South Carolina Catholic Priest Says No Communion Wafers For Unrepentant Obama Voters

South Carolina Catholic priest Jay Scott Newman has told his parishioners in a letter that if they voted 'Barack Hussein Obama' and don't ask for forgiveness for doing so before taking the Body and Blood of Christ, their souls will be at risk!
His reason?
Says the priest, "Our nation has chosen for its chief executive the most radical pro-abortion politician ever to serve in the United States Senate or to run for president. Voting for a pro-abortion politician when a plausible pro-life alternative exists constitutes material cooperation with intrinsic evil, and those Catholics who do so place themselves outside of the full communion of Christ's Church and under the judgment of divine law. Persons in this condition should not receive Holy Communion until and unless they are reconciled to God in the Sacrament of Penance, lest they eat and drink their own condemnation."

The key to stopping abortion is preventing unwanted pregnancies. Aggressive sex-ed, birth control, condoms, and the the morning after pill ( research it, it's not an abortion) would do a lot of good. But the Church thinks those things are evil, too! You just can't win with them.

I guess i'm just lucky that my church is run by liberal jesuit preists. honestly (and I am proof of this) not all catholics belive this way. Personally if I were one of those parishioners, I'd start going to mass at a completely different parish and I'd let the Bishop know that I was extremely unhappy with what I consider to be the local priest making up his own communion rules.
St. Mary's is part of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Charleston and there's like 90 different Catholic churches to choose from out there. There's 2 other ones in that city, St. Anthony and also Our Lady of the Rosary, so there's other choices if you don't like that priest.

If you are a member of the Roman Catholic Church you do NOT believe in abortion. If you do believe in abortion and do think abortion is okay, then you are not a Catholic because you do not agree with the pope. So in a way, this priest is doing the right thing by helping the people in his church to stay on the path that they are choosing by being catholic. He has every right. However, the church does not support any individual candidate so he should not say "if they voted for Obama." He should be saying if they voted for a "pro abortion candidate."

But I know 100% that it's not right for some guy in a suit to judge whether I should or should not keep a baby which I may or may not be able to take care of post-birth. It's not right for anyone to decide what anyone should or shouldn't do with their body. Your body, your choice. Worry about murderers who are killing people who are actually living outside of their mother's bodies, not women who can't handle having a baby at the time (if they don't want to be abstinent, they don't have to…don't feed me that bullshit cause I don't want to hear it). For non-Catholics, I will try to explain what's happening in layman's terms:
Father Newman believes that voting for Obama, a politician he considers to be "pro-abortion" is a "mortal sin". According to the Catechism, if a Catholic has a mortal sin on his conscience, he cannot receive Communion without going to Confession first. In Newman's eyes, a vote for Obama puts you in that state. Since this is Newman's parish, he has every right to try to enforce this, but his plan is incredibly flawed.
Firstly, a vast majority of Catholics receive Communion even if they're in a state of mortal sin. That tenet of Catholicism is greatly overlooked by most. Secondly, how is Father Newman possibly going to know who voted for Obama if his parishioners choose not to tell him? Thirdly, and most damning to Father Newman's stance, John McCain's platform also featured many policies that Catholics would find troubling. There wasn't a "perfect" candidate for Catholics, so I can't see what Newman's trying to say here. Essentially, you can argue that anybody who voted for either candidate committed a mortal sin, which is absurd.
Surely, the bishop of Newman's diocese will issue a statement clarifying his position and disagreeing with Newman's assessment of things, but the bottom line is, it's up to the individual Catholic to determine if he or she is fit to receive Communion.

I was born, raised, and confirmed as a Catholic. I'm still a practicing Catholic. I voted for Obama and, despite the stance of the church, I'm pro-choice [pro-women-having-the-choice] and I fail to understand where this man believes he has the right to say that. I understand the freedom of speech but I don't think I'll feel any less entitled when I receive Communion this weekend at Mass because I know that God isn't nearly as judgmental as this man apparently is.
