i'm from europe. in south africa "colored people" is the official expression for this ethnic group. some people from the us just should get over it that "colored" would be an offense. it's downright ridiculous that it's a big, big problem if you describe someone as white, black or colored. i don't understand why it's a big deal to callsomeone "colored" who IS "colored".

I have lived in the deep south my entire life and never have I or anyone I know used the word "colored" when speaking of a black person. Not everybody in the south is racist and in fact the south has more black people then most parts of the country so we are more used to being in close contact with each other.

Down South, we work together, shop together at Wal-Mart, eat in the same restaurants, my church is about a third, third , third.

Not true. I know nothing about this guide you received, but anyone with any knowledge could tell you the proper term is "person of color" or "people of color,". "Colored" has been considered an improper term for a long time now. She could have said "Black President," "African-American President," or "President of Color" and they all would have been correct terms. Though Lindsay Lohan is not the smartest individual, I do not think she meant 'colored' in the pre-Civil Rights Movement, ignorant, politically incorrect sense. She may very well have meant to say 'person of color', referring to Obama not as a 'colored' man but as a 'person of color', a term encompassing all non-white individuals. The term is absolutely politically correct , and she may have meant to use that term and simply misspoke.

i can't say much about S.A. but i have been there on vacation several times. meanwhile white people feel discriminated. i don't know if it's still like this but 2 or 3 years ago there was a law that jobs have to be filled in proportion to the ethnic group's share of the population. therefore qualified white people became unemployed. some of them have to leave the country.

I don't get it. What is so wrong w/ calling a person of color "colored" vs. "black"? Obviously given the question, I'm white. However, over the years I've gathered many friends who are not. Some of my friends take insult to being called "black", because they feel they are truly more brown in nature, not black.
Ever since that group pow-wow many years ago, I've always been sensitive to the fact that not every person is black, just as not every person is brown. So if there is a need to discuss race, which I tend to leave out of the equation all together as I do not feel it necessary to point out someones race, I refer to them as "someone of color". I certainly do not mean it in any way shape or form as racist, and I certainly am NOT racist. I see people as people, PERIOD!
So… please educate me, as I thought by not limiting every person of darker skin than I as "black" was out of respect, not out of hate.
