The Twilight Effect
Filed under: Film Flickers > Media Minute > Twilight
Although Twilight has gotten some mixed reviews, that hasn't stopped people from speculating about its success - and the books too.
Publishing insiders are already saying that Stephenie Meyers' Twilight series will make it big, maybe even outperforming the Harry Potter series. Especially now with the movie out!
Elizabeth Eulberg, publicist for the Twilight books, said "I think it will definitely bring a bigger audience. We just hope the people who haven't read the books who see the movie will read them."
She adds that sales have risen in the past few weeks with worldwide sales of the four books in the series reaching 25 million. The books are also printed in 37 languages!
Eulberg added that "For the past three years we've been steadily getting more fans, so when 'Breaking Dawn' came out [in August] it sold 1.3 million copies on the first day in the U.S."
As for the book's author, Meyer claims the idea came to her in a dream back in 2003. Just six months later she had written Twilight and signed a six-figure deal.
Wonder how much of that money she's donated to her Mormon church and to the Yes on Prop H8te to promote lies????????????
But despite the books selling well, the flick is still not doing so well with the reviews.
Time Magazine added that while Twilight was not a masterpiece, it "rekindles the warmth of great Hollywood romances."
Will U be watching Twilight?

Re: dreamsforcali – Not really, I read the book, hated it. Same with a hell of alot of other people.
I just finished reading Breaking Dawn today. It was my least favorite of the 4 books. I'll most likely wait until Twilight comes out on DVD to watch it. I read an article earlier that said Twilight would be bigger than Harry Potter because the audience is more diverse. We'll see how that plays out.
While reading the Twilight series I couldn't help but compare it to Harry Potter. I think Stephenie Meyer is brilliant and very creative, but I think JK Rowling is much more so. It's hard to compare the series because they're so different, but I have to say I loved reading Harry Potter much more. The stories were wonderfully written and I think JK Rowling is a genius. Stephenie Meyer is very talented, but she's not a genius. Just my opinion. Have fun seeing Twilight this weekend! Rob Pattinson is pretty easy on the eyes.
He's ugly as shit!! He looks drugged.
I have NOT read the books, but I wanted to see the movie. I'm not a reader… but I enjoy being entertained. The movie entertained me. I thought it was awesome!! The first 20 minutes are slow, because they are building the story up for us. Robert P. was great - he was intense and I felt his love for her. It was def. a good movie to watch. Glad I went, BTW, I'm a 37 yr old mom.
not hot! well maybe in the movie. looking forward to see it.
Re: redsonja1313 –
HAha I loved this I was laughing so hard I was beginning to sound like kitty from that 70's show
Re: stoosharp – I totally agree with you! I felt incredibly disappointed after seeing the review on Rottentomatoes, but what you said was right! They're a bunch of old farts that don't appreciate such movies!
And WOAH, I love Rob Pattinson and all, but sometimes…he can look so UNATTRACTIVE! I mean, I've always found him gorgeous (look at my AVATAR!) But when his hair looks greasy and flat, he sometimes looks like a druggie! ):
He could look so beautiful all the time if he really wanted to.
i did see twilight and it was FUCKING AMAZING!
Re: FUCK_OBAMA – hey….dont put that fugly shit on the gay community….he's all yours…..
groooossssss!
Re: redsonja1313 – Thank You….i have been preaching that for weeks….
it wants to be buffy soooooo bad…..but it will never be!!!!!
Buffy Rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please perez please
do not taint Stephanie Meyers name because of her beliefs.
How dare you go against someone just because of their beliefs. Learn to accept others just like they are trying to accept others. I supported no on prop 8 but now that it has been overruled by majority rule i think it is time to leave it in the past. Change cannot happen so radically no matter what you try. I believe in democracy as being a great thing of our country where our voice is not silenced. You no longer take into consideration the fact that many people are fans of both you and stephanie meyer. This is a new low. I was really hoping that this would not happen. I had a feeling that something like this would be written by you about stephanie meyer and now that it has I can no longer support your stand in fighting prop 8. You have changed a person who has been a supported of the no side to the neutral. I no longer care. A right for a right is not a good deal. Do not silence people or try to force your beliefs down their throats. This is exactly the kind of behavior that equality communties condemn. The day you present yourself as matured and are able to take both sides into consideration is the day I will be able to see you for a fighter of equality instead of a biased being forcing their beliefs upon others.
This guy is definitely NOT HOT. More like the douchbag guy who lives down the street that is either a child molester or serial killer. God he is fucking ugly with a side of creepy. EW
Ok i know no one cares and no one may read this but I must vent….ok the movie was completely, poorly done. Edward was not a winey bitch who cried to bella in every moment of the book. I dont blame the actors, i blame the writers and Ms.Stephanie Meyers who did not respect her book, and wait long enough to make a great film, not just a whatever film. Harry Potter has NOTHING to stress, cuz this movie may make money but it's no phenomenon like Harry Potter, cuz J.K Rowling took the time to make sure her shit was good lol and on a second note I read ALL THE BOOKS, no one can say I did not indulge myself in these novels and I cried at the end of Breaking Dawn and everything, BUT i dont squeal and cry when I see edward on the screen like the 200 other girls did…really obnoxious and immature so please if u see it DONT SCREAM through out the movie. It just bothers the rest of us who are actually watching the film…. So all in all MOVIE SUCKS, BOOKS ARE AWESOME AND ARE EXTREMELY CREATIVE AND ENJOYABLE. Thank you for your time..
Anyone who compares this atrociously overrated series to Harry Potter is on crack. Rowling OWNED her characters, the plot and the entire series; she deserves the shitload of money she is sitting on. As for Meyer, she is fortunate that bored, hormonal women and girls will find her work entertaining. On the whole, the Twilight series sucks ass with its endless plot holes, dull and one-dimensional characters and anti-climactic finale. There is only one reason it is successful, and his name is Edward. Nothing more.
As for the movie, I like Rob Pattinson (and his anti-Zac Efron-ness) and I want him to do well, so I hope he does a good job with Edward. Kristen Stewart can dive on a spike for all I care, the bitch has her over-long jaw and nose in the air in every fucking interview I've seen her. I only wish they gave more publicity to those who can actually do interviews, i.e., Nikki Reed, Cam Gigandet, Rochelle LaWhateverherlastnameis, and so on.
Will I be seeing Twilight?
No. I have a BRAIN. Twilight is the most pathetic thing ever. It's only fans are little teenage girls that are dumber then a post and obviously haven't read anything that could be described as decent by any means. Get a life, you Twi-tards. -_-
Over-rated for no good reason. I write better in my sleep. What has happened to this generation? First someone as talentless as Slutty Cyrus becomes famous and now Twilight? PATHETIC.
Fuck the reviews. Opinions are subjective.
It is stupid to think this poorly written divel would in any way touch the sales figures of Harry Potter.
Oh My Jollyranchers! He is Soooo hotttttttt i wouldve loved to play Bella!
Oh My Jollyranchers! THIS GUY IS AMAHZING! I ABSOLUTELY LUV HIM!
I went into the theater with mixed view points on what the movie would be like. Let me tell you this, it turned out to be the most incredible experience! I was not expecting it to be so good. I actually went with about 14 friends, some had not even read the books and they loved it as well. Some of the elderly critics said that the effects were not that great so I was expecting them to be corny…they weren't at all. They also said the meadow scene was lacking, but I thought it was absolutely amazing! I watched in astonishment as my favorite book was brought to life on the big screen and the only thing I want is more!! The acting was incredible…you could actually feel Edwards torment in Rob's emotions. Kristen was a fantastic Bella, perfect in every way. I feel so lucky to have been able to see this movie and I will see it over and over again! Twilight has become a household name and this movie just reinforces all the hype!!!
Re: manderhooven –
Agreed.
i loved twilight and robert ois amazing having haters only makes him more famous!!! hes an amazing actor!!!!! and about the reviews those are the peoples jobs to critize good movie!
I LOVED the movie and plan on going to see it again soon. Robert Pattinson is wonderful in it.
Re: Superbad13 – I completely agree with every single word you said. Kristen Stewart did not impress me at all! Robert had said she was the best actress of this generation. That is kind of sad that SHE would be, in anyone's opinion, a best actress. I cringed during the hospital bed scene when she was stuttering. After her lines, people turned to eachother in the theater and was like "WTF?!?" I really tried to like her in the movie, but I just couldn't..she didn't possess enough talent for me to take her seriously. She was pretty awkward, and it seems she acts the same in all her movies. It was agonizing.
hell yeah i'm gonna watch twilight again!!
oh and all you fuckers out there who don't like twilight, go to hell!
No, I won't be seeing this movie, or any of the future Twilight movies. I might be biased because I read the first book and thought it was CRAP, but still. I don't think it's worth watching.
also agree the extra scenes and changes actually made the movie more entertaining , i read the book and in my opinion they followed it perfectly . rob and kristen did an amazing job they portrayed edward and bella iin agreat way and rocked it i really loved the movie, you gotta keep in mind that movies and books are totaly different the movie is made to entertain the eyes , books are made to inspire and to open up the imagination of the reader SO THE MOVIE ADAPTATION OF TWILIGHT ROCKED THATS MY OPINION AND IN STICKING TO IT
you are all so mean! okay he is a real person! and he is absolutely gorgeous. dont diss just because of one picture. and his acting in the movie was amazzing!
yes , i will watch twilight again , and again , like the loser i really am .
I don't see it, why do people think he's hot?!? He looks weird to me. Even if his dick was big and scrumptious (which I doubt) he's not not appealing to me whatsoever.
Personally, I think he looks like a huge douche.
Re: dreamsforcali – You call 37 million dollars low budget??
ok first of all to whoever was talking shit about the budget being 37 million…the budget for the FIRST harry potter was 125 million so yes think about THAT difference all movies no matter what cost millions of dollars and today 37 mill is not a lot….second of all the movie is obviously a disappointment from the book because the book is amazing. i am not a teenage i am in my 20s and i still love the books so they are not just for teeny boppers like you guys are all saying the books are amazing and it is hard to live up to that in a movie but the movie was decent and the second will only be better
and personally i think you look like a huge douche
JUST got back. It was amazing!! Much funnier than I thought it was going to be! I expected it to be super dramatic, but there were a lot of one-liners that killed me!!
loves it!!
the movie blew. the best part was the HARRY POTTER trailer prior to the feature film.
i highly doubt the twilight series will ever even compare to the HP franchise, considering HP has already been around for a decade. so sorry twilighters.
but robpatt is hot….then again, where did he get his start? plus, he's so much sexier with his accent.
I'm seeing it today!
Jeeez, beat Harry Potter?! No WAY. Twilight appeals to middle age depressed mums and pre teens. That is it. The books sucked, and people need to realise that Meyer has pretty much just fluked a living off a wet dream she happened to write down one day.
Re: makanani – Are you serious? Were you awake during the entire movie!!!??? I have read all the books and movie Edward did not do Book Edward justice and not liking this movie does not make someone passionless. There is FAR FAR FAR more passion in the books than the movie! In the book Edward was tortured but in the movie he looked like he was more terrified than tortured! I think this movie was far too rushed, that it jumped around a bunch and that the directing was awful! They left out and changed things they shouldn't have! Their budget was definitly not high enough, my god did they buy Jacob's wig at a dollar store!!??? I am in love with the Edward and Bella love story and every single one of the books but I think they could have done a much better job on this movie! I'm thinking if they make the other 3 they will be a lot better, hopefully they will learn from the mistakes in this movie. Also have to say that i LOVED Charlie in this movie!
Oh and it was unintentionally funny in some parts…not a good thing when the theatre's laughing at something that was supposed to be serious in the book!
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVED THE MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!!! I REALLY THINK YOU HAVE TO READ THE BOOKS TO APPRECIATE THE CHARACTERS AND THE FILM. I THOUGHT IT WAS LOVELY.
CAN'T WAIT FOR THE NEXT 3.
ok I saw this movie yesterday….and i'm highly dissapointed, the quality of the film and the acting was like a 'Sci-fi Channel Original' movie. They really could have spent a loooooot more money on this film, for the next one they better spend more dough!!!
wow he looks H-O-R-R-I-B-L-E in that pic!
I loved the movie. People have to remember it IS a teen flick about a vampire. Maybe over the top romantic but take it for what its worth. I loved it, again, and I will watch it over agian. Robert pattinson and that taylor guy rar…damn I love boys.
The actual story is pretty good, but the writing is horrible as far as the books go. At least Rowling knows how to write. As for the movie, the same. The story is very heartwarming. It's too bad the movie was so low budget. It was much more entertaining listening to the pre teens screaming and going crazy. The girl who plays Bella is kind of getting a bum wrap. I understand how she was trying to play the part. Bella is very unsure of herself, clumsy etc. She is "different". I saw her in some movie with Meg Ryan a while ago and she is a really good actress. I think the movie is worth seeing but wish they would have spent more money making it. Maybe if it does well they will have a bigger budget for the next one. I don't think it will come close to making as much as Harry Potter. There is no comparison between the two movies. Potter movies and books are much better and the demographic's for Twilight are too small. It was all 10-16 year old females at the movie. A few moms and 5 guys with girlfriends. Not a wide range of fans.
LOVE TWILIGHT SAGA!!!!
Stephenie is incredible!!!
the books are the best!!
oh jesus christ perez. i have been reading your page for years. it is just a big pile of shit now. i just get more and more annoyed every time i read it.
stop it with the mormon bullshit. why does this belong in a column about Twilight. Get your fucking personal agenda out of here. No one fucking cares.
Good riddance. I am in search of a better gossip site. Yours SUCK ASS.
no no no it is an awful movie, completely ruined the books (though they were not FABULOUS to begin with. read any jodi picoult book and you will completely forget about twilight) it will ever overshadow harry potter. you WAIT and see what will happen when it comes out in july
ewwwww he is creepy
Re: ilovephilton – Very true…Jodi Picoult is what I call a "real" author. She's excellent.
Are you fucking kidding me Perez?
Breaking Dawn sold 1.3 million in its first day of release in the US. Um, didn't Deathly Hallows sell 8.3 million on its first day in the US? Check your facts.
And a bigger audience? Now that's a joke. Last time I checked, an audience of people ranging from the ages of 9 to 69 (both male and female) is MUCH larger than that of girls between 12 and 18.
Do you even bother to look at the numbers before running your mouth? Clearly not.
For the record:
I'm a HP fan and a Twilight fan.
But you're a dumbass if you think Meyer's work even touches the ground Rowling is on. Twilight will be forgotten in years time. After the last of the movies [because those idiots at Summit now have the rights to the rest of the series] the books themselves will fade in popularity. People will stop caring about them. There's nothing meaningful throughout the entire series to keep it alive and loved through time.
Potter, on the other hand, is alive and well after ten years. And guess what? It will continue to be. It's a classic; up there with Frodo and Narnia. It has themes and universal appeal. And and MUCH larger fandom base.
Now get this shit out of here and acknowledge your ignorance, fool.
Re: HottStuff – Alright go fuck yourself…I am not a 15 year old with no brain and I LOVED every book in the Twilight series! Anyone I know who has read them, loved them and we range from 19-30 and are almost all university educated…
Yes the writing may not be the best ever but it's a beautiful unique love story and I've read tonnes of books, 15 just this summer and they are not all Chick Lit books either but range from Wuthering Heights to Night to Cormac McCarthy's The Road.
So HottStuff…take your own damn advice and get a life
Love Always,
A 20 year old with a 3.7 GPA, a life thank you very much and a great love for the romance of Edward and Bella in the Twilight BOOKS!
He is so fucking hot!
But, I wont see Twilight.
Harry Potter forever!
Hey fuck ass Perez! why didn't you donate any money to your cause? There is alot of big time celebs in California who are pro gay marriage and they did not pitch a dime to this cause. put your money where your mouth is hater.
Meh, I just got back from the movie. I loved the movie, you just can't really compare it to the book if you plan on enjoying it (which is what I was doing in the first 30 minutes or so, and I found myself disappointed). I wasn't really happy when they chose Catherine Hardwicke as a director to begin with, don't get me wrong, she looks like an awesome woman but I've never been a fan of her movies. They're too choppy and slow, and she seems to put Nikki Reed (Rosalie) in every one of them. I wish they would've developed the characters more, and she really needed to stick to the book more as far as their personallities go (for example, Angela was supposed to be timid, and Mike was supposed to follow Bella around like a dog, and Jessica was supposed to be more annoying/jealous), and I loved Rob but Edward was supposed to speak like a gentleman and it was supposed to be obvious. He didn't seem to speak much different than Bella did. It's like Catherine assumed EVERYONE who was going to see the movie had read the books (I went with my mom, who hasn't read them yet and she enjoyed it but got a bit lost).
I really hope they find a new director for the next one- or they need to put a LOT more money into it and Catherine really needs to explain everything she left out in the first one. What I don't understand is why she had to change the scenes so much, for example- I didn't like how Bella met Jacob in the movie.. I guess she needs to understand that the fans supporting these movies are DIEHARD fans of the book and they really want to see the complete book come to life the way they imagined. The next movie needs to be a lot longer aswell. But, overall, I really liked the movie and I'll be seeing it again.
robert pattinson is NOT ATTRACTIVE he looks like he has downs syndrome
Re: cullencrazy – Ha I'm glad someone agrees with me. And yeah that hospital scene…whoa. And the scene when they are in the woods and she's telling him what she thinks he is, I read that the only reason the camera is swirling around them so much is BECAUSE she lacks emotional range and due to her ability to only show the emotions "blank and blanker" that's why they do so many close ups on her, to make the scene more intense because she can't. It's good to know that you would agree that maybe a casting session should be held for a new bella for the next movies. Baseball scene was badass, no? and Rosalie and emett…no the cullens were so great i loved them. Charlie and jacob were good too. I'm interested to see how Taylor lautner does in the next one.
oh shut up perez. just because she is mormon doesn't mean shes for prop 8. You are worse than the people that you make fun of. GROW UP PEREZ. please.
ha ha ha
