Equal means like in quality, nature, or status. Civil unions can be equal, or like in quality nature of status. You don't NEED to redefine marriage to have equal rights. To say that then you are using propaganda or misinformation.
Propaganda ideas, facts, or allegations spread deliberately to further one's cause or to damage an opposing cause. If you don't want to redefine marriage it doesn't mean you don't want equal rights. Equal is of the same measure or quantity which mean civil unions can EQUAL marriage.
