South Carolina Catholic Priest Says No Communion Wafers For Unrepentant Obama Voters

South Carolina Catholic priest Jay Scott Newman has told his parishioners in a letter that if they voted 'Barack Hussein Obama' and don't ask for forgiveness for doing so before taking the Body and Blood of Christ, their souls will be at risk!
His reason?
Says the priest, "Our nation has chosen for its chief executive the most radical pro-abortion politician ever to serve in the United States Senate or to run for president. Voting for a pro-abortion politician when a plausible pro-life alternative exists constitutes material cooperation with intrinsic evil, and those Catholics who do so place themselves outside of the full communion of Christ's Church and under the judgment of divine law. Persons in this condition should not receive Holy Communion until and unless they are reconciled to God in the Sacrament of Penance, lest they eat and drink their own condemnation."

I was raised Catholic, but I stopped going due to the hypocrisy. Anyway, my parents - particuarly my mother - are major Catholics. She goes to church ever morning when there is mass. Her sister sent a bulletin from their church saying they should not vote for Obama due to the abortion issue. Like the mormons, it's illegal to promote a politcal candidate (John McCain) over another. My mother has a mind of her own and she and my father - in their 70's - volunteered for weeks for the Obama campaign here in Colorado. Both the Mormons and the Catholics should lose their status as tax-exempt. I'll never go to church again because of things like this - some bulletins from other churchs outright told people they had to vote for McCain.

Well, this doesn't make sense. You would think the sin of abortion is the only sin he considers sin. I wonder how many hypocrites in his church, to which he has given communion, haven't spoke of or repented for the many other sins they've committed.
Okay, I live in Greenville, SC, which is where this church/priest serves. As far as the spiritual element of this goes, if a Catholic were to endorse a behavior that the Church believed went against the basic values of the faith, then said Catholic would be required to do penance before taking Communion. Beyond that, it is kinda ridiculous to require something of someone that will obviously be extremely controversial. Personally, I don't think Obama's worth this much attention…I'm sure he'll do just fine as a president but he's not as wonderful or terrible as people make him out to be…he's just a dude, no better or worse than you or me.

The priest has every right to state his opinion as an American citizen first off. Secondly, as a priest of the Catholic church, it is his obligation to guide his parish with what the teachings of the church are, he is letting them know that these are the teachings of the church and as a Catholic you should vote according to those teachings. And according to Catholic doctrine abortion is the only political issue that has a direct moral effect on a person, the economy is indirect, the war is indirect etc. Therefore, as a Catholic, it is a sin to have voted in favor of a candidate who supports the most pro-abortion laws in the history of this country and when you are in a state of sin you are not supposed to receive communion until after confession so the priest is just doing his priestly obligation. Read up on the actual doctrines and laws of the church before just assuming anything people.

Not only did the bishops denounce Joe Biden, but a cardinal of the catholic church formally announced that as a Catholic voter the abortion issue must take precedence and you cannot vote for the pro-choice canidate. While the vatican cannot endorse a canidate for tax and other reasons, it is clear that over everything else the pro-life issue is the most important. it doesnt matter who it is to the church, it could of been Obama who is pro-life and that is who we should vote for. Without life, you don't have war or taxes or anything else. And no "condemning" people isnt "acting as God" maybe you should pick up some papal ensyclicals and see what John Paul II says about abortion. So this comment is not out of line or crazy it all, it is perfectly normal. Catholics who are ill-informed enough to vote for Obama should maybe google image search abortion and see what they voted for.

It is not just Jesus' life, it is a book given to us by God through man. It is not like a book by Martin Luther King, it is not a book written by a huge leader of the time (Jesus). And the church does not believe in gay marriage because marriage is an instituion given to us by God for a MAN AND WOMAN. Of course gay people should have more than a civil union and have more rights under it, but why does it have to be called marriage? And seperation of church and state when people use it like this is crap because when it comes to things like abortion and marriage, peoples morals and all of these things like marriage come from religion in the first place so thats not even a good argument. MOST Catholics actually think this whole "Obama supports and encourages abortions" thing is absurd. A real Catholic believes in free will, aka choice, meaning, its your CHOICE, but we are against having them ourselves… Well, at least all the Catholics I know…so apparently no communion for me. I voted Obama.

And yes we have free will, but we have to control it by following the commandments esp. thou shall not kill! Thats like saying its not okay for us Catholics to murder our mothers but its ok for other people, its their "choice". This is documented: The first popes and priest were allowed to marry. That changed because the church (all of them) is a money machine and they didn't want the priest producing heirs and having the money leave the church. Hence, celebacy. My point is, they make this shit up as they go along. I left that crap at 15 and haven't looked back.
I'm not catholic, but I voted for Obama and after he won I asked Christ to forgive me. Just in case.
Re: Johnson – actually matricide and abortion are two completely separate things. according to npr.org, only 0.2% of abortions are performed after 20 weeks. the majority of procedures are performed before the embryo even develops into a fetus (which is around the 11th week).
to compare a grown woman, a mother, to something that is not even alive is just ludicrous. homicide and abortion are not even on the same level. next time, try not to speak unless you know what you're talking about. thanks.
