The only way the Cuban government can settle this once and for all, though, is to parade him (alive) around Havana this weekend. No pictures or video!

90 minutes past 4 p.m. (That means 5:30… hehe) My sources at CNN (News producers) have no information to confirm this at this time. They giggled when I asked… These rumors come up all the time. Only time wil tell.

If this is true the head news outlets are waiting to confirm because I have checked them all to see if they have reported anything and there is not one story. The BBC has a story from 3 days ago stating that the Cuban government says he's fine. We shall see if Perez can now stand triumphant as a new "trusted" news source. Oh God!

This time the rumor is not dying down. Can it be true this time?
Rumors are spreading like wildfire, that Fidel Castro has died.
Cubans on the island are telling Democracia Movement President Ramon Saul Sanchez that despite numerous rumors, Fidel Castro is still alive.
Sanchez says his sources on the island tell him everything there remains calm.
U.S. federal officials are not getting word that Cuban leader Fidel Castro is dead.
News Radio 610 WIOD reporters have also spoken to city of Miami, Miami-Dade police and city and county officials who say they are not mobilizing in preparation for an announcement.
Bottom line — no one can confirm that Castro is indeed dead. At this point it is nothing more than a rampant rumor.

An ABC news source in Cuba said all is quiet in Havana and as far as he knows, no announcement is pending.
In fact, the president of the Cuban National Assembly Ricardo Alarcon is reported to be on the beach in Varadero and would presumably be in Havana if a major announcement was imminent.
Local 10's assignment desk also contacted police departments , which said they are monitoring the situation and taking it very seriously. Miami police said they are in contact with the FBI "hourly."

My friend lives in Cuba and says it IS true. But they are insisting on keeping it as quiet as possible, however people have taken to the streets. The government has banned all news from recording it, but I wouldn't be surprised if videos show up on the internet in the next few hours. The announcement will come in Miami at 7 or 7:30 PM.

As a journalist, I believe Perez for a few reasons:
A.) He has 6-7 million readers already, he doesn't need to lie in order to get more attention. He's already the number 1 entertainment blogger in the country. What is there to gain? He knows that statements such as this, if incorrect, do nothing but incite inane and insulting comments. But that being said, it doesn't seem like he cares about those comments much so good on him.
B.) Political announcements are often rescheduled as speeches are re-strategized to appropriately convey an administration's sentiments and deal with public emotion - so it's not unlikely that this is the case re. his 4pm EST announcement.
C.) I think he probably did die several days ago but it's being reported late.
D.) 9/11, Pat Tillman's death and election fuck ups in 2000 should have taught anyone with critical thinking skills already that the US Govt and our dear national news sources are not necessarily the bastion of all things true.

*****UPDATE!!***** My friend in Miami's boyfriend is a cop. He told her that they're prepared for the announcement at 9 PM tonight that Castro has died. Keep in mind the Cuban government is deliberately being VERY secretive about this — and the information leaked against their will. Officially, they are not confirming or denying, but it's true, and I bet you 100% they will not release PROOF that Castro is supposedly alive because he is not.
