Filed under: Icky Icky PooIn this great article from The New York Times today, the paper of record explains how were it not for the hate-filled leaders of the Mormon church, the unfair Proposition 8 would NOT have passed in California, writing discrimination into the state constitution.
And the Mormon church is proud of it in the Times article!
Perez has been to the Sundance Film Festival for the last three years in a row, but we will not be attending this year. And, we call on everyone in the entertainment industry to do the same.

That's the thing, it isn't. It's about EQUAL RIGHTS. The churches can dictate their own rules in however way they want, if you belong to THAT church but we all belong to THIS Gov. so they should give everyone equal rights to begin with.

California has voted this way twice, the majority of the state has voiced their opinion. Pinning the reason why prop 8 passed on Mormons and Catholics is ridiculous. I also want to add…You can't go backwards….are you saying the gov. should not be issuing marriage licenses at all? If so, good idea but impractical because like I said, you can't make ex-post factor law. It's better to ensure equality for all now.
Give me a break. Nobody took away any rights. Anyone can marry any other person of the opposite sex. No rights were taken away. I live in California. I voted for Prop 8. I am not religious. You need to fix the issues with civil unions or come up with a different term other than marriage. Marriage is between a man and a woman. I have no problems with gay couples and their desire for rights the same as marriage - I just have a problem with you using our term/name.

My point is this, the concept of marriage is one deeply rooted in religion, of that there is not doubt, so let the religious zealots keep their term. A secular government should not be promoting religious based institutions; therefore, it is time to overhaul the system to reflect a uniform, solely secular process for ALL, in regards to licensure, tax relief, spousal rights etc. The same civil rights for all, and it should not fall uder the term, "marriage" for both heterosexual and homosexual couples. Those churches that don't believe in it won't do it, and the ones that do will, but either way all will have equal civil rights and protection under the law. I just added the Libertarian and unorthodox church views to show that there are more then two ways to think about the issue. It helps to get people thinking outside the box. (2)

The Sundance film festival isn't run by the Mormon church. Yes it takes place in Utah, but the Mormon church isn't involved. If anything the church might not even let its members go since R rated movies are shown. Sundance and the Mormon Church are 2 different things dollface.

Nobody wants to hurt the Sundance film festival or Robert Redford who is awesome. This is a great example of cutting off your nose to spite your face. Park City, UT is a very progressive town in the middle of a very conservative state. The festival is an arena for creative expression and a forum for discussing important social and political issues through the medium of film–NOTHING about the Sundance film festival suggests the closed minded bigotry you are accusing it of. To boycott Sundance to 'get back at the Mormons' would be ridiculous, considering the festival is in no way sponsored by the LDS church and is simply held in Utah because that is where Robert Redford found inspiration decades ago when starting the Sundance Institute. (Not to mention supporting the Park City economy allows one of the few progressive towns in the state to have a greater influence in the culture of the state as a whole). So while your outrage is understandable, your anger is misplaced and it makes an otherwise socially conscientious individual come across as a knee jerk liberal who didn't give a moment's thought before flying off the hinge.

There weren't people from Utah in the voting booth, only Californians. Even if mormons funded Yes on prop 8, I highly doubt that influenced many, there was a ton of funding against prop 8 as well. The vote in the past ended with the same result. Utah, Sundance, and Mormons aren't at fault. Most Californians do not support gay marriage and they voted in that way. I wouldn't point all the fingers at republicans either. California is a solid blue state and has been for very long time. Democrats are very clearly the majority. The state obviously have liberal voters not in support of gay marriage.

Prop 8 will be overturned soon.
The California Constitution requires that any measure attempting to revise the underlying principles of the constitution must first be approved by a two-thirds vote of the legislature before being submitted to the voters. Proposition 8 was not approved through that constitutionally required process.
The 14th Amendment says in part that "no state shall deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws."

Secondly if I cant have an opinion on what happens to people in utah ,why did the mormon cult funnel all their cult money to hurt gay people in California. Secondly when you look at the map of the 52-48 vote in favor of bigotry, the only places most people would want to live would be where the gay frieindly side. And guess what!? They only make up 2% of the population. So Why don't you go protest the Methodists (majority of the population) and the Blacks and Latinos.
