Oprah Sends Thoughts and Prayers to Her Montecito Neighbors
Filed under: Oprah Winfrey > Sad Sad
As we mentioned earlier, a destructive wildfire that broke out Thursday has claimed over 80 structures in the ritzy Montecito area of California.
Oprah Winfrey is one of the many famous figures who has/had a home in the community.
She started Friday's Oprah Winfrey Show with a message to her California neighbors:
"The first thing I wanted to talk about is the raging fire burning right now in my neighborhood of Montecito, Calif. All our prayers are with all the folks and neighbors in Santa Barbara. Hope you're well today. And those of you who lost your homes, our hearts go out to you."
Another famous Montecito resident, actor Rob Lowe, called into the show and recounted evacuating his home.
"We got in the car, pulled out of the driveway and the entire mountain behind us was flames, 200 feet high, shooting into the air…This thing came on so fast, you just can't believe it… I'm very lucky. My house is fine. Although I'm looking—I'm talking to you right now and I'm looking out of my office and I can see the smoke billowing still… I've lived out here since 1976 and seen a lot of fires, but last night…I mean, I watched 12, 13 homes burn to the ground. It's so tragic. It's so sad. And this is the worst I have ever seen by far."
In case you were wondering, Oprah's home has, so far, survived the fires. Super O's home is less than a mile from several homes devastated in the blaze and within several hundred yards of the mandatory evacuation zone.
Our thoughts and prayers go out, too, to all the fire victims.

you have just ensured that any future tot of yours will have your overbite, chipmunk cheeks, weak chin, dimply ass, and pigeon toes…….karma
of all the things to report on about these horrible fires you tell us that oprah's house is fine…oh thank god. seriously. im a student here in santa barbara
and there is plenty PLENTY more you could be talking about. what about westmont? or the other 100 structures that have been burned to the ground. or the 13 people in the hospital. there are bigger things in this world perez than oprah. my heart goes out to everyone effected by the fires (not just oprah) and i hope the same goes for everyone.
who cares
Ummmmmm, Doesn't Oprah have like 10 houses?!?! Who cares if she loses one of them.
Poor Oprah. Second?
She could fucking lose a house and she'd never know. It's probably full of pictures of her and Obama any way.
i'm sure that these rich people have insurance out the ass.. who gives a shit?
Re: mamajud – ok……..that's weird………i posted that on separated at birth??………oh well…….1st!
damn…
The residents are very wealthy and have other homes to live. I would feel sorry for any people who are now living in the street.
What a ridiculous thing to say - what does it help to pray???
why do you Americans always just start "to pray" instead of taking PRECAUTIONS against environmental catastrophes and taqking a good look at the REAL reasons for some of the bad things happening? (for example, there was criminal negligence(!!) on the State s part before the Katrina catastrophe in New Orleans a.s.o.) - and all you do is "pray" - and then move on and wait for the NEXT catastrophe that COULD have been prevented to happen!
My heart goes out to the victims of that inferno. However, I'm sure Rob Lowe, Oprah, and these other celebs can replace one of their multi-million dollar houses in a snap. What's one house to them when they have 7 more.
I live here and it was pretty smoky & stinky this morning. Most of those houses are million dollars homes. Sad thing is I heard there's a college campus that was ruined. Sad thing to lose all of your belongings and momentos. Seeing the pictures, seemed pretty damn scary.
People shouldn't live up there in those mountains IMO. It's too risky.
Oprah should do more than send thoughts and prayers. Those neighbors may need food/shelter, even in an affluent area.
Perez only speaks the cute truth people come on get with the fucking program………
why did I think she was grabbing her trap? lmao
The Kelowna, BC Forest Fire a few years ago, claimed my sisters house. It was a scary and sad time. regardless of how much money you have it is an awful thing to go through. Lets hope Karma doesn't claim your homes for nasty comments on this site!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
well yeah her house is fine, you know shes gotta be paying some fire fighters under the table to keep her shit safe
I LOATHE OPRAH
instead of sending thoughts and prayers maybe she can open up her chequebook and send some cash
ok
who the fuck cares about oprah or rob lowe
theyll be fine even if their houses burn down while real people like the actual residents of sb dont have 50 other houses to go to.
youre just reporting on the "famous people" because theyre "famous"
try reporting on someone real
whos had their house burn down already
I know plenty of people who are now homeless and this is just the second day of the fire
and its 0% contained right now
Re: asscrack –
You are an idiot. You obviously have no idea about the people who live in this area. Sure, Montecito has a reputation for being really wealthy, but there are regular normal families all over that are losing their homes, and you are only making yourself look ignorant. Celebrities aren't the only people who live there, and most people can't just move into one of their other many houses because they don't have them. These are people losing their homes and memories and it's a serious tragedy.
being away from santa barbara, where i am originally from, and where my family still lives, I find it EXTREMELY frustrating that as I look for information regarding this fire all I seem to find are reports of Oprah and Rob Lowe's houses in danger. Hundreds of families have been effected by this fire. Yes it originally started in the hills of Montecito, but as of 9 last night it began making its way down the hill and now is threatening the poorer areas of Santa Barbara. This fire is in now way only effecting the wealthy…. families living 15 to a 2 bedroom house are now being forced to evacuate. Please keep the families of Santa Barbara in your thoughts, and yes Oprah and Rob Lowe as well. But please, let us not ONLY focus on Oprah and Rob Lowe.
Pereze,
.
I have been in tears since Oprah had to move out of her house. Stedman, the cocker spaniels, and all their furniture are homeless. Are you going to start a relief fund for Oprah and Rob Lowe? We need to be generous to these icons of American celebutites. I will donate $10,000 to the cause if you will head the committee.
ah jesus its soooo hard to watch millions of $$ burn down all the people who worked so hard building this!!
i hope people stay safe
okay so that comment way bellow about it being obama supporters is a bunch of bs. i live in sb and not all rich people live there. a lot of them rent out pool houses to students and i have a lot of classmates that rent places near it and got evacuated so i think some of you can have a little heart.
My concern is about all of the good people who have had their homes foreclosed on.
oprah…who cares!
Yep prayers, that will help ya rich bitch…
Oh Please, anyone living in that area knows the risks…this is one of those risks. And anyone who lives in that area, can afford a new home (or the repairs). C'mon, Oprah and Rob Lowe–they're not exactly in need of help from the Red Cross..
I do wonder if this neighborhood had been lower class, if the Gov. would have declared a state of emergency. NOT. A. CHANCE.
seriously…if it wasn't her neighbourhood burning she would'nt give a crap.
Rich people's houses are burning boo-hoo!! who gives a flying fuck it's all over t.v. they need to get over it. They can just buy a new house, big deal. What about the students?? it sucks to be a college student and have your apartment or place burning especially since midterms are almost here!!
I was flipping around and saw her show was about this today. Fucking boreing. I don't care that some asshole's mansion was burnt down. So sorry you'll have to stay in your 3.5 mill 3 bedroom, 5 bathroom condo and slum until your mansion is rebuilt. Boo fucking hoo.
Who cares about these people's houses. They live in one of the wealthiest place in the country. They are so filthy rich they probably have other houses to live in and probably get a ton of money from their insurance company.
perez, the only reason you even posted this is because it had something to do with a celebrity, you couldn't give 2 shits about how all the poor families houses got burned down.
thoughts and prayers??? send some cash money oprah "moneybags" winfrey! maybe most people there don't need the extra help but there may be a few who will be homeless…be a dear and write a nice fat check…c'mon
Gee I hope Gail is safe
Why is O grabbing her squeeze box? Fire makes her horny?
…was Linsday Lohan smoking in that area? "Something's Missing" and it is very tragic indeed…
Re: Punky Brewster –
You are an ignorant douchebag and completely full of shit. I am born and raised in Santa Barbara and your comment had no validity whatsoever. Many people w/houses here simply cannot afford to "buy another house," especially w/the current status of the economy. Many people's houses have been passed down from generation to generation, which is why they are fortunate enough to live Santa Barbara during these current times.
She probably startD it 2 help pay 4 Prez elect O's campaign
Blessings & Bliss OM
It's really hard to feel sorry for anyone with that much money, and I'm sure they have insurance. Could you not possibly discuss the plight of all the Americans who are or will be losing their houses due to the Depression (thanks Bush!! you prick)
Re: Duckie – Because the religious are inherently hypocritical.
Re: PeachHipGirl – You may want to do some research on how our government works. The president is not the one who decides how the bailout is spent….that would be CONGRESS. You might want to get your facts straight and get angry at those who run the congress (currently the dems) because they are the ones choosing to spend the bailout (that was originally designed to help individuals in foreclosure and get the lending system back up and running) in other ways…NOT BUSH.
My Aunt and Uncle lived directly above Westmont College on East Mountain Dr. Sadly today they found out EVERYTHING is gone. I was born and raised in Santa Barbara and am so tired of hearing about Oprah and all the stars who ALMOST lost thier homes. They have mansions that are surrounded by plush gardens and land, The REAL people of E Mountain Dr, Gibralter road Cayote Rd and much more have lived there for years and had quaint homey homes. NOT everyone who lives in Montecito is rich. SO while my family is pulling together to help my Aunt and Uncle, by the way my grandfathers Purple Heart and Medals from World War 2 were melted, All the stars have OTHER homes to go to if they wish, Hell Oprah propbably has her own fire department.
Re: =meowmeow= – Sadly you jerk it is the media that makes it all look so rich. I was born and raised there and my family is NOT rich, And a little FYI many insurnace companies would not insure AND My family had a house that was burned down,
