Michelle Williams Opens Up About Heath and the Paparazzi
Filed under: Heath Ledger > Sad Sad > Michelle Williams
Michelle Williams sat down with Newsweek as part of the promo blitz for her new movie, Wendy and Lucy, and boy does the interview tug at your heartstrings.
The interviewer was able to get Michelle to talk about Heath Ledger's death:
Williams is jovial and chatty, until the conversation turns to Heath. You can see it's still difficult for her to talk about him, and she hasn't done so publicly until now. The first time Ledger's name comes up, she bursts into tears. "It's so sad," Williams says. When she's asked about how she's been doing in the past year, she's silent for a very long time. "I guess it's always changing," she says. There's another pause. "What else can I say?" Her voice is breathy and fragile, and she takes a few gulps of air. "I just wake up each day in a slightly different place—grief is like a moving river, so that's what I mean by 'it's always changing'." She stops again. "It's a strange thing to say"—her words unravel slowly, her eyes tear up—"because I'm at heart an optimistic person, but I would say in some ways it just gets worse. It's just that the more time that passes, the more you miss someone. In some ways it gets worse. That's what I would say."
And, her thoughts on the paprazzi:
"It burns a fire inside of me, the s––– that I've seen people do to get at me or my daughter," she says. "I won't forget it, and I won't support it. I don't want my daughter growing up feeling spied on or threatened." She can't understand how many more pictures people need of her holding a coffee cup in one hand and Matilda in the other. Williams is especially enraged at female photographers, because she thinks women should be protective of mothers. She tried to give a particularly aggressive paparazzo career advice recently. "I said, 'You're better than this. Look at you! You're young, you're able-bodied, you have a brightness in your eyes. You're above this.' But you know what? She didn't go away."
Michelle goes on to say she'll seriously consider quitting acting, if that's what it takes to get her life back, "If it gets to the point where I can't situate my life in a way that they stay away more, then I'll drop a match on the thing. I'll be sad. I like to act. It's saved my life over and over again. It's given me a sense of self-esteem, self-worth. I have this thing that I'm in love with—acting—and now it has this baggage."
She reveals that she's definitely taking the next year off to focus on being mommy to Matilda.
Let's all leave them alone!

I agree Perez! They should leave her alone… she needs some time for herself and the paps are making things worst for her!
she is such a strong person..
Perez Hates Me ^^
Aw, she sounds so amazing and down to earth. She sounds like a great mother.
Unless you've been there, you can't imagine the toll grief takes on a human being. When I lost my mother, the whole world stopped. I can't imagine what it must be like for Michelle Williams or Jennifer Hudson, with the paps watching your every move… while you suffer.
I hope the word gets out to let these people suffer privately. Please remember.. these are human beings.
Good for her! I'm glad she's finally speaking out, hopefully people will get the message. If not, maybe retiring or going on haitus is the best choice for the sake of her daughter.
Re: alexlala – Wow Im sorry about your mother. Losing your mom is worse than losing your EX-husband that's for sure. Either way I love Michelle, you can tell she is in it really for the acting and not for the fame like Lohan and other crappy actresses. Leave her alone.
That's rich. Perez says, "Let's leave them alone." Like this site doesn't feed the paparazzi frenzy Williams is talking about. At the root of the paparazzi evil are sites like these that feed off those pictures. Otherwise they wouldn't exist.
I'm a huge fan of Michelle. And this is why. She is so down to earth. I'm so proud to call myself a Michelle Williams fan.
Her daughter Matilda is such a beautiful girl who looks just like her mom and dad. I hope they both get the peace they want. They deserve it.
I really hope Michelle doesn't quit acting, because she is so talented. But if that is what she has to do i support her. : )
Lene, 17 from Norway. xoxo .
Back off, motherpappos!
I respect her so much and i am really saddened about heath's death.
What i love though is that the family gave all the money to the child.
you wouldnt catch mrs lohan and mrs spears doing that !!!
Re: alexlala – I agree with you 100%.. so sorry about your mother.
If this ain't a hoot. Peerez claiming to have a heart. My guess is he is right now chewing out who ever wrote this.
By the way sperm-gurgler why you kissing up to Britney all of the sudden, get a call from her or your lawyers about your little piracy promotion did we????
I think she should definitely QUIT ACTING! If you can't stand the fire, get out of the fucking OVEN!
I'm so sick of seeing these movie stars complain. They have nothing to complain about! Yeah…Heath's death was HORRIBLE, but they need to get over the paparazi. Celebrities sign up to be a part of the Circus! Boo Hooh! poor Michelle and her million-dollar paychecks…and she's not that great of an actress to begin with. She looked like Miss Piggy on Dawson's Creek. I never understood her appeal.
she is so beautiful
this comes with the territory. keep your daughter out of the public if you don't want her picture taken.
Hilton you fucking hypocrite. You are as bad as the rest of the slimey paparazzi. Its amazing it takes death for you to back off you fat fuck.
Re: TylerDurden – I sure as FUCK would be upset if I lost the father of my child suddenly and tragically, and constantly had people following and taking my picture. She as no privacy to GRIEVE. I can't imagine losing someone I was so close with. I'm sure she realized she would be followed by paparazzi when she decided to start acting, but it's frustrating for her during this time because she's going through one of the most horrible experiences a person can go through in his or her life. She hasn't been left alone, and just wants some peace for a while so she can get herself and her daughter back together. You Insentive prick. Fuck.
Re: kcarab niessuh amabo – So Matilda should be locked in a dungeon for the rest of her life because people are obsessed with taking her picture? Not very fair if you ask me. I like to look at gossip websites, hence the reason I'm on here, but the some of the shit the paps do are fucking ridiculous. It's not Matilda's fault that her parents are famous. She shouldn't have to restrict her life just because those pathetic fuckfaces have NO respect for celebs when they ask that their pics not be taken. It's a simple request. Have some decency
Re: kcarab niessuh amabo –
That's some fucked up logic. The woman can't even go pump some gas into her car without a papparazzi orgy. She can't take her daughter out and show her the outside world without the paps having a field day. How would you like it if you had to just stay home all the time?
That's why God invented the ZOOM LENS. There's no need for them to crowd around the way they do.
I really feel Michelle's sadness, I hope she is able to find the space to grieve and be in peace with her child.
I think it should be totally illegal for the paprrazzi to take pictures of the minor children of celebrities without the parents' permission. Period. When I see how they stalk and harrass and shout and swarm on the little ones it is criminal behavior. We should all call or e-mail the city council in LA and NYC and raise hell about it. If the parents say it is OK that's their problem, but if they don't then these people should get heavy heavy fines and have their equipment taken away. Hit them where it hurts. I also think the paparrazzi should be licensed in the first place. There are too many now with criminal records for drugs and assault and they are going to the schools and following people to their houses. Ithink there should be places where they are not allowed, like schools, playgrounds and houses. Paparrazzi hang out by hotels, restaurants and shopping places. That should be enough.
Re: TylerDurden – there's a big difference in celebrities complaining about being famous and having their picture taken and what she said in this article. she doesn't pull an attitude here or say anything like "poor me for being famous". it isn't even about her, it's about protecting her daughter. most other celebrities have not been in this kind of situation, either, where an ex-fiance, father of their child, fellow celebrity dies suddenly and tragically during the filming of a HUGE movie, increasing the media coverage and paparazzi interest in them and their children. that is something that would understandably push someone to the point of speaking up about it.
LETS ALL LEAVE THEM ALONE??? THIS IS COMING FROM PEREZ???
Re: moonbeams – Thank you! Couldnt agree more! Children should be off limits, regardless of who theire parents are!
its just so sad that she can not grieve in peace or take her daughter out for a day. its so sad that Matilda will always have this frenzy around her. i just feel for her and her daughter. everyone should let them be.
I feel sorry for the girl :/ It has to be hard enough for this to happen to anyone without the paparazzi chasing them around like fucking animals.. I can't even imagine what she's going thru :/
Losing a person so suddenly and accidentally like that is such a shock. It's not fair that everyone is ganging up on her. Yes being an actress and being famous yeilds papparazzi, however, the paps should have restrictions and recognize that someone in grieving doesn't deserve the extra stress vs. someone who is out there flashing their genitalia or talking to them or going out to the night clubs. She's going out for coffee, letting her daughter breathe fresh air, and trying to fucking survive every day with the pain of a loved ones death.
Those bloodsucking papparazzi should fuck off!
She's Beautiful!
It is impossible for a man who runs a celebrity gossip website to knock paparazzi for being nosy without said man sounding like a complete hypocrite.
Re: kcarab niessuh amabo –
what? so you suggest that her daughter should stay inside all her life
Hypocritical DOUCHBAG Pigez! You pay for every one of those pics (or should) and support this media circus. Don't see you in a NON-SUPPORTIVE role toward the Paps anytime soon…
I miss Heath so much.
the sad thing is its websites like this that give the paparazzi a career. and we are all supporting it by visiting this site.
That is so sad
I hope she is finally given some peace.
"Let's all leave them alone"?? You help create the problem! If you want to leave them alone, stop posting paparazzi pictures.
Let's see if you follow your own advice.
Doubt it.
yes, leave them alone by posting entries like this. moron.
Re: Jacquie –
EXACTLY.
Her naked pain just made me cry. Bless her and her daughter; I hope she finds solace soon.
Shame she didn't concentrate on being a wife to Heath, he might still be with us if she had.
Those pricks should let them be. I hate hearing that they have to go through more crap than they already have.
Poor Michelle. I agree with Perez - leave her and Matilda alone!
Re: kitty9 – what a terrible thing to say. don't you know she probably already feels incredible amounts of guilt, even though she had no control over what happened. they were never married, he was her EX-fiance for a while before he passed, yet somehow you think SHE is the one who had control? she is the one who needed to save him? it was an accident, and accidents happen no matter what people around you do.
awwwwww
Stay strong, Michelle. That female papper you spoke about may yet take your words to heart. Your Brooklyn neighbors are not the culprits, they embraced your family. You are a talented artist and we'd like to see you keep working. The frenzy will die down. You and Matilda will be fine if you stay focused.
Where the paps are concerned, she wants to have her cake and eat it too. First, she says it has become too much and a moment later she says she'll quit acting if it becomes unbearable. Anyone who believes this woman is about to give up the million dollar paychecks for her daughter, think again.
Re:what a terrible thing to say. don't you know she probably already feels incredible amounts of guilt, even though she had no control over what happened. they were never married, he was her EX-fiance for a while before he passed, yet somehow you think SHE is the one who had control? she is the one who needed to save him? it was an accident, and accidents happen no matter what people around you do.
*****
Well, she did leave him. She knew he had an illness and instead of staying with him to help him work it out, she walked. I'm not saying it was her fault, but to now say that she misses him terribly is a bit ironic. She knew he had the problem.
Re: kcarab niessuh amabo –
Spoken like a true idiot.
You cant hide kids away like property.
ugly step sister- she walked? he was the one who could not stay committed.
for fucks sake get your facts straight! she has talked all praising of the man….i am sure she could have said much more from the darkside of the guy…
anybody see her talking to david poland a week ago? it is in google video. damn she is fine.
when katie holmes is turning uglier every second michelle is looking more beautiful than ever. she is very emotional it seems. the article we are commenting on is suggesting she is in great deal of pain still- but in the video she looks so happy and relaxed- but then again she is talking work there. so i guess if you want to stay happy- don`t quit!
She's so right. I wouldn't be able to deal with that everyday, people taking pictures of me and my daughter just doing normal things like getting a cup of coffee. It's pathetic. I think there should be laws against that. I think the paparazzi go too far with the whole craze to get pictures of children. They used to leave the kids alone. If I were a protective mom like Michelle, it would seriously make me want to quit acting too.
i usually am annoyed with celebs complaining about the paps, but not when it's someone who obviously doesn't seek attention like michelle williams.
i think WE need to calm our fascination with celebrity kids and pregnancies, because that has stemmed into paps seeking out the celeb kids. totally unfair to these kids.
YOU DICK PEREZ! YOU PAID FOR THIS PIC, AND YOU'RE POSTING ABOUT HER…YET YOU HAVE THE BALLS TO SAY "LET'S ALL LEAVE THEM ALONE!"
.
.
TRYING TO ACT LIKE YOU GIVE A SHIT…WHAT A LAUGH!
Re: Brendalove –
well these so called stars do parade their children around.
she is grieving over a man that did not marry her when she became pregnant.
this man had 2 years to marry her and make her child legal.
i do feel bad for them but she bringing matilda out.
Re: Brendalove –
GOD did not invent the zoom lens. HUMANS did.
Re: kcarab niessuh amabo – I agree with you that she is bringing her daughter "out", as you said, when she does interviews. But, just walking down the street…she should be left alone. I'm just laughing at Perez trying to act like he cares!
Re: Prince Von AHole –
your the idiot.
if she doesn't want the kids' picture taken don't bring her out.
of course she is loving this. all these so called stars do.
i'm not saying hide the children, but this comes with the territory.
and even if she does quit acting the paps will still be following them around.
another publicity stunt. if she really wanted to quit acting she would have done this when her child was born.
all rt
Acting is a profession…and that is all it is. It's what 'regular' people do to make money…and to entertain us in the theatres or via DVD. I'm not going to follow my mailman and take pictures of him and his family through his living room window. It's unheard of…and I'm pretty sure it's called "invasion of privacy". Um…and it's illegal. So why is it that these people…who act for a living…have no rights to their own personal privacy?
And it bugs the crap out of me when people make assumptions that have to do with me personally…I can just imagine how upsetting it must be to have these people…who act for a living…their personal lives dissected on pure speculation, rumor and assumption. What's that saying about assuming? Figure it out.
she has my respect….and i hope she pulls thru it OK…..
she is amazing for dealing with all this the way she has…
Re: kcarab niessuh amabo –
You're kidding me, right? Don't bring her child out? Man, you are are one string short of a functioning kite.
leave her alone?
… you've posted about michelle numerous times since heath's death and if anything, you are as responsible as the photographer for exploiting her.
i guarantee this won't be the last post.
mondmelodie.blogspot.com
Ha ha Perez… you would be the first to post a papparazi photo out of everyone.
P, your part of the solution to this problem, stop posting picks of celebs with there kids. Be a leader, not a follower, if you stop the rest will too. Shame on you for having a "hottest tot" post.
Re: Anix69 –
first of all, said this comes with the territory. when heath was alive, no paps messed with them. the public somewhat new them. when scandals happen of course paps and fans are curious.
the child is having a normal life. she has everything money can buy.
she's not wanting for anything. explain to the little girl why the paps and fans
are curious and just move on.
things could be worse. so mov
reading that first part about heath seriously made me tear up… so sad
i love how people are here talking about how she makes million dollar paychecks and this is a publicity stunt. most of you didn't give two shits about michelle williams before brokeback mountain (which happened to be a hit, but it was a movie with a huge budget) and when she started dating heath. she had a life which most actress have. the people featured on this site are CELEBRITIES who get their name from acting and most of them do it for the fame, but they make up about 9% of the entertainment industry. just because paris wants to go out doesn't mean people like michelle should suffer.
Re: judgementalasses –
the only reason michelle wants to quit acting is to live off matilda's money. if heath's parents had not given
the child the money, then michelle would have to work. she probably has no other skills.
Perez, you can be quite hypocritical with what celebs to leave alone and what celebs to not . . . I agree that the paps she leave her alone in brooklyn, but you are hyper harsh on other celebs who want to stay out of the everyday glare of photographers. Get real. Jeez. Everyone deserves privacy, even if they live in LA.
Re: kcarab niessuh amabo –
yeah sure dumbass she needs his money. what a typical heath suckup talk.
At 16 won the Robbins Trading Company World Cup Championship of Futures Trading by turning $10,000 into $100,000. It is the second highest profit in the tournaments history.
and what a bull that she wants attention. that is why she is living in a farmhouse right now…paps storm those you know…
should really read the article not segments perez has taken out.
it is obvious directors really think highly of her, so i think it would be a loss for them if she quits. i think scorsese "shutter island" will be a huge hit. and maybe she gets nominated for "Wendy And Lucy" already next year too.
Until Matilda becomes a public figure in her own right, paps should back the hell off. I've no doubt that there are actors that use their children for positive press–they should be horse-thumped. Any actor, actress, singer, performer or entertainment personality of any sort should have the ability to walk down the street with their children and not be harrassed. The kiddos did not sign on for fame. My prayers and positive thoughts to you and yours Michelle.
She sounds like a great woman & mother. Too bad 99% of celebs aren't like her….a genuine class-act. I hope everyone leaves them alone & gives them some peace.
Perez, you ignorant piece of garbage…you beat britney down when she was mentally ill, and encouraged people to laugh about it. You have some nerve telling everyone to leave michelle alone, as you sit here blogging about her. Hypocrite. You must think your readers are as stupid as you are.
~..~
perez…you, i and everyone else here are all a part of it, don't you understand? You can't just write some silly line like, "Let's just leave them alone!" And then give thousands of dollars to a pap company next time they snap a juicy pic of her to put up on your site.
You are at fault for buying them and putting them up for viewing
Me and everyone else who views them - whether in magazines, videos, websites, etc., are at fault for giving them steam.
Don't act like you have her best interest at heart. You'd crucify her in a heartbeat if she did anything you didn't like. Give me a break.
P - You're a hypocrite… Jennifer Garner has asked papps to back off and you regularly feature pics of her and Violet, even when she is pregnant and you KNOW the papps are invading her space and privacy. Or what about Angelina, Madonna, Katie, Britney, etc… the list goes on. Your double standards are annoying and your blatant disregard for these people is transparent. You're not fooling anyone so just be straight up about it. You thrive on celebrity tragedy and without the lows, lies and headlines, you would be jobless.
Why do nice girls crave for bad boys?
I respect and admire the way Michelle Williams has handled herself and her daughter during this difficult time in their lives. She has been a role model for all of us on how to handle life with dignity.
oxymoron isnt it???leave her alone??erm why??yr a celeb blogger..you just blogged about her..shes newsworthy yes???she ditched heath when he needed her now shes boo-hoo hooing all the way to teh bank and more publicity tell ya what cancer as pr and death all tre chic pr stunts..leave her alone???what bullshit love!whay do you prey on just some and not all???please get yr ass outta yr own ego mario
she is such a beutiful and strong woman.
if celebrities were 'left alone' you'd be a nobody, Perez.
Maybe if gossip Mags/websites would stop buying the photos taken of her the paps might start leaving her alone
I think that its Good for her! I'm glad she's finally speaking out, hopefully people will get the message….
