Talk about unrealistic standards.
Hottie Czech supermodel Karolina Kurkova has been under intense scrutiny and faced some tough criticism lately. Apparently, the thin model gained some weight last year.
The Brazilian media even criticized the 24 year-old in June for her supposed "cellulite and love handles" after walking in the Sao Paulo Fashion Week. They also called her "too fat" after she walked in the Victoria's Secret lingerie show in Miami last November.
In order to get "slim" for the lingerie show, Kurkova has said she dieted on mainly fresh veggies, protein, and salad.
And, even before last November's show, a source said she cut out all carbs and worked out for hours in order to get slimmer like the other Victoria's Secret models. The friend says, "She was exhausted and didn’t get down to where she wanted to be."
In fact, Kurkova almost didn't make it into the VS show due to her weight, they claim. It wasn't until the last minute that they decided to include her. That explains why her name wasn't on any of the pre-show press materials.
But, according to another insider, it seems her weight "problems" are attributed to the ever popular thyroid disorder which is said to mess with her metabolism.
Forbes states Kurkova is currently the eighth highest-paid supermodel in the world. So she's obviously doing something right!
We think Karolina needs to have a sitdown with Tyrannosaurus, on her show - of course!

OKAY If you really want to know why this is, either read or just skip to the bottom:
I have a fashion design background (PARSONS, whatup!) and the reason designers like to have their models grossly thin has a lot to do with the actual art of fashion design.
When designers sketch out the line, we are trained to draw the body a certain way (a "croquis") that is a stretched version of an actual human body. A normal figure is about 7 human heads tall, a fashion figure is stretched to 12 human heads tall.. and the fashion figure's head is even stretched itself.
It's the best way to show detail and form of a garment, because the curves of one's body isn't distracting from the piece. Why do you think models are so plain-faced? Same reasoning. In fact, in many exercises we had cut out magazine pictures of people and literally stretched them (they are the same proportions as Barbie). It's the art. Not real life. That's where people get confused.
As an extension of the sketches, fashion shows are meant to bring the sketches and designs to life, so designers want to have as close to a croquis as possible. The more grossly exaggerated the body, the "better". This isn't okay by any means, but that's the reasoning behind it.
Fashion=art art=drama drama=exaggeration. Get it?

She's a beautiful and healthy-looking woman…but she IS fat for a model.
I think the whole modelling industry is fucked, but to be honest, she's one of the lucky girls who has made a great career from it, so she does have a responsibility to maintain a certain weight if she wants to book campaigns.
The simple matter is, people don't want to see "normal-looking" people in fashion shows/adverts, they want to see absolutely stunning people, so that they can trick themselves into thinking that they too will look like that if they buy the clothes.

I am a healthcare professional and the first thing I thought of when I saw how hard she's been working is that her thyroid is messed up. Some people I believe are asses and excuse mongers, but I don't believe she is one of them. This is her livelihood, why would she want to jeopardize that?
You really need to think a bit more before you type. I know it's how you gain attention and that is your livelihood but more human compassion in this world would go a long way towards healing it.

But the fashion industry has become so jaded that anyone who's more than 100 pounds at 5'11" is fat. That's practically an impossible build. This is why all the supermodels these days are like 15 years old and from poorer nations. Once they start growing out of their awkward teenage years and into their 20s (aka "become fat"), they are disposed of and return to russia or uzbekistan or whatever nation they hailed from. Also, not only are they skinny (childhood malnourishment us normal reason), but the fashion peeps are very aware that jf they get underage models from developing nationsm they don't have to pay them that much and can rip them off so easily. What a perfect system, yes? Ha! Props to Karolina for starting out as one of those but coming out on top!
