Black Friday Turns Deadly at a New York Wal-Mart

Our thoughts go out to the family of Jdimytai Damour, the Wal-Mart employee who was TRAMPLED TO DEATH by early morning shoppers at a New York Wal-Mart.
The New York Times reports that at about 4:55 am on Friday, a crowd of more than 2,000 who had come out for holiday deals forced their way into the Valley Stream, NY store. The six or so workers manning the front could not hold the unruly crowd back. Witnesses said the doors shattered and 'the shrieking mob surged through in a blind rush for holiday bargains. and Jdimytai Damour was 'thrown back onto the black linoleum tiles and trampled in the stampede that streamed over and around him.'
The detective in charge of the investigation said the store lacked adequate security.
He also went on to call the scene “utter chaos” and said the “crowd was out of control" and that those who ran over the victim could face criminal charges.
“I’ve heard other people call this an accident, but it is not. Certainly it was a foreseeable act,” said the detective.
A witness told the media that shoppers behaved badly even as the store was being cleared AFTER the death, “When they were saying they had to leave, that an employee got killed, people were yelling, ‘I’ve been on line since yesterday morning. They kept shopping.”
Unbelievable.

Being Canadian, we don't have Black Friday, and I really don't get it. Is saving 10$ on a coffee maker worth someone's life? It's disgusting and the stores encourage this kind of behaviour with their opening at ridiculous hours and putting sales on at certain times encouraging people to all show up at the same time an act like animals. You people should be disgusted at how greedy and selfish you are. Some poor family is without a beloved family member cause you needed to shop. Disgusting!

If you look at the security video you'll see the crowd was made up of savages, not civilized people. Somebody should have gassed these animals.

My family decided not to go out on Black Friday after we heard about that. We were listening to the radio and the people who were trampling the poor man were shoving aside emergency workers who were trying to save his life. That is seriously sick.

I work at the mall where that Wal*Mart was located. That specific store is full of outrageous people, as well as in the mall itself.
Lots of people come from Queens to shop there, and there is usually a good amount of violence.
A couple of weeks ago, on my day off, two couples got into a fight because someone bumped into someone else. For whatever reason, it escalated, and one person started stabbing someone else. Then, the other person pulled out a gun.
I feel for the victim's family, and it's sad that Black Friday has turned into a day where crowds are uncontrollable.
The man went into cardiac arrest and died at 6:03 am, and couple of people got injured, including a pregnant lady.

Oh and it also said that an 8 month pregnant woman was hurt as well. She had to go to the emergency room, but they said the baby was fine. People were really out of control.
Part of the rudeness that is the hallmark of NYC and even Long Island. Valley Stream, once a fairly nice area years ago, has a lot of toughs there now. Lower class with that Wal-Mart mentality; yes, I know lotsa people shop there, when it's the only store in town. I wouldn't go near it because it's always a mob scene at LI Wal-Marts. Thoughts and prayers to that poor man's family. What a terrible way to go.

Its not always the people who do the tramplings fault. Its often people who are further back shoving them forwards that can't see whats going on at the front. I've been in some horrible crowd situations at rock fetivals where I've thought I would be crushed.

I'm from NJ, haven't lived there for about 8-9 years now, recently went back for a visit, could not believe how completely rude and utterly selfish people up there have become, this sad story turns my stomach but doesn't really shock me, people have turned into a lower form than animals, neanderthols, sub human species, I hope they can pinpoint some of those slobs on the security cams and prosecute them, but my sincere condolonces go out to that family
They should get rid of the whole Black Friday bullshit. Have the stores offer these prices throughout the day (or even the weekend) instead of these get it early gimmicks and everyone could still save and not have scenes like this one. The stores are almost at much at fault for these cheesy sales as the idiots who push through the doors. I hope that the people who stepped over this dying guy as he laid dying rot in hell. For sure the store should do something for this guy's family.

This is why I stay the HELL away from stores on black Friday. People are insane, where has humanity gone. I have seen people fight over toys when it's close to x-mas, I don't get it. May this poor man rest in peace. He wasn't even an employee of Walmart, he was a temporary worked, probably trying to make ends meet. During this a pregnant woman was also hurt and she went into labor. I don't want to judge, but why would you go if you are pregnant, it is a given that people are going to be stupid. The video surveillance shows that the people by the doors were not the ones doing the pushing, they were being shoved themselves. It is crazy, all over saving 20 bucks on something.

I've read in Miami Herald that when police was demanding that shoppers leave the store because a man was trampled to death, the people were screaming that they were waiting in line since Thursday morning . But this happened on Friday, and Thursday was Thanksgiving Day! So these insane people were standing in line for 24 hours , and they spent their Thanksgiving Day freezing in that line in front of Wal-Mart so they can buy some crap for $20.00 less.
I've never shopped on Black Friday, and I never will.

Wow I used to live over there a few years ago, I still live close as well! Crazy shit. Being from Long Island, I know how the stores usually are, on a normal day and they aren't at all bad, but Black Friday turns people into gremlins and that's why I'm doing my holiday shopping online mostly. I've built up plenty of coupons to use so I should get even better deals those stores were offering.

I live around Valley Stream, and I've shopped at this Walmart several times. It's like these people become monsters during the holidays. I know times are hard, but this is inconceivable. All he wanted to do was help control the crowd barging into the store like an excellent employee. Even at minimum wage, he showed us that some people actually work for their money. It's so sad to see his life end like this. I'm deff not a Black Friday shopper for this very reason. I think most of these comments has touched on what is running through my mind. Disgusting…Inhumane…Unbelievable.

My experience with Walmart shoppers is as expressed above and does not chenge however, it seems this crowd is a different demographic. Sickening, rude, disgusting, ignorant, cruel and self important comes in all flavors.

I used to work in a grocery store on Thanksgiving and then on Black Friday, and it was rude, selfish, ignorant shoppers who drove me out of the grocery business and made me hate the holidays. I once watched a man shove a little girl out of the way because she was reaching for an item that displayed 5% off and he wanted it. When I confronted him about it, I was called a bitch and told I should mind my own f*cking business.
But no matter how bad it was in a grocery store, I can't imagine what it's like working in a Wal-Mart or other department stores during the holidays. I hope the government bans this Black Friday bullshit. Human life is worth so much more than $50 off a flat screen.
