“America’s toughest sheriff,” Joe Arpaio, is set to star in Smile…You’re Under Arrest!, a Candid Camera-cum-America’s Most Wanted reality TV show in which scofflaws are lured into arrest through elaborated setups. The program debuts Saturday on Fox, of course.
The controversial Maricopa County – Arizona – Sheriff, who has been accused of famewhoring, says that producers approached him with the show and added, “This is just another outside-the-box effort to join forces with the private industry/Hollywood to use certain techniques. It’s entertainment. But on the other hand, we’re able to accomplish a mission and also arrest people out on warrants.”
The show will be another unconventional approach to crime and punishment, his others including infamous Tent City and mandatory pink underpants for inmates.
Show creator and producer Scott Satin says, “I just think he’s quite the character and he’s great on camera. Sheriff Joe, he’s willing to go out and get these guys and do whatever he takes.”
Depending on how the first three half-hour episodes perform, Fox could be interested in doing more.
It might receive some stiff competition from To Catch A Predator!
