Wanda Sykes Comes Out!

Filed under: Gay Gay Gay > Inspiration

Comedian Wanda Sykes surprised the organizers of the gay rights rally in Las Vegas on Saturday by not only showing up - she was in town to perform standup - but also coming out publicly as a lesbian for the first time.

Yes! Yes! Yes!

More celebs should follow her lead!!!!!!

If people of color saw more gay and lesbian examples in the media - yes, Queen Latifah, we're talking to you - then maybe the black vote would not have been 70% in favor of banning gay marriage.

hahahahaha she was married once too

  2. 102

    what an inspiration!

  3. 103

    Too funny.

Who is she/he and why would this influence my vote?

  4. 104

Wow I didnt know she was gay! And stop pointing the vote at the black people cause noone cares about you gays anymore cause youve gotten dam annoying with these rallies!

  5. 105

Re: MarleyRai – youre right girl.i got mad to the black community, but you have a point!

  6. 106

"then maybe the black vote would not have been 70% in favor of banning gay marriage."

  7. 107

Personally, I thought Wanda made it pretty clear that she was gay on her Halloween appearance on The Ellen Show. It was actually really funny, what she had to say. She didn't seem to be covering anything about her sexual preference up at all, plus what she said about the non-voters was hilarious!

  8. 108

Get over it…I'm sick of peole trying to blame Black people for this not passing. What more do you want? The gay community is prominent all over, hell you've got openly gay talk show hosts all over the place. There's a Black man as president now, so I don't want to hear Black people complaining anymore about what they don't have. Likewise with gays.

  9. 109

What an IDIOT! Gay people are STILL being murdered to this day for their orientation! Most states do NOT protect gays against losing their jobs, their homes, their insurance or families for being out. I live in Michigan and the state's Discrimination Law protects against color, age, national origin, religion, creed and even PRIOR CRIMINAL CONVICTION! You can come here & give our illustrious mayor a job (when he gets out of jail) but my brother could lose his with NO LEGAL RECOURSE. So don't even think that "gay rights" are ANY different than other civil rights issues! EQUALITY FOR ALL!

Perez knock it the fuck off and stop blaming anyone other then yourself for being gay in the first place….thats why it didnt pass…God made an example of a state that everybody just guessed was all about the gays….NOT!! ANd blacks did not made up the biggest percentage all together so get your facts straight…

    i like wanda she cool

  11. 111

When will you stop bullying people to come out? That's a highly personal decision that is, quite frankly, none of your fucking business.

  12. 112

    STFU YOU STUPID TWAT!

  13. 113

Perez…do your homework!!! Wanda came out on Ellen about a week ago

  14. 114

Re: Yaddah – Just because I believe in God doesn't mean I can't swear! I never said I'm a saint!

  15. 115

    Thank you Wanda.

Queer People of Color (QPOC) are rallying all over the nation to build that bridge between minority communities and the gay community. Please join us!

    House of Bezz

  16. 116

Good for her! I love Wanda Sykes!!!

  17. 117

YOU GO WANDA!!! I am all for someone being secure with who they are. I wish we all could feel that way. Maybe there wouldn't be so much hate and discrimination.

  18. 118

Re: RDRH – That's fantastic…call someone uneducated, yet be ignorant enough to follow that up by calling him a spic. Kudos to you!

  19. 119

Perez Hilton (or whatever his real name is) has blocked my IP address from posting comments. "Well, what kind of hate-filled, filthy speeched comments were you leaving?" you might be asking yourself… Hmmm, let's see, there was scripture from the Bible… oh, and then there was scripture from the Bible again…. what else, oh, right - scripture from the Bible. FREE SPEECH MY @$$ - Perez & his lemmings are some of the most small minded, hypocritical, idiotic, sorry excuses for human beings I've come across in my life. He's a bottom feeder - and since the election, his site has basically become a gay rest stop - ew….I shudder just thinking about the kind of people that are Perez Cheerleaders… so sad, so easily swayed…. Perez doesn't like people posting the TRUTH - and we're told about people like him and his lemmings in John 1:5 - And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not… Perez silnces that which he doesn't understand… the mark of a small man. Sad.

  20. 120

Re: kennnnn – Yet you're not intelligent enough to realize that there's only one "n" in "ken." Stfu!

  21. 121

You know, honestly Perez…speaking as a gay man myself. The choice to come out is a personal one, not everyone in this country is in a position to do so, and if they did..could face bodily harm or loss of employment. I am all for civil rights, but your constant "outings" and slanderous statements against celebrities who you "assume" are gay are really in poor taste. Even if more celebrities came out who would it benefit, maybe themselves…but the community? Doubtful. I am here on the East Coast, and it has been very difficult to pry local gays and lesbians to rallies against the passing of Prop 8, so ponder this…..spend less time on whos in or out, and more time trying to constructivley inspire a community of people…..who, sad to say…seem to have other things to do at the moment.

  22. 122

Re: suckmycockbarack – If you are so against it then why the hell are you on a site that is ran by a gay man. You do know you are supporting him be visiting this site right?

  23. 123

Dude, Perez, don't be an idiot. The black vote didn't come anywhere NEAR to making the majority for yes on Prop 8. If you look at the age divide, more older white voters voted yes than younger white voters, and more older black voters voted yes than younger ones. Those stats about the black electorate tipping the scales on prop 8 is just racist BS cooked up by conservatives to give the Gay Community someone to blame other than Mormons and old straight white men, demographics that had a far larger influence on the vote than the black electorate.
It's sad to see that the "Gay Rights" movement has gotten so white, rich, "respectable" and racist.

  24. 124

Re: NWKoftheWKs – Speak on it.

  25. 125

perez your really stupid if you think wanda and queen latifah comming out is going to get blacks to surrport gay marriage black people will never accept it the black chruch won't dare to help gays in anyway

  26. 126

    that's awesome, good for her!

  27. 127

I'm a Latina and more gay Latinas are not gonna convince me to vote YES. I can't believe you would even think that and whats worse is your posting it for "millions" to read. YOUR IGNORANCE IS UP FOR ALL TO SEE!

  28. 128

Re: WildOrchid1298 – Cuz I like to read the stupidity of people who think they are BORN gay!! hahahahahaha. You chose who you wanna screw you assholes..stop blaming GOD for your sinful lifestyle.

  29. 129

Re: FREE*SPEECH*MY*@$$ – Keep your stupid superstitious bullshit to yourself! This is a GOSSIP site run by a gay man, it is NOT your free speech forum asshole! Pull the bible out of your ass so the shit drains from your head!

  30. 130

Re: Lydia08 – Well…Thats what happens when you chose to do whats WRONG. You will suffer the wrath of people who dont believe in that way of life. If youre going to live against whats right in Gods eyes..you better be prepared for the fight of your life from people who are against you!

  31. 131

What? She's not married to Krazee-Eyez Killa? Damn…..

  32. 132

We all knew Wanda was one of the girls, but I am so proud of her for taking a stand when we needed courage and leadership. Wanda will certainly become a leader of the struggle for equal rights under the law. We are proud of you, Wanda!

  33. 133

OMG! YAY!! I'M SOOOO HAPPY THAT SHE CAME OUT AS A PROUD GAY AMERICAN!

I LOVE WANDA, SHE IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE COMEDIANS EVER! EVERYTIME I WATCH HER I ALWAAAAAAYYYYS LAUGH, SHE HAS YET TO DISSAPOINT!

I NEVER KNEW SHE WAS A LESBIAN, SHE HIDES IT WELL, HEHE!

I LOVE WANDA! I WISH MORE PEOPLE WOULD COME OUT OF THE CLOSET AND STAND UP FOR GAY RIGHTS ONCE AND FOR ALL!

SO MANY CLOSET CASES KEEPING US FROM PROGRESS

  34. 134

    YAY WANDA! I LOVE YOU!!!

WE NEED MORE PEOPLE LIKE WANDA WHO ARE NOT AFRAID OF BEING THEMSELVES!!!

WE NEED TO PROGRESS ALREADY, IT'S TIME! :-)

  35. 135

    Re: greasyguide

i agree thoroughly with you. it's sad that they are trying to pin the black community as the biggest supporters of Prop H8te, they are not. Blame it on the Mormons, they started this, and they will finish it if more don't get involved to fight their ignorance. As someone who has suffered because of Mormon ignorance and bigotry first hand, I can only hope that the LGBT community continue to organize as effectively as they did Saturday, and that their supporters continue to support them. That is the only way we will beat out this archaeic, digusting sect of society.

  36. 136

Re: gotmilk? – Guess YOU didn't get the memo-god is a load of phony bullshit that fools like you trail behind sniffing like a dog's ass! I do get a good laugh though, reading this site and finding the holy-than-thous who get their jollies using a gay blog to proselytize their own brand of imagination!

  37. 137

I'm not buying that 70% black vote thing. Maybe someone should demand another vote . I heard them on the view saying that percentage was wrong. The last I checked , there weren't that many BLACK MORMONS.

  38. 138

Re: Xelia Kay – That's the point. "having been in the position themselves." Perez is quoting old misleading data. The Black vote was not 70%. He needs to make up his mind. Is it the Blacks, or the Mormons. How many Black Mormons have you seen? Black Mormon itself is an oxymoron. Come on . In UTAH? (I know not all Mormons are there)

  39. 139

Re: greasyguide – Thank you . He's trying to blame Blacks. He needs to understand the data and the facts before he post the numbers as if it were 70% of all voters instead of the 6% or so of all voters it actually was.

  40. 140

What's so funny ’bout peace, love, and understanding?

  41. 141

Re: NWKoftheWKs – This is the most intelligent thing I've read on this site all day.

  42. 142

    uhh is anyone surprised???

  43. 143

MC Lyte, it's time for her to come out of the closet. If she already hasn't. I do not read the "Source" anymore.

  44. chuck says – reply to this

    144

I don't care if she is a slit licker. She is funny.

  45. 145

Re: MarleyRai – That's an excellent point, MarleyRai. Prop 8 WAS framed as a spiritual/religious matter and I think the anti-8 set could have done more to stress to everyone, especially outside the usual spectrum of supporters that it had much more to do with civil rights. Perhaps the reason you did not see a lot of that is because there have been a lot of outspoken African American religious leaders criticizing the gays for comparing their struggle to the Civil Rights Movement - a bit of a bullshit guilt-trip (they'll say anything to keep their whipping children) but I believe things like that kinda shamed a lot of gay rights supporters into backing away from that comparison. I think it would do a lot of good to see people of color that are gay get some face time, really get the message out there and help it hit home. We're slowly but surely stamping out racism but there's still a lot of people that don't want to hear some white homo comparing his struggle to theirs.

  46. 146

Re: mcbullhead – You're so stupid, lol. Did you even watch the video? Did you not HEAR her talking about being a lesbian?

I could go on all day about what a dipshit you are, but I just had a relaxing cup of chamomile tea and don't wanna lose my happy energies.

  47. 147

Re: crotchrocket – LOL - we're not nice. We're just acting the sensitive bit to get you naked.

    I'm playin of course … kinda ;)

  48. 148

Re: hissycat – You don't "KNOW" anything. You have an opinion. That's all. An apparently uninformed one, which is even more the pity. Saying you aren't a Christian doesn't excuse your indifference, because not all Christians believe that the bible honestly preaches against monogamous same-sex couples. Stop lumping everyone into the same omelet.

  49. 149

Re: hjk – The fight for equality is the same all across the boards whether it's women or blacks or gays or Hispanic immigrants or Asians or … anyone. People say you can't compare them simply because you can hide being gay while you can't hide the color of your skin. I guarantee you that if every person ever born gay was also born with a missing left pinky finger, people with missing left pinky fingers would have been unable to vote, lol. As for gays not getting lynched, I dare to compare being strung on a barbed-wire fence and left to die. One case in a billion? No. Just one case that got a lot of coverage. Attacks on homosexuals are a daily occurrence. And if you think we don't get segregated, you should walk a mile in my heels and try joining a gym with your girlfriend only to be told that you aren't allowed to use the women's dressing areas, as if we were going to molest the poor straight patrons and can't conduct ourselves in an appropriate manner. Because of the Civil Rights movement paving the way, it's not as "in your face" as it was then, but I bet the average citizen didn't get news of every maltreatment blacks received at the hands of bigots back in the 60's, either. I don't think it belittles what blacks went through at all. It's an honest comparison of simple human dignities not being bestowed to those who are still expected to pay their taxes and fight in our country's wars.

  50. 150

Re: kikilisa – LOL - yeah because if we're allowed to get married it'll immediately make you a big screaming leather daddy dyke. You'll see two women walk out of a courthouse in wedding dresses and you'll have this crazy twitching sensation run up your arm into your brain and all of a sudden you'll throw down your snow cone and run face first into the nearest muff. It'll happen to everyone! EVERYONE! MWAHAHAHAHAHAAA! No more children will ever be made and the world will end! Kaboooooom!

    You dumbass. ROFL.

  51. 151

Re: kikilisa – "Now I'm so glad prop 8 didn't pass." Ehh … are you sure you know what this conversation is about? RoFL. I can just see your stupid ass in a voting booth sayin "Screw them Homos! No on 8! Ha!"

  52. 152

Re: Lydia08 – Heee … I snorted when I read that. I'm gonna use it - copyright props to you, of course.

  53. 153

Re: redred1 – I've got relatives who are Mormons … used to go to the Mormon church as a kid … you're right. Never saw any black people. The only thing that should be done with the knowledge of these statistics is to better arm ourselves to try and bridge into that ethnic group/community. People are using em for all the wrong things. And as a former member of the LDS I would like to offer a new slogan for their consideration -

The Mormons - Disregard that second "M!"

  54. 154

    Re: Slackness

    I like your avatar…;)

  55. 155

I am gay and I have always loved Wanda, but now I love her even more for helping in this fight. My mate and I have been living together for what will be 19 yr. in june of 2009. And we feel married already. So no one can take our feelings away from us.

  56. 156

Re: amyanderson – You are soooooooo dim and sheltered in your little life……i feel bad for you

get your tubes tied…please…..for all of our sakes

  57. 157

i find this to be the equivalent to any other great speech ever given. this is exactly things i have said to my mother in the past few days. thank you.

  58. 158

    Wanda's awesome =)
Being black I don't understand how any african american can discriminate aganist another minority group.
but gay marriage will be legal soon , I know it , the fight isn't over!

  59. 159

She praises Obama, but HELLOOOOOOO–He's AGAINST gay marriage!!

  60. 160

    Re: poshbabygiaRe: gotmilk?
    posh–SNAPS TO THAT!!
milkdud–we should say the same about people such as yourself who disagree with what YOU believe.

  61. 161

Now who couldn't figure out she was a lesbian?

  62. 162

YOU'RE KIDDING RIGHT?? Beliefs are beliefs, no stupid celebrity will change my mind.

  63. 163

I had no idea, I think Wanda is very funny. God bless her for comming out when she wanted. Not by Perez talking shit about others in Hollywood. Perez let people come out when they are ready, Ur out good for u. Some people are not ready yet. Give them time.
