And the Mormon church is proud of it in the Times article!
Perez has been to the Sundance Film Festival for the last three years in a row, but we will not be attending this year. And, we call on everyone in the entertainment industry to do the same.

I agree 100% with Perez. It WAS the mormons that turned this thing - they were the ones that mostly financed this campaign of lies eg. "gays are coming to teach your children in school! and you can't stop them!" AKA FLAT OUT LIES. Ironically the church that faced so much prejudice because of its marriages when it started is now going around telling OTHER people what kind of marriages they can and can't have. fucking hypocrites, and they need to understand, this is unacceptable in America.
and sadly i was raised by them and i saw, with my own eyes this election season, the seething hatred and bigotry they gleefully spread around in the name of "gods love" and "family." I don't think protesting the entire state of Utah is proving a point. As a lesbian in California, I definitely want to fight this full force, but I can't help but think this is kind of stupid. Sundance is in Utah, but that doesn't immediately make it a Mormon event. You want to do something, fight to get the Mormon church's tax exemption revoked for violating codes separating church and state.

Hey. I live in Utah and Sundance has nothing to do with the LDS church. Not only does it take place in Park City, the least mormon place in Utah, but those business owners shouldn't have to suffer for something they had nothing to do with. Salt Lake City and Park City have 2 of the lowest LDS populations..they're all out by Provo and such where BYU is. Don't take away from independent movie makers…sundance has nothing to do with Utah. this is making a stereotype about Utah…we're not all Mormon here ya know?!

As if Hollywood is going to boycott their own industry, considering that the boycott would serve no purpose, and would be aimed at hurting an entire community just because some of them have an affinity to a particular religious faith. Too bad you can't seem to understand that even if the Mormon Church did invite their faithful to support Prop 8, then those voters are adults who are entitled to cast their vote on that advice, if they so choose. The bottom line is that more people in the culture choose Not to allow same-gender marriages in THEIR culture, so you need to recognize that you are a minority that was outnumbered. It's not rocket science. Much as I dislike most of what Perez spouts, I don't get the pro-Prop8 side. Prop 8 got voted through on a slim majority. Other than the attempted repeal that occupies most of the posts on this site that's pretty much it. I understand the anti-Prop8 lobby and I believe I support same sex marriage. If you take religion out of the equation I don't see any major issue when you limit the discussion to same sex marriage. Forget continuation of the species. Marriage is not about continuation of the species. Should 2 gays get marriaged in church? No, I think not. Could 2 gays be married by the state in a suitable ceremony? Why not? I've yet to hear a convincing argument against.

Dude, 51% of people that reside in Salt Lake City ARE NOT mormon. One of the biggest events held annually in SLC is the Pride Festival, a three day celebration of equality and gay rights. People come from all over the state to support the cause. As for the Sundance Film Festival, if you want to "stick it to mormons" you will support the festival, since the majority of businesses that are involved in the festival are not involved with the church at all. Also Perez, seeing that the majority of those who voted for Prop 8 in Cali are minorities, and you in fact have Latino heritage, how can you boycott a state based on what the minority of that state believes? Would you encourage people to boycott businesses owned by Latino/Hispanics or African-americans? Learn your facts before you talk shit about Utah. There are a vast majority of us who live here who support the cause and wish equality for everyone, and we shouldn't be punished for what the church believes. It's a religion, not a governing body.

WTF? Robert Redford isn't a Mormon, and there's no connection between Sundance and the Mormon church. The Film Festival's Director of Programming lives in California and married his partner there last month. The Sundance Institute and Film Festival has supported and debuted many gay-themed films like The Laramie Project. It makes no sense to boycott them just because they happen to be in the same state with the headquarters of the Mormon church.
