How confused do you think gay people who believe in the Word of the bible feel? I feel sorry for them because they know what GOD says is a sin (the act of homosexuality) yet they know they must stay true to their heart. I, myself, would never ask a gay person to change. Be gay all you want!

   I am not stating my views simply because I am straight… that has nothing to do with it. I'm sure it does for some people, but not me. My life doesn't change if gay persons are allowed to marry. People WERE and HAVE been persecuted for their beliefs in God or whomever they worshiped and told they cannot attend Church or religious gatherings in other countries. People have been put to death for their beliefs… simply because they went against what someone told them to believe. Christians were persecuted for years in the past.

    Luckily, in my own country in this day and age, I am allowed to attend Church freely, just as gay people are allowed to practice whatever role they want to play in their own lives. Key word: FREELY! No gay person is being persecuted by the government for being homosexual. No law is in place that says it's criminal to be gay or partake in the act of being gay. I don't HAVE to go to Church to feel Christian and read my bible, so taking my right to attend Church services would indeed be sad, but I don't need it. Church is a place to gather with others who share in your beliefs, share in the Word of the bible, and represent God. Yet, at the same time… I get the same satisfaction from reading the bible alone.

    Someone explain to me why so many states are protesting prop 8, but most of those states don't allow gay marriage themselves. I think gay marriage should be legal everywhere, but protesting CA's laws from places like Norfolk is stupid. For the states like MA and CT that already allow it, sure, show your support to CA, but for the rest of y'all, maybe you ought to focus on your OWN state's government and get gay marriage legalized closer to home. Not that CA doesn't appreciate your support- it just seems a little hypocritical, is all. Anyways, if you aren't a legal CA resident, what you want for California doesn't really matter in they eyes of the law.

First off… california does not permit civil unions, they permit domestic partnerships… which are different. So before you go off spouting off about civil unions you better find out what you're talking about, there are only 6 states that allow civil unions, 1 allows marriage and 2 allow domestic partnerships.. that's it. so here are some of the basic differences.

    1) recognition in other states. If a hetero sexual is married in California, they can move anywhere in the country and that partnership is recognized everywhere. A homosexual that enters into a civil union, or domestic partnership, or marriage in their home state and move to another state - that union is not recognized.
    2) Immigration. If you fall in love with a foreigner you can marry them and through the immigration process that person can become an American citizen and legally live in this country. Not the same for a same sex couple. The relationship they have with forigners has no barring on their immigration status.

    Those are just a FEW of the rights. The General Accounting Office in 1997 released a list of 1,049 benefits and protections available to heterosexual married couples. These benefits range from federal benefits, such as survivor benefits through Social Security, sick leave to care for ailing partner, tax breaks, veterans benefits and insurance breaks. They also include things like family discounts, obtaining family insurance through your employer, visiting your spouse in the hospital and making medical decisions if your partner is unable to. Civil Unions protect some of these rights, but not all of them.

    A lawyer can set up many of these things that are AUTOMATICALLY granted same sex couples. A marriage license cost about $100 and automatically grants all these basic rights, if you are a homosexual couple and want these basic rights, you'd have to pay a lawyer thousands of dollars.

    I try to be respectful of others beliefs around me. What really makes me angry is most of the religious right does not do the same. The moment they learn of someone believing in something they do not they spout "sinner" and try to demolish those beliefs. They spend massive amounts of money and energy trying to deny basic human rights to others. They spread the word of hatred instead of spreading the word of love as their religeon intended.

    I have spent a good amount of time behind the doors of religious institutions trying to find peace. Finally I found that true peace comes from within, not from a book or a building. I am sad for the people who are so entombed within their hatred that they can no longer live lives in reality. Wake up and see that the world has changed and we need to change with it or be destroyed.

    I truly believe that if Jesus were to walk the earth today he would be very sad to know that people were persecuting others in his name. Judge not lest ye be judged.

But I have such a problem with those of you who do not back up your belief in that, many of you who are opposed to Gay marriage have made the point loud and clear with no facts to back up what they say. Gays have not harmed or offended you in anyways so why would you take away their right to love someone? You basically took away freedom from people who have done nothing to you. i can't understand why a persons sexual choice offends you all so much. Gays have a much larger capacity for love and compassion that most straight people have shown.     Ok, really…why the protesting? The people voted and the decision has been made about Prop 8. I'm not saying I'm against gay marriage but that's how democracy works. I know quite a bit of folks who wanted McCain to win but they're not protesting and pitching fits because he lost. They're dealing with it because they have to. Just GIVE IT A REST!     Have you ever heard of "Separation of CHURCH and STATE"? Because I'm pretty sure that is one of basic stances of out constitution. In which case, if marriage shouldn't be allowed for gays because it is against religion, then a union between a man and a woman that are not affiliated with a church should not be called marriage either. More specifically, since we are a "Christian" nation, if you don't identify with the Christian church you can't get married. That means YOU couldn't get married since you don't identify as a Christian (sounds ridiculous right?).

    This is not a religious issue but a civil one because of this one eenie weenie little detail that most people seem to forget about. When it comes from the government, it is not a religious marriage. And gay people are not asking for it to be.

    Our country was founded by people trying to escape religious persecution, yet religion seems to take over all of our politics, and Christianity seems to be the only religion that's okay to have in this country.

    As an atheist, I am offended and often feel alienated in my own country because of the dominance Christianity has on everything.

    I stopped saying the Pledge of Allegiance when I was a little kid because of the whole "one nation under God" business, I hate that all of my money, that I work bloody hard for, says "In God We Trust" on it, and I feel alienated every time our leaders say God bless America.

    Frankly, I think it's time that the whole separation of church and state becomes true again, and people start thinking for the well being of the country, not the well being of their religion.

    NO on H8, and no on ANY law, bill, constitutional amendment, whatever that bars a human from having the same rights and access to simple things like MARRIAGE that his neighbor has.
