Phelps Suspended!

Olympic Gold medalist Michael Phelps' really bad week just got a fucload worse!
The pot-smoking swimmer has just been suspended from competition for three months from USA Swimming.
On Thursday evening, USA Swimming released the following statement:
USA Swimming has reprimanded Michael Phelps under its Code of Conduct by withdrawing financial support and the eligibility to compete for a period of three months effective today, Feb. 5, 2009.
This is not a situation where any anti-doping rule was violated, but we decided to send a strong message to Michael because he disappointed so many people, particularly the hundreds of thousands of USA Swimming member kids who look up to him as a role model and a hero.
Phelps has voluntarily accepted this reprimand and "has committed to earn back our trust."

This is a very slight slap on the wrist that won't mean anything. U.S. Long Course Nationals aren't until summer, and Worlds are after that. This so-called sanction won't affect his training or his competitive schedule in the least. The more major thing is the Kellogg's endorsement cancellation, but I'm sure he's got way enough other stuff to get by, to say the least. Watch your back, Mike!

Yes it was a stupid thing to get photographed doing that especially when you're being marketed from within an inch of his life. However, you'd think he'd been photographed doing crack off a hooker's ass the way the media are overreacting! Much worse happens at the Olympics athletes village - trust me! When this whole 'bong-gate' story broke, lots of photos suddenly got deleted from various facebook pages!

Seems a bit harsh especially since no anti-doping rule was broken. I would like to send a strong message to certain bosses or companies with crappy customer service or overtly judgmental people but I don't have that luxury.
I was afraid something like this was going to happen, but USA Swimming did not exagerate with Phelps "punishment". I guess they had to send a message out before "crazy" people started getting involved. I wish Phelps the best of luck.

what's also pretty fucking stupid- it's not like he was using any steroids… Everybody's acting like he's been them instead of pot. When I read Michael Phelps apology for being caught on camera smoking a bong, I felt a bit wonky myself. It was as if I was wearing yesterday's damp Speedo. You know that feeling? Uneasy in the stomach and the constant urge to bring your knees up really high when walking in an effort to attract more air to the tiny wet garment. Why was I feeling this bizarre gamy deja vu? Can't pin-point it. Then it hit me as I was driving to lunch, DING! This feels weird because his apology is almost word for word the exact same apology Phelps issued when he got popped for DUI in Baltimore after the last Olympics. That's it! A carbon foot print copy. I bet you forgot about that DUI.

Wow. While I certainly don't condone drug use, this is getting ridiculous. This is all over one photo?! First, they are not even legally admissible in a court of law. Second, there is absolutely no way to prove he was actually inhaling an illegal substance. Clever that USA Swimming says this isn't over a rule violation (of course it isn't! there is NO proof a rule has been violated), but … on what grounds are they really suspending him then?! For not living up to his hero status?! This is total and complete BS. Olympians are not perfect people; they are human beings who have accomplished superhuman feats. Don't then punish them for actually being human. Consequences are fine, but unfairly, overly punitive, Draconian measures are unacceptable.
