Calif. aquarium blames flooding on curious octopus

Staff at the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium in California say the trickster who flooded their offices with sea water was armed. Eight-armed, to be exact.

They blame the soaking they discovered Tuesday morning on the aquarium's resident two-spotted octopus, a tiny female known for being curious and gregarious with visitors. The octopus apparently tugged on a valve and that allowed hundreds of gallons of water to overflow its tank.

Aquarium spokeswoman Randi Parent says no sea life was harmed by the flood, but the brand new, ecologically designed floors might be damaged by the water.

  5. 5

You should have used a pic of Octo-Mom

  6. 6

Umm what does the squid in the picture have to do with an octopus? Cute story tho..

  7. 7

That guy in the pic looks stupid.

  8. 8

"Curious and gregarious with visitors" female octopus??? What a cutie! :-D

  9. 9

That guy, is being attacked, by octa pie!!

  10. 10

    Ooops. Animals are such pranksters.

  11. 11

I'm sorry you must have mistaken us for people who cared…

  12. 12

The guy in the picture kind of looks like High Pitch Eric from the Howard Stern show.

They're actually fairly intelligent creatures. I saw a special on them and was quite surprised that they're playful and affectionate too.

In one center, they knew who liked them and who didn't. Those who didn't like them had to avoid the tank area because the octopi would splash water on them.

For humans they liked, they would throw and arm or two over the side of the tank to interact with the person they liked.

In a private home, a guy's fish kept disappearing. But he wasn't sure which of the other fish was eating them. So he set up a camera one night. The next morning he learned that his octopus (in a tank on the other side of the room), was escaping, crossing the room, eating the fish, crossing the room back to it's tank…

If I ever have the money for a huge salt water tank, I'm getting one.

Ecologically designed floors and they can't handle getting wet? In an aquarium? Seriously, how fucking stupid is that?

  15. 15

TEE HEE! OCTOPAE ARE CLEVER. I BELONG TO AN AQUARIUM WHERE I LIVE AND OUR OCTOPUS WAS SO SMART HE SNUCK OUT OF HIS TANK AT LIGHT AND UNSCREWED LIGHTBULBS ALL OVER THE PLACE! HE GAVE THE NIGHT WATCHMAN QUITE A FRIGHT I IMAGINE. I USED TO DATE ONE OF THEIR MARINE BIOLOGISTS AND HE GAVE ME TOURS AROUND THE PLACE AFTER HOURS……….AMONG OTHER THINGS.

  16. 16

I WISH I WERE AN OCTOPUS.

  17. 17

    FYI… that's a squid, not an octopus.

  18. 18

I like animals better then people at times!

  19. 19

Re: M*I*A*R – Give my valve tug would ya?

  20. 20

Clever animal! Much cleverer than most humans! :-)

  21. 21

@Rolling Eyes: That s the main reason I became vegetarian many years ago! I think animals FEEL and THINK much more than we like to think! So, if this is so, it s truly BARBARIAN treating them like we humans treat them to get their milk, eggs, flesh/meat….I feel much better WITHOUT eating any part of an animal! :-)

    Re: Stephanie
    Me too!
There s a phrase in my language, don t know if it exists in English as well: The more I learnt about humans in the course of life, the more I learnt to love ANIMALS!" :-)
Meanting, that humans are the only species that is DELIBERATELY and KNOWINGLY cruel(!) to other creatures! Animals are NOT!

That was a poorly written description. If you look at the video, the octopus didn't "tug a valve", it pushed a tube gushing water into its tank up and over the tank cover so that it gushed water all over the tank cover instead. Little troublemaker! :D

  24. 24

    I prefer animals over people.

  25. 25

im not surprised I have herd stories of Octos that get out of there tank and go to another octos tank to be with them.

  26. 26

Trying this again. By the by, I'm the guy in the pic up there wearing one of my squidhats. Don't know how WENN got a hold of the pic with their slimy mitts but here's a real photo credit: obeymybrain.com

  27. 27

  28. 28

    Now I want one :(

  29. 29

    Adorable!!!!

  30. 30

    No picture???

  31. 31

The octopus has more talent than Lady GaGa.
