Tomorrow, Saturday, November 15th, all over America and Canada, concerned citizens will be peacefully demonstrating the passing of Prop H8te in California - and similar discriminatory measures in Florida, Arizona and Arkansas.
This is an issue that affects us in EVERY state!
It's about the rights, privileges and protections that come with civil marriage that are currently being denied to gay and lesbian couples. It's about discrimination. And we can't stand for it!
Perez will be joining protestors at the Los Angeles rally.

I just don't get it. Why the big hooplah? We passed this law in Canada a few years ago, and have had at least 2 elections since then. No one brings it up yet we have a very conserative leader. He might not personally agree with it but it is now part of our society. So let people get married - all people - and one day you will all look back and wonder what the big fuss was about. Hey Perez, if things don't work out down there tell everyone to come get married up here!

Gays shouldn't care about a piece of paper or a church ceremony or the religious label "marriage". The reason they want marriage is because our goverment recognizes marriage and marriage automatically comes with many rights (tax credits/issues, estate issues, etc..) that you do not get with a civil union. With a civil union which by the way is only recognized in 4 states, you can be with someone for 40 years and still not automatically be entitled to their assets if they die. Their long lost aunt lucy from Debuke could take it all. Is that fair????????

Re: mattc101 – I can tell you with full certainty that had the word "marriage" not been used or if civil unions were expanded to include everything that came along with marriage (health, insurance, estate rights, tax breaks, etc.), it would have won in a landslide. I think the idea that "marriage" was being redefined was what a majority of those voting "Yes" found most distasteful. Had some other word been used, I guarantee that there wouldn't nearly have been this much of a fuss.

I mean by your logic since I am an athiest and do not believe in GOD, then I shouldn't be allowed to marry either since it is a religious institution, right? Marriage may have began as a religious concept but it has been adpoted by the US government and recognized domestically and internationally. It is a very strong legal binding contract and do you really think civil unions are going to equal that ever? Very doubtful. They are extremely limited and only 4 states recognize them now. So I can't answer that question very well since that ooption is so far from ever becoming a reality.
