I wasn’t expecting to watch it last night since I don’t have the Disney Channel at home, but I had to go out of town and my hotel room had the Channel, so I watched.

On content: I’m well familiar with how the Disney fantasy factory works, and this storyline was boilerplate saccharine twaddle, even keeping in mind the target audience of this film. The characters were as hollow as a rotted-out oak tree, and about as interesting. Even younger kids could have probably detected the fakeness of the Troy character’s instant decision to give up the brass ring (his chance to play hoops in the big time) just to go back and hang out with his buds.
On movie craft: Mr. Ortega is certainly a skilled craftsman behind the camera. Production values were top-notch, as befits an “A” Disney project, and all of the kids had lots of talent and charisma, and worked their tails off. I didn’t see the first film, but my understanding is that it was more of an ensemble, as opposed to this one, which was basically a soft-porn paean to the delights of Zac Efron’s tween-idol status. Ortega and his cinematographer pulled out all the stops to frame Efron in the most adoring visual manner possible – Efron positively glowed on the screen. He has (at least at this age) the special Hollywood gift that the camera (any camera) loves him, and he loves it right back. I don’t know if this will last, but it’s understandable that Efron and his managers will want to exploit this (but they have to be careful, or he will become a has-been when his looks mature). I did like Ortega’s use of shots that resembled Busby Berkeley shots (the feathers being pulled back, the swimmers diving into the pool in sync) – those were definitely in there for the parents and grandparents! And #275, you’re exactly right – the golf course solo was such a direct, shameless steal from ‘Footloose’ that Herbert Ross should sue for plagiarism!

I did like Ortega’s use of shots that resembled Busby Berkeley shots (the feathers being pulled back, the swimmers diving into the pool in sync) – those were definitely in there for the parents and grandparents! And #275, you’re exactly right – the golf course solo was such a direct, shameless steal from ‘Footloose’ that Herbert Ross should sue for plagiarism!

On Efron’s vocals: I’m quite taken by the potential that I hear in this voice, but I would never make a serious judgment until I hear an unamplified, unmixed example. Does anyone know of any examples of Efron singing au naturel that are available on the Internet?

On Efron’s hair: As I’ve stated before, he looks much better with darker hair. Just what IS his natural color> What we saw last night, or the lighter shade in all of the publicity photos?
oh goodness i havent seen it all yet cause i dont live in the us but i really cant wait to see it! i only watched the first one the other day and i love it! zac efron is soooooo hot!! and i dont actually think he's gay, i think people just think hes gay cause hes in this movie.. but sure some people have u start somewhere i guess! it is realllyyyyy cheesy but i like it!
I hated it. Even Zac Effron looked 100x gay in the movie. Vannessa was HORRIBLE and her little squeaky laughter almost made me turn it off. And of course Miley Cyrus was in there for 1 pathetic second which I thought made it even worse.
