Additionally, Pfizer Inc. has announced that it is buying rival drugmaker Wyeth and plans to cut 8,000 jabs.

Ironically, despite these thousands of layoffs announced this morning, the NYSE is on the rise…seems like the ONLY thing corporations are concerned about is their "bottom line" and the shareholders. As long as the CEO's have theirs, they could care less about the unemployed or underemployed in this country.
Perhaps I'm wrong, but it almost seems that you can barely stifle your glee at others losing their jobs, their livelihoods. You run an entertainment blog! Most people that visit your site do so as a diversion from "real" news, which given the current economy is usually bad news. You are no authority on business and most of the layoffs you report are not connected to the entertainment industry. Please stick to what you know. If we want to get the latest on the economic climate in America, we'll look to a more credible, more academic source.

Ummmmm, sorry Perez, but the Pfizer acquisition of Wyeth has actually stimulated the stock market. This was really a long time coming, as this allows an underperforming small molecule drug co to merge with a larger biotech co to produce better products and more efficiently. Lets stick to celebs, k?

Yes, I agree with Badger05 regarding the pharmaceuticals - mainly because I work for one of them. Wyeth/Pfizer are cutting jobs worldwide….and when it's looked at that way, it's not all that bad. It's not good but it's all to stimulate growth and productivity. And for the other person saying that Dr.'s are pill pushers….you know NOTHING of the R&D world of medicine. If you don't know what you're talking about then don't talk!!

Not every pharmaceutical company makes drugs like tylenol and asprin. They make drugs to combat diseases like cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, etc. We have some of the best scientists in the world trying to combat diseases that crippled past generations, and all you do is pick and choose what information you deem "just" without thinking of the countless numbers of researchers dedicating their lives for your health.
