Michigan Goes Too Far To Prevent “Annoying” People

Talk about a double standard!
A small town in Michigan has recently passed an ordinance to prohibit any annoyance. But it seems the legislation is actually bothering the residents more than helping.
As part of the harasment ordinance, the Brighton City Council voted earlier this month to make annoying behavior an offense that is punishable by a fine of $100.
One resident said, "I think it's the most ridiculous thing in the world. And I think everyone who voted for it should be impeached."
But officials disagree. Such as Brighton Police Chief Thomas Wightman who said, "It's not an annoyance ordinance. It's a harassment ordinance."
What the fuck is a harassment ordinance????
Basically it prohibits physical violence in all public areas. It also prohibits "insulting another person in a public place or harassing another person by telephone, e-mail or other forms of communication."
Though citizens are paying attention the paragraph that reads, "It shall be unlawful for a person to engage in a course of conduct or repeatedly commit acts that alarm or seriously annoy another person and that serve no legitimate purpose."
People will now be ticketed for things like "continued neighborhood disputes, repeated text messages or ongoing harassment between ex-spouses or former boyfriends and girlfriends."
Looks like the town's officials need to pull that stick out of their butts.
"Annoyance" can be subjective and it does kind of sound like it's restricting peoples' personal rights.

I'm from Brighton and basically the only good thing that has come out of this whole thing is that it just made it to this site. Pretty much made my christmas.
I also plan on continuing to be "annoying" until Jan. 2nd when it goes into effect.

Glad I'm in Ohio. This is just dumb, if you want to tell your boyfriend he's an asshole, you should be able to do it for free. Seems like we're all stepping towards suing for everything. Thirty years ago people barely sued or took legal action for little things like this. Michigan, YOU'RE RIDICULOUS.

Hey, this retarded. Why does everyone seem to group one stupid city with the rest of Michigan?! I don't hear this kind of crap going in other states and people saying that all of that state is wack.
Plus I can see where this law is going. People are way too stressed and psycho. Things sometimes get out of hand and people can be very vicious with each other. It's sad. It's a law with a slippery slope but there were good intentions.

Sometimes there's no recourse when someone won't stop bothering you yet they haven't hurt you in anyway, they haven't broken a law, and the only thing to do is get a no contact order, but sometimes that doesn't work because the judge can say it's not bad enough to warrant a no contact order. So this law makes it illegal to consistently fuck with someone, I think it's awesome.
So can the person who receives a ticket give a ticket to the person whom they annoyed because the ticket itself was annoying?

I'm from this town…it isn't really small either. And it is closer than 50 minutes to Detroit and is considered part of Metro Detroit. And no, I don't claim to be part of Detroit personally. Why the hell would you want to?
