Canadian-born R&B singer Keisha Chante has been tapped to portray the late Aaliyah in a biopic recounting the life and untimely death of the hip-hop and R&B artist.
The film is scheduled for release next year.
Although Chante's acting resume is a short one, she has starred in a number of independent flicks and boasts a 2006 R&B album out called 2U with another on the way.
Sources say she was selected for her striking resemblance to the multi Grammy-nominated Aaliyah.

I think Ciara looks and sounds more like Aaliyah.. she would be better for the role.
Lauren London looks more like Aaliyah than this chick.

I'm sure ultimately babygirl's family has the best judgement. I'm just glad they're finally making a movie. I hope it's just a heart-warming as the Selena movie.

You know, I'm really happy none of you got to do the casting for this film, because almost no one here seems to understand anything about who looks like who. NO, Alicia Keys does not favor Aaliyah. You're just saying that because you like Alicia Keys. NO, Ciara does not favor Aaliyah. You're saying that because you like Ciara. And who was that person who said Timbaland's wife? Are you joking? Did you actually see who that was before you named her? My god.
Do everyone a favor and leave the casting to the casting directors. You people have terrible opinions and I wouldn't see any movie you direct at all. Even if you rage at who's playing Aaliyah in this film or talk out your other end about "they need to recast ASAP", it still won't change the fact that shooting has already begun and there's nothing you can do to stop anything.

Singer 'LINA' has a striking resemblance to the late beautiful Aaliyah as well. I'd always hoped she'd be considered for that role. She made an appearance in the 'THIS CHRISTMAS' movie (w/Chris Brown) -she's the opening performance at the start of the movie. Can't wait to see this film!

Aaliyah was an absolutely gorgeous and talented young lady with an absolutely magnetic smile, it'd be hard for me to pick someone to play her because I feel like she was one of a kind!

Re: Charmer – If you dont know who Aaliyah is then you have no sense of R&B music, she has been around for years not just one year then she died, she was a big part of music and if she hadnt passed away in that plane crash she would have been one of the biggest R&B artist of the 2000's. She also was in movies. She was the nicest artist to live on this planet so step off and stop acting like she wasnt anything important she was a big part of Missy Elliots; Timberland, Jay-Z, Damon Dash life. She is still one of the best R&B singers and people like Ciara and Kesiha Cole wouldnt have been as big if she wouldnt have paved the way for that style of music and artist.

It doesn't matter anyways, I think Keshia can do it… she can sing, can act and whatever she do… but for Ciara, I agree but the thing is, she wasn't in the movie yet so yeah, I really think that Ciara can do this as well but since Aaliyah is her idol… so let's see the movie first hehe I can't wait when it comes out here in Australia… Hopefully soon this year…

I've been waiting a long time for someone to make an Aaliyah movie and i was worried about who they would pick to play her and i don’t think they picked very well.Aaliyah was a talented and beautiful person on the inside and out and she should be portrayed the same way. This girl has some slutty pix. I cant believe they're going to piss off her fans like this. I know a lot of aaliyah fans that are NOT happy about this.
