Some people can't seem to get their facts straight. First, 62% of Canadians voted AGAINST Harper in the last election. So a MAJORITY of voters didn't want him in power. Second, the Bloc is NOT part of the Coalition. They SUPPORT the Liberals and NDP, but will have now 'leader' status or power, which Layton and Dion will have.
I'm all for the Coalition. We need a change and Harper just isn't up to the job as PM. It's been pretty evident considering he hasn't lead his party to majority status. Harper is a fear monger. In his speech last night to the nation I lost count of how many times he dropped the S-bomb (separatist). A lot of Canadians are afraid of Quebec separating, but the truth is they(QB) never will.
And for those of you fearful of a coalition government, it can work! It worked back in 1917 and lasted a good 3 years. A coalition government wont destroy Canada but rather make it a better place.
And to everybody who is crying "62% of Canadians voted for other parties" SO FUCKING WHAT. A coalition government is NOT what 62% of Canadians voted for. The liberal voters did not vote for the NDP, the BQ voters NEVER would have voted for the liberals etc…

Less than two months ago, the Canadian public chose Stephen Harper as their leader in what is supposed to be a democratic process. It doesn't feel overly democratic that not ony can the wishes of the majority of voters be overturned, but that a) one of the parties involved in the coalition government is a separtist group, meaning a group that actively sought independence from Canada would now be actively involved in governing the country and b) the opposition party and the ringleader of the coalition had their worst performance in an election ever and at the time, the leader acknowledged he failed and resigned. Should this coalition go forward, he would suddently be the leader of the country that didn't have enough confidence to vote for him in the first place.
Interesting how the Americans are only picking up on this now. It's all anyone here has been talking about for nearly a week.

For those of you who are unaware of what a coalition government is and why it's not necessarily a bad thing, read the following:
A coalition government leads to more consensus-based politics, in that a government comprising differing parties (often based on different ideologies) would need to concur in regard to governmental policy. Another stated advantage is that a coalition government better reflects the popular opinion of the electorate within a country.
Pretty much nothing will really change per se except that Harper wont be called PM. Anyone who actually pays attention to Canadian politics on a regular basis KNOWS that the opposition are the ones in government who have the real power. The conservative can't get anything on their agenda passed because the opposition, which were elected by a majority of Canadians, disagrees with the Harper government. This coalition will actually allow work to get done. And, as I stated before, the coalition would represent the MAJORITY of Canadians.
Oh you morons. This is not treason…this is a part of our legal parliamentary system. Stephen Harper is a liar, a cheat and a good for nothing human being.
The majority of Canadians DID NOT vote for him or his party…and therefore a coalition government is fair and just.
Steve is not and has NEVER been my prime minister. He is a sorry excuse for a leader and the sooner he is gone, the better.

Personally I think that this move is a smart one on Harper's part. Its not like the MPs aren't going for Christmas holidays soon anyway, so its only a couple weeks difference, and besides, if major shit were to go down, Harper can spend money and enact emergency bills if he knows the other parties will vote yes for them, say if Vancouver was hit with a tsunami. People voted Harper in…and yes more people voted for the bloc, liberals and ndp, but not as one party, as THREE seperate parties…this is not what most of Canada wants…at least WESTERN Canada is fed up with this shit.

So for the record, Canada has had 2 elections in 2 years, Stephen Harper has won both of them, and yes they are minority governments but last I checked the largest minority is still the majority. What is the point of having an election if the leaders who lost can pull something like this.
Wasn't it just a few weeks ago that Dion was being criticized for his lack of leadership within the Liberal party and stepping down from his post as leader?
If this coalition were to go forward it essentially means that 300 million dollars of taxpayer money was spent on a federal election that served no purpose.
I want my government to concentrate on keeping the Canadian economy out of a recession, and not have to worry about having their elected rights taken away from them.

. Now the University of Toronto has peaked interest in a strike, I'm not sure why people demand things in the middle of a recession.

In fact, they had more votes than the Liberals AND NDP COMBINED! The only reason they would have a majority ruling is by including the BLOC (which are ONLY a Quebec party) who are NOT a national party. The people voted for those INDIVIDUAL parties, which all have VERY DIFFERENT views and ideals. I did NOT VOTE COALITION, I voted Liberal, however they LOST fair and square. Why did they not form the coalition BEFORE the election? The 'coalition' is just pissed because of the political funding 'freeze' just until the economy gets better. The reason HARPER is waiting until January for his report is, because he wants to see what the Americans will be doing, specificially what Obama's economic plans are. What the Liberals and NDP want to do is perfectly legal and democratic in a Parliamentary system, which is what Canada has - very different from the US system.
If the House of Commons (members of parliament elected) lose faith in the ruling party through a vote of non-confidence on major legislation such as the budget then the government falls. Then there can either be a new election or the other parties can try to lead the government. A coalition government has happened before on the provincial level in years past and can be effective.
Remember Harper and the conservatives only received 30% of the vote in an election with the lowest turn out in Canadian history.

Harper has been voted in twice and we are in a far better economical situation than the states so he is doing somethign right.
