South Carolina Catholic Priest Says No Communion Wafers For Unrepentant Obama Voters

South Carolina Catholic priest Jay Scott Newman has told his parishioners in a letter that if they voted 'Barack Hussein Obama' and don't ask for forgiveness for doing so before taking the Body and Blood of Christ, their souls will be at risk!
His reason?
Says the priest, "Our nation has chosen for its chief executive the most radical pro-abortion politician ever to serve in the United States Senate or to run for president. Voting for a pro-abortion politician when a plausible pro-life alternative exists constitutes material cooperation with intrinsic evil, and those Catholics who do so place themselves outside of the full communion of Christ's Church and under the judgment of divine law. Persons in this condition should not receive Holy Communion until and unless they are reconciled to God in the Sacrament of Penance, lest they eat and drink their own condemnation."

OH so sad. This is why I am a lapsed Catholic. This judgemental attitude and and outdated thinking is causing Catholics to leave the church left and right. No wonder they are closing Catholic churches all over the country. It is time to put these outdated "rules" behind us. Let the priests marry and let women be allowed to be priests. Then and only then will you see change in this religion. This man is just one more in a line of archaic thinkers. It is time to bring the Catholic church out of the dark ages. Let's leave abortion out of the presidency from now on and let the states deal with it. It shouldn't even be on our radar anymore…personal choice should be left to the individual not to some religious docterine or presidential candidate. There are much bigger issues to deal with: hunger, war, homelessness, catastrophes, joblessness, crime, terrorism, loss of civil liberties…the list goes on. Just shut this guy up.

Nobody is going to tell me who to vote for, if I could or should have an abortion or if living in sin is wrong. I am a Catholic but I don't go along with every belief and they obviously don't go along with most of Catholics society either. If they did, they wouldn't allow priests to molest young children and get away with it. If you would ask what most Catholics think of Priests marrying, they would tell you that it was ok but they still aren't going to allow it so if they can do what they want, so can I. I tell you what, I was lucky enough not to get pregnant in high school but if I had, I would definitely have considered an abortionand I wouldn't want someone telling me yes or no. If someone already has 6 kids and is pregnant again (so help me) and want to get an abortion instead of me paying for them to sit on there ass, than go ahead. i'm catholic. and against abortion. but i do not let my religious beliefs dictate who i should vote for. that's sad that that has happened. yet another one of the many reasons why so many people have a bad view of catholics and why a lot of people are are raised catholic dont follow the religion as they get older.
Many women kill their unborn children all the time through abortion with selfish reasons, either they just didn't want a baby, its not the "right time" or it isn't convenient for them. Maybe they should have thought about having sex before they got themselves pregnant. A child grows from the moment of conception. It has a heart beat at 10 weeks, which is actually less than three months. When a tree or a flower grows from the ground from a seed, we say its a tree, its growing, nothing else; but a child, apparently isn't a child until 3 months, 4 months, 5 months etc. A normal human being doesn't stop physically growing until ABOUT 25. Mentally we grow until we die. So then is it ok to kill a child who is seven years old? No it isn't so why is it ok to kill a growing baby who could have the potential to become something greater than we could ever believe in. All children are blessings and should never be killed or hurt in any way.
Ok, the church needs to stay out of politics. Heck, any type of religion or religious type of discourse needs to stay out of politics. There is very bad history when religion and politics mix and for that reason religion and state are separated in North America. Let's keep it that way, before things go downhill again.

That's just the way it is; you follow the rules and live a clean life or you are denied the Eucharist.If you commit an unrepentent sin and aren't repentent and haven't been absolved of it thru Confession you are not worthy to receive Communion as it is a sacriledge. You have to have a "pure" soul and be in a state of grace in order to receive.Then again, if they are doing what they know their church says is wrong then they likely don't place a high value on the Eucharist,either. If it's a REAL blasphemy one can even be excommunicated,and having had an abortion is an example.If they don't believe in what the Church teaches then they really shouldn't be there.If you belong to a faith you should follow it fully,and if you don;'t then maybe you should look elsewhere.Why be a part if you don't believe?and if you DO believe you are required to follow a certain expectation and if you fail to do so you must also accept the consequences of your actions and choices.

And…..what…..abortion is a sin….to publicly support someone that is pro abortion, even killing babies that are born having survived a failed aboriont, is just as bad as committing the act. It is saying yes to killing babies…..this is a sin and in the Catholic religion to acknolwedge and repent for your sins is their way of dealing with sin. Not that their ritual of reconciliation is right, as it was originally put in place as a form of power and control of the Catholic clergy over their congregation. Abortion is an issue taht many have, and probably will always debate over. Wow, I wonder how many anti-Catholic comments this will generate. That said, how many of you have seen the bumper stickers that read, "You can't be Catholic AND pro-choice". It is that simple - the Catholic Church states that all life is precious and abortion is a hot-button issue that can't be compromised, no less when voting for a candidate. Let's keep this in perspective—this was one priest in So. Carolina that said this, not an edict from Rome. Additionally, there's talk that Biden may be denied communion in his home parish in MD, but not where he works in Washington DC. Yadda-yadda. If you are not happy with your religion, that's the beauty of it, WE HAVE FREEDOM OF RELIGION. If the Catholic-thing's not workin' for ya, go somewhere else.

Read again what he's saying: He says he'll only deny them Communion if they do not first go to confession. Technically, if a Catholic is in a state of what's called "mortal sin", he isn't supposed to receive Communion. I would say that a vast majority of Catholics don't observe this law. This priest considers voting for Obama a mortal sin and it's within his rights to do so. I don't agree with him at all, but it's his parish and until the bishop/archbishop of his diocese steps in, what he says will stand.
My biggest problem with this is that a McCain government would have advocated and passed policies that would have been considered equally distasteful to Catholics, so it's not as if there was a cut-and-dry voting option for Catholics. I think this priest got it all wrong, but I have no doubt that this will be rectified by his diocese sooner that later.
All of you people who say you are Catholic and don't agree… the term for you is "cafeteria catholic". It simply means that you may agree with some of the doctrine and law, but you want to pick and choose what suits you.
The Catholic church is all or nothing.
And thanks to those of you who realize that while the church and it's members, both past and present, suffered greatly during the sex abuse issue, the church as a whole stands on stengths and values above that. Those were horrific acts that should never have happened, to any child. The church and its children are forever scarred.

I grew up Catholic (actually not a practicing Catholic now..I go to a non denominational church–but still believe in many aspects of the Catholic faith). I just hope people can understand that this is just a small sampling of a radical. This is not what all Catholics are about. I couldn't vote for a president who is going to keep killing our troops in the most misdirected (not our troops fault) war in my lifetime. I have never been to this site before, but a friend told me that this story was on her favorite site. Unfortunately this is the pastor of the church I have attended all my life. Most of us are disgusted be his antics… this being just one of many we have had to deal with the last few years (telling children that santa was a made-up pagan elf at christmas time is another great example). However, I am also shocked by many of your comments. I'm afraid you are all giving him excatly what he wants: attention. You WILL NOT change his mind, believe me. I have tried to talk to him about a more personal issue I had with his rules and complete disregard for the people of his congregation. Also, Catholics should not be so horribly generalized as many of yall are doing on here. You are just as bad as he is when he generalized voters based on one political viewpoint. As for the war talk on here and that done by many of the ridiculous celebrities idolized on this website, I am sick of it. That is insane!!! I have been raised as a Roman Catholic my entire life and one of the major things that we have always been taught is forgiveness and acceptance, God forgives everyone if they ask him for it, and he accepts all! So for this priest to make it his business who people voted for is redic. He has no power like that over his church and should not be a priest if he is going to do something like that.

My mom told me this before the election…that as a Catholic, it would be a sin to vote for Obama. This is the ONLY reason she voted for McCain, was because of each canidate's stand on abortion. I told her it didn't matter what their opinion was, because it's not as if anyone is going to change the laws on abortion the way they are now.
Our country was founded on the belief of seperation of church and state. I am alarmed by the trend, intertwining the republican party with several religions not just Catholicism. This should not be tolerated by our government or our people. I agree that those churchs and their priests/ ministers who insist on preaching their political views should lose their tax exempt status. Keep religion seperate from politics.

Re: Jada – First of all, a mature adult knows better than to speak collectively of any group. The sexual abuse issue with the catholic church involved a tiny segement of the Priests. Read a previous post of mine, and you'll note I addressed that issue.
You do not "owe everything you do in life" to the church, but as with ANY religion, it is your moral and spiritual responsibility to live your life in accordance with those beliefs.
Separation of church and state keeps the U.S. from being just like Iran, although too many don't understand how important this doctrine is for personal freedom

Even one of the most Catholic of places, France, there is a separation of church and state and it is PRACTICED. They learned the hard way through history that when the church meddle with the state's issue, it becomes catastrophic. I guess the USA has to learn the hard way and put away the Catholic church away from people's laws of the land for good.

Re: TorontoMike – I agree. As a devout orthodox RC I am strongly pro-life and follow the Magisterium of the church,but I too felt torn with the US election. On one hand I supported McCain in regards to the pro-life issue(whereas Obama is strongly pro-abort)….but I also do NOT support the unjust war in Iraq that he supports( but that Obama wants to put an end to;) it's oftentimes that one politician or one political party will not agree with our conscience and there's a bit in each that we agree with and also a part that we don't.
