im from vancouver and it is illegal to smoke weed there. they have cafe's dowtown though where u can, but they only keep them open because there is a really bad problem with harsher drugs down there, so theyd rather people smoke weed, than crack. they also have alot of safe injection sites too. a druggies paradise

I second #66, Nicholas-the voice of reason re: Lily's ciggy - my husband is from England, we go there all the time, I just got back, and you most frequently see hand rolled tobacco cigarettes because they are so $$$. They even sell them in mini-packs and also sell them individually in convenience store.

All of Canada is fairly friendly about it but it's even more so in BC and the quality available is way way higher there, not to mention being way cheaper.

Being a Canadian (but I don't live in Vancouver), I find it highly unlikely that you can walk around smoking a "j". It is still illegal here is Canada.
You can smoke herb anywhere in Canada and not get arrested -not only in Vancouver…Canada rocks. It's not officially legal per say but not even the strictest of police are going to give you a citation. You have to have under a certain amount so you don't get booked for trafficing or intent to sell or whatever but on any given summer night, you can smell it all over the city/town/village/cave/mountain etc…

Britt from Vancouver - you can't actually walk around smoking it, but you are allowed to carry amount enough for personal use, so if they shove their hands in your pocket and you've got a couple joints they cant do shit. I've smoked pot basically everywhere in Vancouver. I'm not a stoner, I go to school and everything but cops really don't care as long as you're not obnoxious and doing stupid things. One new years, we were smoking pot down granville street (a really major street downtown) in front of police and they didn't give us a second look. Cops will give you shit if you're obnoxious and pissing off other people.. but they'll just take your weed off you and tell you to go away.

it is not illegal to smoke or possess it, under a certain amount but that amount is quite substantial. it is illegal tho to sell or buy it which is pretty funny.

In Montreal it is legal. You can smoke next to the cops they can't do anything to you. I thought it was a Canadian law actually… an amount for personal consumption is legal. Apparently the UN did a survey and Canada has the highest amount of pot smokers in the world, higher than Holland where it's completely legal.
If smoking weed is such a tiny little thing in Canada why do Canadian border patrol officers practically stick a flashlight up your butt looking for your stash? Takes hours to cross sometimes. And I gave up pot years ago. The most difficult border crossing (for bands) in the Western Hemisphere is from the US to Canada.

It is true! I live in Yaletown (high end neighborhood dt) with my boyfriend and I have been known to smoke on the streets. Coincidentally, the hood is crawling with successful gays (my love is a stock broker and I am currently rockin out the 'housewife' role until studies start next week).

The same is true for most of Canada. If you get caught with pot, most cops will either just make you dump it or, if you're really lucky, pretend they didn't see it. There are a few anal older cops who might be dicks about it, but for the most part you won't be ticketed/arrested unless you're carrying like a pound of the stuff.

It's true! I'm from Vancouver and pot is basically treated as legal—I mean, you're not going to see people lighting up right in front of the police but if you're at a concert or large grouping of people they (police) won't do anything… EVEN if you're right beside them. If the police do catch you, however, all they're going to do is take your pot away. You won't get arrested. Unless you're carrying a HUGE amount.
Anyone wonder why Vancouver is consistently voted the best place to live in the world?? haha.
