ummm, actually, "black" is hardly offensive. "white" people are not technically white, but i don't know any white people that insist they be called "caucasian" or "ango-saxon" or anything more "proper." The term "African-American" is not even something that all black people identify with. I know many people whose families come form Haiti and other islands in th Caribbean. Maybe their roots eventually trace back to Africa, but they don't identify with the term "African-American" because they consider themselves "Caribbean-Americans."
There's NOTHING wrong with using the terms "black" and "white." yes, they are colloquial but HARDLY offensive.
I'm so sick and tired of having to be politically correct. Colored used to be fine, now it isn't. Negro used to be fine, now it isn't. Black used to be fine, now it isn't. Now it's African-American. Oh barf! If that's the case, I want to be called English, Irish, Scottish, American Indian, German-American. Ok?

I'm FAR from being a racist, my first husband was Brazilian half black and would refer to himself as mulatto and black people negro. Since both terms derive from the Latin language they were legitimately used by back and white people throughout the entire world for centuries without anyone becoming offended until the 20th century…don't know what went wrong, and how a single word that was never considered a slur became one. How much more complicated can people make life? For simply descriptive purposes wouldn't black (Negroid races), white (Caucasian races) , Asian (mid eastern races), oriental (of the orient or eastern races), Indian (American Indian races) make much more sense??? Calling all black people in N.America African American is so bizarre, since it's wrong! There are just as many black people in the America's from Haiti, South/Central America, and technically the entire world now that immigrated to N.America that lumping all with dark skin 'African' is a misnomer and by some (as my ex-husband was) offensive.
