A Worthwhile Cause

"Traditionally, books have been rare in Laos. The number of children who go to school is slowly but steadily increasing, yet many children have never read a book outside of school textbooks. Few Lao people think that reading can be fun, can add to their education, or will provide information to improve their quality of life.

Indeed, in the past, it couldn't do any of those things. Very few books were published in Laos, and they never reached the villages where most people lived.

Big Brother Mouse intends to change that. This publishing project was started by a retired American publisher working with several bright and dedicated Laotian college students. Our staff now includes high school students and recent college graduates. Together, we look at the books children have enjoyed most anywhere in the world. We think about what underlying concepts made those books successful. Then we ask if those concepts could be used in Laos, with new Lao content and pictures."

Why not send the books we have spent millions on that are in these inner city libraries? (They_ could find new places to write there Nasty Rhymes and comments and the kids in Lao's would be more than happy to have books TO READ?

This actually breaks my heart as I am a passsionate and devoted fan of reading books. I wish more and more ppl would realize the power it is to pick up a book and read and what it does for a child's mind. This organization needs to be supported 100% and I hope it reaches everyone, especially the men/women and children that have been deprived of reading.

I wonder if any of these books will go to the Hmong children that the Lao government forces in to hiding and kills.

This is really heartbreaking to hear…I am an immigrant from Laos….about 28 years ago. I am 29 now, so America is all I know. But having to hear about the kids suffering from any third world country, whether it be from starvation or education, it brings tears to my eyes. Why not give a little bit from what we have in surplus here to hopefully change a child's life. I have been given the opportunity to educate myself, therefore creating an "easier" life, let's all chip in a few dollars to help the innocent kids that may have the same future as me!

while i was there friends visited an orphanage with 150 exercise books and 150 pencils. all the kids were bathed and dressed in their best clothes and then lined up to receive their books and pencils. tragically there were 300 kids there so half missed out. there is so much you can do for the people of laos with a small amount of dollars, their average wage is about $30 a month. so just think how much you can do with your loose change! just look up laos or luang prabang on the net.
