PETA Goes After Kid's Network

Filed under: Film Flickers > Media Minute

wenn1214801.jpg

PETA usually target the same offenders like Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss, who are known for their repeated use of animal furs and products.

But, this time, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is going after Nickolodean and their latest kid flick for the holidays, Merry Christmas, Drake & Josh.

The group is upset over the use of a live chimpanzee in the movie instead of using CGI or animatronics.

PETA has taken to their site and online blogs now to protest the flick starring, Drake Bell and Josh Peck.

The official website for PETA states:

"Tell Nickelodeon to Stop Chimpanzee Abuse

We recently learned that Nickelodeon's new holiday film, Merry Christmas, Drake & Josh, features a live chimpanzee. With so many realistic alternatives available—such as CGI, animatronics, costumes, and blue screen—there is no excuse for Nickelodeon to use live great apes in its programs.

Not only was the chimpanzee in the film portrayed in a demeaning way and even referred to as a monkey, the use of great apes in the entertainment industry is also inherently cruel. Training great apes to perform almost always includes physical abuse to ensure that the animals know "who's boss" and do as the trainer demands. In fact, the wide-toothed chimpanzee "grin" so often seen in movies and on TV is actually a grimace of fear or a carefully choreographed response to a command. By the time great apes are 8 years old—around the beginning of young adulthood—they are too strong to be safely handled and are frequently discarded in hideous roadside zoos or are warehoused in dismal, appalling conditions. PETA investigations have revealed that former "celebrity" apes were living in small cages littered with garbage and feces and denied basic necessities (like wholesome food and adequate veterinary care).

Please join us in urging Nickelodeon to follow the lead of other progressive companies—including SEGA, Honda, PUMA, Yahoo!, Keds, and others—that have already pledged never to use great apes in the future.

Please take a few moments to fill out the form below to send an automated letter to Nickelodeon Executive Vice President of Programming and Planning Peter Danielsen. Ask Nickelodeon to pledge never to use great apes in any of its programs again."

If everything above is true, then maybe they should have spent the extra money and gone for CGI or something.

What do U think about this?

    drake and josh sucks!!!!!!!!!

  2. 102

PETA is not saying that the chimp was abused they are mad because they used a real chimp and I think they need to calm down the chimp was portrayed as loving and "sweet" they were loving the chimp in the movie

  3. 103

I'm not a fan of PETA, but I completely agree that chimpanzees should not be used for entertainment purposes. As many have already stated, only young animals are used this way. The adults are far too strong and dangerous. This creates a huge ethical problem of what to do with the adults. There are simply not enough places that are capable of taking them in and caring for them for 60+ years.

PETA (People eating tasty animals) is a crazy terrorist organization. Violence towards humans for the sake of a beast is a sign of ignorance. Before ANYONE gets up and says they support PETA they should look into the long list of human violence acts they have committed. But since when does anyone do any research before they lick their finger, stick it in the air, and go where they think the wind blows? Hey PETA! I eat deer. I shoot them with a gun and gut 'em in the woods! Maybe these organizations should spend some time on some causes that are real! I would like PETA to get concerned that hundreds of thousands of cats and dogs will be dropped off at the pound this year by their fair weather owners, to which they will be euthanized and then dumped into landfills by government paid employees! Where was PETA when I found a pile of half-dead puppies at the landfill when I was 8 years old! They were busy pummeling some poor brod for owning a mink coat! Please report something that is noteworthy Perez! PETA is a fucking joke!!!

peta is so ridiculous. they should really just shut up and target really appalling animal cruelty situations…..not just celebrities.

  6. 106

peta is always making things out to be worse than they actually are. not everyone is a sadistic animal abuser.

  7. 107

Do they realize that ANIMALS eat other animals? Why not protest that? Because it's a natural part of the FOODCHAIN? HELLO? Same here stoonads!

  8. 108

peta needs to remove the large stick thats up their ass this year. Theyre attacking EVERYONE and its just stupid. I used to respect PETA but now, with all the stuff theyve pulled this year just makes me hate them.

Please go to www.janegoodall.org. The grandure of abuse this earth angel and her insitiute have witnessed are heart wrenching. Their rescues continue on a daily basis.
When a chimp's fur is gone, as the one in this picture it is from stress he has endured. This chimp has mostly a variety of lives from a variety of owners. This previous one may just be his best one. Who knows forsue but him. Bless his heart.

  11. 111

Does Peta understand that this is a childs movie? Okay, so they called a chimp a monkey. Is most of the young children watching this movie going to know the difference? I hope it's not true behind the scenes that the animal is being abused but do all humans have to be abusers? There is still some damn good people in our gene pool. At least I would like to think so.

Re: MissThing – you're the one who should shut the F-U-C-K up. I'm sick and tired of obese Americans with double digit IQs like yourself who think all is at your service & for your entertainment. NO MORON, you can't fuck, eat or abuse every other living being just because you don't have a better life than having to stuff yourself with pop corn as you watch banal movies. And as much as I don't approve PETA 100%, their stance is truthful and conscience-ridden in this case. yesterday or today, animals that are 'trained' to do what doesn't come out of their their are 'conditioned' very harshly.

  13. 113

IMTS–> of their nature in my earlier post. see, dealing with dumb fuck you causes temporary impairment.

AND people who think PETA is a TERRORIST ORGANIZATION, are just as dumb as I thought they'd be. Again, I am not a PETA activist and has close to zero likes for PETA, but ignorant shitheads who call an animal a beast in a pathetic attempt at humanism, should just have cancer and die. That'd be the sweetest gift of you to rest of humanity.

  14. 114

    fuck animals! free vick!

  15. 115

Yeah, God forbid they refer to the chimp as a monkey. How awful. *rolls eyes* PETA…needs a hobby. The general idea of what they stand for is good but they always end up making asses of themselves.

  16. 116

People don't call Apes Monkeys to "degrade" them. If you don't personally work for Nickolodeon, you're not a credible source on this particular matter. All I have to say is PETA needs to chill the eff out.

  17. 117

if it harms the animal (and whether or not you like them, PETA knows) than NO animal should be tossed aside. and, hey, that means YOU-don't toss aside whatever cat or dog or fish, that you decide that you can't deal with anymore for whatever reason. don't be heartless or without conscious. your pet depends on you.

Re: Six7Six7 – tough guy–why are you on this website? sometimes the most 'macho' are actually gay.

    119

FUCK PETA! God they're so annoying, did they personally ask the monkey what- sorry "chimpanzee", what it was feeling like? lol, lay off. i love drake and josh.

  20. 120

I'm sending my contribution to PETA ASAP. Sick of people abusing animals.

  21. 121

what the hell…. ok i understand PETA being against all the furs and such that people wear… but having real animals in movies is not abuse gosh. most of these animals are PETS that people own and take care of. This is pretty much the most unheardof comment an animal rights group could make. Are they going to strat protesting the use of dogs in movies as well?? lol

  22. 122

    FUCK THEM

    PETA SUCKS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THEY ARE TO MUCH…….they are terrorists

  23. 123

MMMMMMM, steak…tastes…sooooooo good ;) I really wonder if peta has a secret base where they kill humans & marry & breed with animals.

  24. 124

I love animals. I only very rarely eat fish because of the treatment of farm animals. I think they should be required to rehome the chimps to animal sanctuaries. That being said, we have child actors. If the chimps are well treated, there's no reason to boycott their use. If people never see animals, they won't ever care about them. People care about chimps because they have this positive view of them from watching them be cute in movies.

"Not only was the chimpanzee in the film portrayed in a demeaning way and even referred to as a monkey,"

a monkey?? A MONKEY?!?!?! how dare they!!! do they not know the differance between a monkey and a chimpanzee?!??!? how fucking rude!!…im going to write a letter!!!

    >

  26. 126

I'm a supporter of the ASPCA and all for the ethical treatment of animals but PETA goes too far. I have seen the movie, and I wasn't offended that it wasn't CGI, etc..

Of course, I have a female cat that is named "mr. kitty" and she may have a complex about it so PETA should come after me.

    also, I eat meat. *gasp*

  27. 127

I keep looking at the picture and I know that I should know who it is but I can't say it? Is it P. Diddy?

  28. 128

I am totally against animal abuse, but saying that calling a chimpanzee a monkey is demeaning is a bit over the top.

  29. 129

Peta is stupid. They kill more animals than they save. Whine is all the do and actually do no good for anyone. Not even the animals they claim to care so much for.

  30. 130

    Re: Nowearenever
I completely agree. If all these PETA fans would take time to research, they'd learn PETA actually kills more animals than they save each year because they 'rescue' them and have no place to keep them.

And some of you bitches need to learn to spell. Shit firefox does it for you and ya'll look like d-bags.
