Could It Have Been Prevented? More Details On The Events Leading Up To Natasha Richardson's Passing

Filed under: Anglophilia > Sad Sad > Natasha Richardson

wenn2128436__opt11__opt1.jpg

The timeline of events following Natasha Richardson's tragic accident have been pieced together, revealing "critical lapses in her care" that may have led to the actress' death.

Richardson fell not long after 12:43 pm on Monday, which was when a member of the Mont Tremblant ski patrol was dispatched to the site of Natasha's accident.

An ambulance arrived at 1:00 pm to the bottom of the ski slope and waited for Richardson to meet paramedics for treatment via toboggan.

Richardson reportedly "whisk[ed] by on the sled without stopping," and the ski patrol informed the paramedics that Natasha had refused treatment and they were free to go.

Richardson made a stop at the Mont Tremblant clinic with her ski instructor, which may or may not have been staffed by a physician, and headed back to her suite at a nearby hotel.

Another ambulance was dispatched to the hotel at 3:00 pm after Richardson's ski instructor called the hotel manager.

"The instructor called the general manager and said Richardson had a headache and she was not feeling well. The [general manager] went to see her said she was going to call an ambulance. Richardson said she didn't need an ambulance or a doctor - and the GM insisted that an ambulance come and get her," revealed Yves Coderre, director of the ambulance company that services Mont Tremblant.

When paramedics arrived to Richardson's room, they saw "something that wasn't right… [The paramedic] saw some signs indicating her condition was destabilizing. He called ahead to the hospital to let them know of her condition and he put the siren on," said Coderre.

Richardson left Mont Tremblant for Centre Hospitalier Laurentain in Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts at 3:47 pm where the actress' condition was stabilized.

After being stabilized, Natasha was rushed to the trauma center of the Sacre-Coeur hospital in Montreal. Richardson did not arrive to the trauma center until 7:00 pm due to the 52 mile trek between the two hospitals.

The Sacre-Coeur hospital was unable to provide helicopter transportation to the late actress because Montreal is unequipped with helicopters for medical transport.

"Our system isn't set up for traumas and doesn't match what's available in other Canadian cities, let alone in the States," said Tarek Razek, the director of trauma services for the McGill University Health Centre in Montreal.

How heartbreaking.

We only hope Natasha's untimely death will set the wheels in motion for a reevaluation of the trauma system in Montreal.

Hey 20 years old who voted for BO and now want SOCALIZED medicine - read the statement CAREFULLY - those places DO have SOCIALIZED medicine SUCK!
Like in London - if you're not RICH you'll die waiting for the homeless people to be seen first!

Want to destroy American healthcare?! - JUST INVOLVE the govt.!

Our system isn't set up for traumas and doesn't match what's available in other Canadian cities, let alone in the States,"

Re: Esin Emko – excuse me, she refused treatment. case closed. there is no better country in the world for emergency health care. if its serious its immediate. we have wait lists for elective surgerys. i could not even wrap my head around the u.s system. the reason why obama's plan will not work is because hmo's and pharma companies make far too m uch profit. and we all know in america profit comes before people

  3. 103

Re: IvyLeagueBitch – stay home then fuckface. in our country we would treat u, and when we were done guess what yank NO BILL. can your country say the same. how many families go broke and end up homeless due too your wonderful first class health care system

  4. 104

Sorry, Perez, but you and the media are stirring up trouble for nothing. Trust me, I know. Epidural hematomas are almost always fatal. You fall and hit your head, even if she were to get an immediate CT scan, the bleeding doesn't show up for 3-4 hours, and by then, it's too late. These patients always feel fine, insist they don't need a doctor, some go to the ER, get their CT done, it's clear, they go home. By the time they get back to the hospital, it's too late. Whether it's Natasha Richardson, or just Joe Schmo, these sad patients almost always die. It's just a random tragedy, one that happens every single day, but usually not to someone famous, which is why you don't hear about it.

    Re: hedonismbot

well said. a bit worrying when people can't differentiate between a province and a city, seeing how huge Quebec actually is on a map.

  6. 106

Re: ScrewCanadaAndTheirSystem – i like how in your system if u have no money u get no care. i also like how u dump homeless patients on the streets still in their hospital gowns, my favourite part of your system is the high price of medicine, u should be very proud. i will agree if u have the best insurance money can buy or a politician or wealthy your system really works. for everyone else they pray every night that they stay healthy and do not have an accident

  7. 107

Re: eirefitz – LOL thanks, and agreed!!

  8. 108

i don't like canada's healthcare system. wait lists for "non-emergency" surgeries are months. for example if you need a hip replacement or repair a shoulder good luck on getting the operation done in under a year. wait lists are also common for typical screening with mri, cat, and the ilk. took me a couple months to get a biopsy on a nodule in my throat. yeah, people that say canada's healtcare system is the best, think again. we may not have to pay when we're in hospital or pay every time we visit the doctor for every little thing, but we pay in wait lists, lack of equipment, and lack of treatment options. it is shocking and unacceptable that there is no trauma helicopter in quebec. that province is huge, and so many remote areas. i understand there are a couple mediplanes (planes that transport patients), but you need a runway for them to land and there isn't one in mountain areas like tremblant. so yeah, when time has passed i hope liam sues the provincial government for not having the equipment. it is possible that second time the ambulance was called and if there had been a trauma helicopter to take her to montreal something might have been done. alas, we'll never know, but there really is no excuse to not have a fleet of trauma air transportation in quebec.

  9. 109

I don't understand why helmets are not compulsory on all slopes in all countries - I never board without one. That would have been a prevention.

Re: brandnew – Well said, brandnew, I completely agree with everything you said. But don't bother with this idiot - heaven forbid these days we provide essential healthcare services to everyone (wealthy or penniless) in our country for FREE. I have a lot of pride in Canada's healthcare system, and Perez, for you to imply that Canada's system is to blame for this accident is completely stupid; maybe you should check out what happens in the US to people without money, when they need emergency services. Remember when you used to talk about how much you loved Canada? Well we don't love you. Jerk.

Natasha Richardson refused treatment at three separate occasions. It is the law in Canada that medical treatment cannot be given to a person without their consent. Do some research Perez.

  11. sushi says – reply to this

    111

    Bottom line: She refused treatment.

I hate the fault finders. The resort did the right thing, she didn't want treatment not knowing there was a serious condition.

Tell the fucking lawyers to go chase a different ambulance.

  12. ps says – reply to this

    112

Re: Sweetmomma – Haha grow up. Is that the best you can do? No logical, coherent argument to go along with that? I wish I had the first class education you obviously did to come up with that lucid statement.

  13. 113

Some of your comments are completely ridiculous. If you don't like what Perez has to say, then WHY IN THE HOLY HELL ARE YOU ON HIS SITE? That's just stupid.

As for the story, that's so sad and unfortunate. Socialized health care doesn't cover all the nuts and bolts, and this is definitely an example. We live in a town of 100,000 and have three hospitals with three helipads and chopper service. Each hospital has their own life flight medevac, with crews on staff at all times for each. It seems sad and preposterous, considering I live in Mid-Missouri. Must shock all the big city yokels that a bunch of hicks would have that kind of technology…LOL

  14. 114

    Mr. Shitton,

I hope that you realize that this is not news anymore. This report you copied from other sites have been disclosed by the media the day after the tragic accident. You could not even report anything new that is news itself. Time to close shop. TWAT!!!

  15. 115

    Ain't socialized medicine great.

    as Obama says

Yes we Can!! (Ruin american medical care)

  16. 116

I think Perez should stop talking about this. Her death is being exploted by the media and it is unfortuate. She was all class and this accident has no inside story. It was a freak accident that lead to the death of a beautiful, stunning and talented woman. I am appauled by how sites, like this one, is using it for attention. RIP Natasha and I wish you never get mentioned on trash websites like this.

  17. 117

It seems like people are blaming it on the fact that she was in Montreal but they've obviously had to deal with this many times, they definitely do have good trauma centers. And also she moved again to New York, so that might've affected it too? Either way it really sucks what happened to her. RIP.

  18. 118

Once a person refuses treatment there is nothing they can do. If Richardson had accepted treatment after the fall then they might have been able to stabilize her and she might have lived. But she refused so they had to let her go. There is nobody to blame for this.

  19. 119

This is truly not a question of an inadequate health care system. As stated numerous times Natasha refused treatment. More importantly this tragedy could have been prevented if she had been wearing a helmet. I myself ski on a regular basis in the Canadian Rockies, previously without a helmet, but in light of these events I will be the first in line to purchase a helmet before I go out again. Skiing is dangerous which is why all ski passes have disclaimers printed on the back. Natasha's death is truly an unfortunate accident and hopefully her death will not be in-vain and people will think twice before saying no to a helmet at the ski hill.

  20. 120

um…..hate to break it to you Perez.

But if you are in the USA and are in the middle of nowhere (like MANY of our population is) you are too hours away from a trauma center and hours away from a neurosurgeon!

Don't you understand how HORRIBLE our healthcare system is? Even if you make it to a hospital w/a neurosurgeon or a trauma center, they may not treat you correctly. Ahh..I could go on & on about this.

    You are pretty clueless.

  21. 121

Luckily many lives will be most likely saved by Natasha's death.

First, there's the masses of people who are becoming aware that head injuries need to be taken very seriously. Whether you are skiing, snowboarding, bicycling, skateboarding, or motorcycling, wear a helmet! It's completely not worth risking death. It's a lot cheaper to buy a helmet than to pay off hospital bills too. If a medical professional tells you that you need to go to the hospital, don't argue.

Then there's also the affect that it will have amongst Quebec. I believe I I read somewhere that in all of Quebec, not just Montreal, that there isn't a medical emergency helicopter system in effect. I know that this will change though. I see any sane government re-evaluating their medical situation and see that the effect on tourism would be very significant if they didn't implement something. So hopefully we'll see helicopters there soon. Many lives could be saved if they just had at least 1 helicopter.

  22. MP says – reply to this

    122

Socialized medicine at its best, for Canada's 30 million citizens. The U.S. has 300 million citizens and can barely run the VA hospitals.

  23. 123

It was tragic that she passed and my thoughts and prayers go out to her entire family…HOWEVER… How dare you try to put the blame on Canada, SHE refused treatment initially and being a nurse myself it is the first few hours after a head injury that is the most critical, if she would have just gone with the ambulance the first time who knows what the end result would have been. It is really sad that in a time like this someone is looking for someone else to blame….it was an accident and I am sure the results would have been the same if it happened in a US state.
I would much rather been seen and taken care of in a CANADIAN hospital then an american one….. I've worked in the states and in my eyes everyone is just out for money, if you don't have it you don't get the proper treatment and if you do have it you go to the front of the line. Its just not right…JMHO

  24. 124

First of all, it was in Montreal and surrounding area, which is part of the Province of Quebec (there is also a Quebec City in the Province of Quebec, but this is not where it took place). Second of all, most places in Canada have medivac (helicopters providing medical evacuation to major trauma centres). They have medivac in Nova Scotia for heaven sake; I have no clue why a major centre like Montreal does not have it, other than to say that the Province of Quebec generally does whatever they want to do regardless of the rest of the country.

  25. 125

The most important thing is that the outcome in a talk-and-die scenario is almost always fatal, as the patient presents as feeling fine as much as hours after an accident. The fact that the staff stayed with her is actually quite incredible, given that she could walk and refused treatment. If you had a fall outside a major trauma centre, got up and said you were fine, and then 15 minutes later started showing symptoms, you still might die from it. The truth is we'll never know. Her refusal of treatment is highly significant but it doesn't mean it's her fault, as she probably felt as though she had suffered a minor injury at the time. Hindsight is 20-20. We will never know.

  26. 126

Having lived in both the U.S. and Canada (and I had a child in each country), the health care in Canada is far, far superior, every citizen gets it, and nobody has ever gone bankrupt because they got sick. Yes, we have wait times, but guess what? They have them in the U.S. too. A helicopter is definitely needed in Montreal. Canada has them everywhere else. Don't use this poor woman's tragedy in your politics.

  27. 127

Re: brandnew – I have had the same experiences within the Canadian health care system and much prefer it to the experiences I have had in the U.S.

  28. 128

Re: Steph99 – She was actually brain dead when the decision was made to fly to New York. Lenox Hill Hospital is not a major head trauma centre, so if there were any hope they would have chosen a different spot. The rumours are that they moved her because although it was established she was brain dead on March 17, her family didn't want her date of death to be Saint Patrick's Day (Neeson is Irish and very connected to the Irish American community, as are their sons). They thus decided that if they were going to keep her alive for another day, they would move her to New York as that is their home and her friends and family would be there for support.

  29. 129

Re: eternalcanadian – The wait times in the U.S. system are the same as in the Canadian system, unless you can afford to self-pay at private hospitals and clinics. For some procedures, the wait times are even longer in the U.S. And these are average wait times for all levels of insured and uninsured Americans. I suspect the wait times for medicaid patients in the U.S. are staggering.

  30. 130

YOU ARE A MORON, TMZ STARTED THIS SAME, PATHETIC ARGUEMENT 2 OR 3 DAYS AGO. YOU BOTH SHOULD BE SUED BY RICHARDSONS FAMILY, THE SKI RESORT AND THE COUNTRY OF CANADA. SHE DIED OF A TRAGIC, RARE ACCIDENT. SHE MIGHT OR MIGHT NOT HAVE HAD A WEAKNESS IN HER BLOOD VESSELS TO CAUSE THIS. SHE REFUSED CARE THAT MIGHT OR MIGHT NOT HAVE PICKED UP ON SOMETHING WRONG. THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A HELICOPTER AND AMBULANCE RIDE MIGHT OR MIGHT NOT HAVE SAVED HER. BUT YOU KNOW WHAT- SHE IS DEAD, WE DO NOT KNOW AND WE WILL NOT KNOW. AND TO SAY THAT HER DEATH WILL CAUSE HELICOPTERS TO BE SET UP-YOU ARE SAYING THAT CELEBRITY LIVES ARE MORE IMPORTANT THAN REGULAR PEOPLE-AGAIN THIS IS TRAGIC OCCURANCE- HASN'T ANYONE-MEANING YOU PEREZ, READ OF THE HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETE (I know that you look at the pics of hs wrestlers)THAT IS IN A MATCH, GOES HOME AND IS FOUND DEAD THE NEXT DAY WITH NO APPARENT INJURIES? PEOPLE JUST FOOLING AROUND, PERSON JUST BANGS HEAD, NOTHING BAD, BUT GETS CONFUSED AND DIES SHORTLY AFTER? WHEN I WAS A KID, IN A NEARBY SCHOOL, A GIRL HIT HER HEAD ON THE BATHROOM STALL AND DIED THE NEXT DAY-SAME THING. CRAP HAPPENS, SOMETIMES WITH OUT A GOOD EXPLAINATION. AND STOP COPYING TMZ-UNLESS IS GETS YOU IN TROUBLE AND SUED

  31. 131

I had a medical emergency in Costa Rica and the medical staff rushed me in like I was El Supremo. The hospital was spotless and the doctors were all USA educated. Mine came out of Johns Hopkins. We are talking Central America folks. They never asked for insurance. I did pay cash two days later and felt grateful. The USA constantly provides for poor people and illegal aliens. My sister is a nurse in Houston and on weekends almost ALL of the babies born are illegal aliens with NO insurance. That is why people in Houston pay HUGE property taxes. Those kids grow up and get free education and lunch money thanks to big hearted and dumbass Texans.

  32. 132

Re: justtfax – I have a family member who was taken by helicopter in a rural area to the major trauma centre, which was a five-hour highway drive from where he lived. Not rich, not a celebrity, just an ordinary guy in Canada.

  33. 133

How unbelievable is that - Montreal doesn't have a helicopter system for trauma victims??? My god, that's a travesty, not only for Ms. Richardson but for any trauma victim in Montreal. What are they living in the dark ages to not be able to provide something as necessary as helicopters for trauma patients? I used to live in Florida, which is in the dark ages for EVERYTHING and even THEY had such service available. For shame, Montreal, if this is so! How can you let your people down in such a manner?

  34. 134

WTF!?! it isnt montreal's trauma system that was at fault. she didn't take the ambualnce when she needed it, its her own stupid fault. its sad, but dont blame montreal, she was the one not wearing a helmet

  35. 135

I am living in Canada partly because we have universal medicare. I don't want to live in a country where you can die from an unfortunate combination of poverty and appendicitis. I am also absolutely sure you can get airlifted off Mont Tremblant if necessary. This had nothing to do with our weaknesses in our health care system. If she had been living in Polynesia a hundred years ago, she might have lived. They trepanned skulls frequently. How's that for "what if".

  36. 136

    1. Canada's health care system is one of the best in the world
    2. She refused treatment
    3. She should have been been wearing a helmet

Don't blame the Canadian healthcare system, blame her bad judgement.

  37. 137

Not to sound like a bitch because I am not "blaming the victim" everyone would have said the same thing, but Ms Richardson twice refused treatment, when the paramedics saw her, they said she HAD to come to the hospital, until she was deemed not able to decide for herself, she was the one who chose not to go. They only thing that would have helped was municipal FD or cops ordering her to go. No, this isn't "her fault" any normal person says they don't want to go to the hospital. What should change is that feeling. If you hit your head, you go, end of story.

  38. 138

Re: **LondonHockeyGurL** – Yeah, sure, do some reasearch before playing know-it-all! Montreal is in the province of Quebec!!! I should know, I live here!

  39. 139

And fuckers, we do have medical helicopters here too! But Mt Tremblant is a small village, thus it is not available there! That's all!! You're just of bunch of ignorants hicks! At least I have free healthcare and I won't be stuck paying for some of the neccessities I need, unlike you! You're fucked!

  40. 140

It really sounds like Ms Richardson probably had what is called a "lucid interval" before collapsing. Typical for this type of injury, she felt find and seemed okay for a while. Her injury, had it been caught as the blood was spreading, would have most likely caused signficant brain damage or death, regardless of the treatment timeline. It is easier than most people think, to significantly damage the brain with a bonk in the correct spot. The brain has so many blood sources and is encased inside the skull, giving it no room for swelling.

  41. 141

If Canada wants to have all of their ski resorts that don't require helmets then they need to have proper medical care available when people get hurt. Its absoultely ridiculous!!

Can't WAIT for the U.S. to have the same health care system as Canada. Then maybe all the people here looking for their free handouts will understand the system we have now is just fine. If people would get up off their asses and get a job, they too could afford good health care!

  42. 142

I bet we born with an internal clock that will STOP when the time is due. No hospital, doctor or helmet will spare you from your destiny. That was her day to die…Even if she would not had an accident..She could has being is her house, watching tv in total tranquility and she still will be dead today.-

Let's accept the death of this beautiful woman, pray for her soul and just go on living. Remember, we can't scape our final day on earth, so we better enjoy while it last!

  43. 143

National Health Care. I lived overseas using national health care system for 15 years. Yes, I'm alive but jeezz that system was weird. Pills handed out without any names of the medicine types. Corner doctors who get their license to practice because their father had done so….not good.

  44. 144

biggest mistake was no baylife helicopter(we call in my area). She left one hospital @ 3:47pm and didn't arrive until 7:00pm to the other trauma center! omg! our emergency helicopters would have been there in less than 20 min. if it was far! I hope these places in canada get sufficient helicopters! I rather have the best of care than free care!

  45. 145

Re: Cleopatra – dumbass, they died instantly! Michael kennedy was brain dead already! They both weren't wearing helmets! America has the best hospitals! it's a known fact you ignornant twat! Mayo Clinic is the best care you can receive in the world!

  46. 146

Re: ChantellyLace – emergency helicopters in my area of florida are always used to fly anyone in need to a trauma center! It doesn't matter if they are rich or poor. Anyone in trauma can be airlifted to any hospital!

  47. 147

1.The accident happen in Mont-Trembant which is a city of Quebec. The last hospital she stayed at in Canada was Sacre-Coeur which is in Montreal, Quebec ! Yes Montreal is a city and Quebec is a province as well a capital! Montreal IS IN Quebec ! That said, her instructor asked her to wear a helmet and she refused as many people do, including me because we think nothing can happen. Second of all, she refused the assistance of paramedics not only once but twice ! In this case the blame should not be put on the medical system of Canada nor On Mrs. Richardson.

    -R.I.P Natasha Richardson-

  48. 148

Well, actually our healthcare system works pretty good. Its not perfect but at least you dont have to pay an arm and a leg to see a doctor if you are sick which means everyone has the right to be healthy regardless of their income. Now unfortunately Natasha refused the treatment and care advised due to a head injury. Concussions are serious business and should not be ignored. The only thing that could have prevented this incident is better education and awareness about the importance of wearing a lid when on the slopes and getting checked out and monitored after a head injury.

  49. 149

I'm an American and i get free healthcare! I'm on SSDI & i receive free Medicare & Medicaid!!!! I do not pay for my doctor's visits or tests! I'm getting a hysterectomy & it's all paid for! A lot of Americans get free, good health care!

  50. 150

This is tragic, but the people who bash Canada's health care system are in the wrong. Do your research. For example, Timothy Stoltzfus Jost, a very well respected health care law and policy analyst is an excellent researcher who has compiled comparables of the two health care systems and overall the Canadian health care system is more cost efficient, covers more people, and more effective in treating most illnesses as compared across the same criteria.

  51. 151

    Socialized medicine kills.

  52. 152

The Canadian health care system has major problems. I know first hand. Their Emergency Room Doctors are not at the hospital or usually hospital ready at all Canadian hospitals in British Columbia. There is no medevac system in British Columbia either and their ambulance service is almost non existent. The doctors when I was injured there were from England on an internship. Please pray you never get injured in Canada. Socialized Medicine in action. RIP Natasha :(

  53. 153

    SO SAD.

  54. 154

Finally us Montrealers might be able to have what taxpayers have been refusing to pay for! In any case, there is not much that can be done when people refuse medical care; no matter where you live. This tragedy should be a lesson to all of us.

  55. 155

they are too busy with their horse-slaughter over there. My gorgeous thouroughbred colt was victim of those a-holes….and OBVIOISLY I did not my horse to end up there but was unfortunately lied to and misled.
Quebec sucks and I hope that you choke on your horsemeat!
God Bless the good people xo

  56. 156

Re: ScrewCanadaAndTheirSystem – And you know this because you are a doctor who works in a Buffalo NY hospital? Doubt it.. just uneducated comments. Why would someone from Canada with free health care cross the border to pay for it? Unless it is specialized treatments that the food and drug regulation in Canada will not approve and the USA will, AND someone from the USA would do the same thing if a hospital in the U.K offered treatment that could be their last and only option, risky or not. And stop with the pride about your shitty country?? Get your head out of your ass and stop bashing other countries you know nothing about.. ignorant asshole!

  57. 157

Re: IvyLeagueBitch – Hopefully you don't need a krispy Kreme donut while you are over there as well ..because them Canada folks don't have those either. Fucktard..

  58. 158

Re: CORNDOGMAN – Yes you are right.. all the doctors and paramedics in Canada where too busy hanging out in Igloos eating Phil-doh's horse, so they called up a doctor from England to attend to you. Another fucktard..

  59. 159

Re: Sweetmomma – P.S .. So does your momma

  60. 160

    Re: eternalcanadian
There's no way he could sue. She refused treatment, therefore she was liable, not the paramedics.

She refused treatment in Canada, she would've refused in the US or anywhere else.

So honestly blaming the Canadian health care system - which most of us don't know all about considering most people here live in the US and have never been to a hospital in Canada - is pointless, because the same thing would've happened anywhere.

  61. 161

Re: Pervert – Fuck You! You're using my avie asshole!!! Bitch Boy!

  62. 162

as a critical care professional that's as good as it f-ing gets. stop looking for loopholes. it was a terrible accident and everyone did the best they could!

  63. 163

wtf perez. you stupid ass douchebag. SHE REFUSED TREATMENT. everyone around her was clearly more concerned about her health than she was. an ambulance was called which she refused. the ski instructor never left her side and management called an ambulance again, when they saw she was in distress. PERHAPS SHE DID NOT WANT THE UNWARRANTED ATTENTION BY THE LIKES OF YOU AND THE PAPS HAD SHE BEEN RUSHED TO HOSPITAL. pure speculation on my part, of course. thing is speculation will never get you the real answers ahole. so shut the fuck up. GET BACK TO STEALING STORIES AND LIVING OFF THE HARD WORK OF OTHERS.

  64. 164

Re: LaDiva – ah, such fond memories of your childhood. daddy taught you well. did you or your father get on all fours and suck it till it bled? i'm thinking your daddy taught you how to share and took turns. seriously, who raised you, you sick fuck.

  65. 165

Hold on a minute. This woman REPEATEDLY refuses treatment, and you think that the trauma system in Montreal needs to be reevaluated? How about Natasha's untimely death setting the wheels in motion for a reevaluation of idiots who think they know more than medical professionals do?

Her death was tragic, and I'm sorry it happened - but if someone refuses medical care, you can't blame the system.

  66. 166

Perecito, ya callate y deja en paz a Montreal. Se entiende q ella no quiso usar casco o sea…no todo es a 100 % la culpa de montreal.

  67. Dargy says – reply to this

    167

Most deaths could have been prevented, for every Natasha there are thousands more passing each day. In hindsight we know everything but in reality people still die……sadly that's life

  68. 168

Montreal doesn't have helicopters because it's not necessary especially for a 52 mile trip. It takes about 40 minutes to get from one hospital to the other and can't land where ever you want with an helicopter. AND she didn't want medical care at first so nobody is to blame on this one. How many people died in the states because they can't pay for a doctor? Here it's free so if you need it use it please.

So sad. Leave it to the French Canadians to fuck things up. They prolly don't have a medivac system with helicopters because they are arrogant assholes who think their way of doing things is correct. The French are idiots when it comes to emergency care - this is the same situation as with Princess Diana. Instead of rushing her to the hospital right away the paramedics tried to stabilize her at the car accident scene. That's not how you do it!! The key is to get the victim to the hospital ASAP - minutes count and make a difference and tragically that seems to be the situation here. Ms. Richardson would probably still be alive, albeit probably after having emergency surgery, had the Quebecoise douchebags had a proper emergency medical system in place!

Come now she fell and burst a blood vessel which blood filled the brain. No matter what they did she was effectively on road to brain dead and death.Give it a rest and let her be in peace. It is tragic without some fat idiot celebrity gossiper trying to make mischief and blame games.

  71. 171

I heart Mount Tremblant…. such an amazing ski resort. This is scary, could happen to anyone.

  72. 172

It sounds more like there was a lapse in her judgement as opposed to a lapse in her care. Always go to the hospital, better safe than sorry.

  73. 173

Ah yes! I was waiting for this. You cocksuckers HAD to point a finger and blame Canada. IT must be great to put down the entire world, it seems to make the US look that much better I guess. So let me get this straight - she would have survived if she was hurt in the states, even though she refused treatment? But is she was poor would she have received the same treatment? If she did, she would have been given a bill that would have her in debt the rest of her life. I wouldn't say that is a better system.

  74. 174

Sometimes things like this happen. It's life. Everyone has to die at one time or another. Skiing is a dangerous sport. Remember that.

    Re: **LondonHockeyGurL**
For your information, Mont-Tremblant is a city in the province of Québec !!

Re: Snickers – RACIST, HOW WONDERFUL YOU MUST FEEL, FRENCH-BASHING AND SPITTING ON QUÉBÉCOIS PEOPLE. IS IT ANY WONDER QUÉBEC WOULD LIKE TO BE A SOVEREIGN COUNTRY AND HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH RACISTS SUCH AS YOU…… HOW PROUD OF YOURSELF YOU MUST BE !!!!!!!!

#1 … Canada DOES have Krispy Kreme … part of our master plan to end up as obese, lazy and in as dire need of healthcare as Americans.

#2 … The unfortunate thing here is that someone didn't INSIST that she needed medical attention, despite her assurances. She was probably just being a polite & lovely British lady who didn't want to cause anyone any problems. A patient with a head injury - no matter how minor it seems - is not in any position to determine what level of care they require.

It's too bad that the story has now become about people going tut-tut and shaking their fingers at everyone possible. It was an accident - and those happen. If it had happened to a non-celeb, we wouldn't even be talking about this.

Re: p!nkrocks – Hey sport, so you believe the usa have the best hospitals in the world ? How do you explain the death of Andy Warhol who died on 22 February 1987 following a routine gall bladder operation in a NYC hospital ? Waiting for your explanation. Pretty frightening. Plus do you know that Canadians live longer than americans ? Think about it !

  79. 179

you know what…her family and everyone who loved her are really hurting right now do you really think they need people questioning like this NO! they do not! if's but's maybe's will NOT change anything please the family and friends have to come to tearms with this now please lewt her and them be at peace now *~

  80. 180

Come on, people….enough! Let this family live in peace, starting from now, will you?
    Jesus!
They all know, already, how much WE CARE and how DEEPLY Natasha will be kept in our minds&hearts!

Socialized Healthcare has kept me alive. An asthmatic with Chronic Sinusitus and on hefty steriods and other asthma and sinus medications, I couldn't afford american Healthcare. My medicines are almost 200-300 dollars a month and that's JUST ME. My family are all asthmatics. I'm due to get surgery on my sinuses in a year or so. It's a really long wait time, I know… but it's FREE, like the medications I use while I wait for it.

My mother used to make almost 20 dollars an hour at her non-private facility. Then privatization of senior homes was made legal overnight, her seniority gone from her position, she had no were to go. She ended up in a privatized facility making 13 dollars an hour.

So… I'm all for our healthcare. I know its not perfect, I also know I can die from it, but I believe in it, because no one's healthcare is perfect.

  82. 182

Natasha's death could not have been prevented. Early on in my medical training we were presented with this "talk and die" syndrome". You hit your head, you're lucid for about an hour, and then the bleed in your brian explodes. She would have had the right doctor there to know this, she would have had to agree to go the hospital immediaely for a CT scan, and the bleed would have had to be in an area where the neurosurgeon could reach it without making her a vegetable anyway. Let this be a lesson learned, if you hit your head and there isn't a bump or bruising on the outside, most likely it's on the inside of your brain. Seek medical help immediately. And for God's sake will everyone PLEASE start using helmets. You just never know.

  83. 183

Still up for Universal Health Care? THIS is what happens. The care you receive isn't as good because everyone is getting half ass care for free! I have a friend in Toronto. He had a concussion and was not scheduled for a CT scan for WEEKS because of the patient load. WEEKS is a long time when it comes to a head injury. I'm not saying that our health care system is the greatest now, but universal care isn't the answer!

  84. 184

I'm very sorry she passed away, this is a terrible tragedy. In defence of our health care system and the staff at Tremblant, it sounds as though she was given and offered treatment right away. She fell down at the bottom of a beginner hill, it's not like she was doing a tree run on a double diamond. Who could have known (including herself) how much trauma she had actually sustained. Rest in Peace. If this can at least help one other person, we should all be wearing helmuts when we ski/board. I was in Tremblant that same weekend & did not wear a helmut. I guess I was lucky.

  85. 185

  86. 186

LET'S NOT LIVE OUR LIVES WISHING WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN, SHOULD HAVE BEEN, OR MIGHT HAVE BEEN, HUH?

    THE WOMAN IS DEAD. ENOUGH!

LET HER REST IN PEACE AND LET'S LEAVE THIS SUBJECT ALONE, PLEASE.
    __________________________________________________________________

  88. 188

How dare you blame the system? SHE REFUSED TREATMENT! That is no ones fault but hers. Now if they had forced her to go to the hospital you know they would get their asses sued. THIS IS BULLSHIT.

  89. 189

Its ridiculous that they blame Montreal when the real situation here is she refused treatment for HOURS! These hours would have prevented her death. Its not the medical system thats out of wack..

  90. 190

What killed Natasha Richardson was her refusal to go to the hospital initially.

  91. 191

haha…canada has sufficient health care. how can you compare it to the states? you have 'super-fan-fucking-tastic' hospitals for trauma because of all the fucking homicides/murders/shootings/gang activity that happens in your country…WOOHOO for crime!
