It looks like all of the other damn characters he played….Willie Wonka, Edward Sissorhands, Sweeny Todd, it's getting a little old…I think Burton should attempt to cast someone else for a role.
you people all about Disney are idiots. You DO REALIZE Alice was written like a hundred plus years ago and had NOTHING to do with Disney. There was a totally different REAL wacky tale way before it got pinnafored DISNEY-IZED. In essence Disney KILLED the twist reality of Wonderland and made it for kids when it is a wise, intriguing, complex story.

If this really is Johnny, I would not be surprised.
He is an amazing actor who takes on every one of his roles so completely, creatively and uniquely that i am sure he would be able to pull off something as cool and slightly creepy as this version of the mad hatter. And i use the word creepy in the best possible way.

everybody who keeps saying that he always looks the same, i don't really get. i mean there are some similarities, like when he is with burton he often goes with the pale skin and sickly looking eyes, but other than that, the hair, the clothes, the accents, the character, are all different. i think people think that if it is eccentric (which johnny often plays…well) that it is the same…but your forgetting that he also does play not-goth looking characters as well, i mean public enemies, secret window, libertine, finding neverland…none of those were even close to this…
look at brad pitt, or tom cruise, or will smith…they barely even change their hairstyle for a movie! they always look the same!
also, keep in mind that yeah, there are going to be similarities in the characters an actor is playing…possibly due to the fact that you can't change your physical bone structure! yeah, johnny always has really chiseled cheekbones and deep-set eyes, cuz thats what he looks like.

I don't know how I feel about this. In all honesty Alice and Wonderland is a pretty dark story that Disney took and glorified (like MANY others) So maybe Burton's interpretation won't be so bad? On the other hand, I just wish he'd make his OWN movies, from his own or someone else's original script not based on an old story. It's getting old, and I know he has it in him to produce something truly 100% unique.
to add: to get the horrible disney version of Alice In Wonderland out of your brainwashed heads, rent the 1985 version, "Alice Through the Looking Glass." It was a made for tv movie, and stands as my all time favorite version of the story.

Tim Burton isn't screwing up a classic. Disney screwed it up. The Mad Hatter is supposed to be MAD. He has Mercury poisoning, therefore he's fucked in the head, wears eccentric clothing and is completely loopy. I think this is a perfect rendition of the Mad Hatter.
