to me and I cannot live without it. I know that there are other people out with my same condition, so I'm going to say we are a 'minority group'. If this gets overturned, then I will also have to fight for my 'right' to smoke wherever I'd like. I hope everyone reading this understands and will support our 'minority group' in getting this accomplished.

No civil rights were lost with Proposition 8. Domestic Partnership still protects as if a spouse while maintaining the cultural terminology in place for hundreds of years. Polygamists were just as impacted by prop 8.

To better put this into perspective, we need to look at some simple facts. Marriage has been highly regarded as an institution of religious matters and belief, but occurred long before religion as a social matter. For political, economic, social hierarchy etc. In, I believe Europe, the church took matters into their own hands and stated all marriages must be infront of a witness/priest.
There were a specific number of witnesses attached to that. This was to prevent secret marriages, and to keep track of people. Religion largely ruled the political factors in those days. So over 400 years ago you can see marriage became an institution of religion. Currently, our marriage in the US can be done in one of many many ways, but the "traditional" way is to be married by a priest in a church. Based on these small facts, I believe that it is the CHURCHES decision on who to marry (heterosexual, or homosexual) and not the states. The state/federal government have an obligation to make sure all people are equal as created by the Constitution.
In this, it appears, that the separation of church and state have crossed lines, and this is a very grey area. On another note, when Civil Unions are granted, then plan on having all of us homosexuals calling it marriage. We grew up, and many of us grew up, with being told when two people "love" eachother they get married. So to many of us non-denominational/atheist etc etc. fall in love, we regard marriage as the next step. Call it what you will.

Re: oocbaby – THe idea is not to steal the word marriage, but to have the government protect us and our families and possessions as they do that of a married man and woman. Families are being torn apart because there are no laws to protect. It's not about stealing the word or the institution of marriage, but being recognized as two people committed to spend life together and have that which they built protected.

If people "VOTED" to no longer allow races to mix in schools, would that be something everyone should "Live with" because it was democratically decided?
Some things like basic rights for equality shouldn't be determined by a democratic vote, otherwise everyone who is a minority will have their rights taken away. People who don't see this are idiots who haven't been taught critical thinking skills.
Then again, what more should be expected, since it's been democratically decided not to put money into school systems …

In light of so many bigoted people on here, I thought you had some REAL points…it saddens me that the majority of "Christians" spend so much of their time pushing people away from Jesus' message of LOVE. ok, I am all for equal rights, but all the protesting is really kacking up traffic in this town. Which may sound petty but you start adding an hour + on to peoples already too long commute they start to get unsympathetic. Take it to the superme court get it over turned and stop with the protesting marches

You are misguided youth and I will try to be as delicate and clear as possible: You couldn't be further from the divine truth. You are using hate and judgment to distance people away from their Creator. You aren't possibly big enough to know the essence of God, so don't pretend to know what God did (or did not) create. Everyone-even the lowliest of "sinners," has a spark of divine light inside (even if they choose to hide from it).
Spend time spreading the love Jesus showed for everyone. You will make a bright contribution to the world that's already dark enough!
