The Scene That Was Written For Shatner in the new Star Trek Film!
Filed under: Film Flickers > William Shatner
The writers of the new Star Trek have just revealed that in an early draft of the film's script, the series' original Captain Kirk, William Shatner, was to make a cameo!
"We did write a Shatner scene," writer Roberto Orci explains. "And we were ultimately split internally. We didn't want it to be a gimmick; we wanted to really bring him back in the right way."
Orci's writing partner, Alex Kurtzman, reveals the set up:
"Elder Spock tells young Spock, 'I couldn't tell you the truth about what's happening, because if I had, I would have robbed you of the benefit of realizing the greatness that you and Kirk will achieve together — and the amazing friendship that you'll have. You had to discover that for yourself, and I couldn't get in the way of that.'
And in our original version, younger Spock says, 'I'm still not sold.' Elder Spock said, 'Well, don't take my word for it,' and he handed him a little disc — a DVD, really — that projected a hologram, and then he walked away. And the hologram was of Kirk. It would've been Shatner.
It was a 'happy birthday' message [with Kirk saying], 'This is the last time I'm going to be able to wish you happy birthday, so I want to tell you how much you've meant to me and how amazing it was that we had all these adventures together.'"
So what was the problem???
Oh, only that Shatner's character kicked the the bucket in 1994's Star Trek: Generations!!
Even though the hologram would have pre-dated Captain Kirk's death, Orci found the storyline too unbelievable. "Because Kirk died in the movies — he died in canon — it was very hard to come up with a way to bring him back in the movie that didn't feel contrived," Orci revealed.
Do U wish they kept Shatner's cameo in the script???

all i can think of is a priceline commercial
Re: Granny Panties –
My feelings exactly. Looks like he's asking to be beamed up because he can't find any Johnny Walker.

He deserved to be in the movie in some capacity….jesus..he will always be Captain Kirk after all.
They wanted this film to be embraced by the "trekker" audience, but they totally alienated them when the producers couldn't (and now obviously wouldn't) let Shater contribute in some manner.
If nothing else it should have been him at the end that said the lines:, "Space…the final frontier…"

TURD BURGLER! WTF IS WRONG WITH YOUR POS SITE!!! THIS FUCKIN' THING IS SLOWER THAN TWO SNAILS FUCKIN'!!! OK BITCH, I JUST WANT TO LET YOU KNOW SO YOU CAN GO BACK TO TONGUEING TEDDY'S BALLOON KNOT NOW!!! MY CAPS LOCK KEY IS LOUD, RIGHT KANYE YA GAYFISH?
Really, the movie wouldn't have benefitted from the old bloated, fart.
I am a major Star Trek fan and I love Shatner and co. but no, that cameo sucked. I'm glad they cut that scene because it would have been terrible. Ironically, since the timeline of Star Trek history has been altered, who's to say that Shatner's Kirk is dead in this version? Maybe he can make an appearance in the next movie.
how about a show where kirk fucks an alien, gets her preggers, is forced to settle down and raise the mutant, then is attacked by miss california for going against god's word
Very smart to leave him out! It would have been very cheesy had the writers put him in.
They should have worked harder to figure out a way for him to be in the film or at least in the sequels to come. If they are going to let Chris Pine use mannerisms and character traits that WILLIAM CREATED, then they need to show their appreciation. He is one of the reasons anything came out of that show.
absolutely not, it was too contrived
I want everyone reading this site to know that Perez Hilton is not a representative of the gay right's movement. Too many people have worked far too long and far too hard, and sacrificed way too much - in some cases their lives - for one person's self-aggrandizement to throw all of that in reverse. If anyone would care to have a healthy, intelligent debate about legalizing gay marriage, without fear of being called a "dumb bitch" or having your family maligned, I am available.
I think he should have been the one to voice the end lines. It would have been fitting.
Re: eatmoremonkey – Lord knows you wouldn't want to fuck with the integrity of this made-up shit! DORK!
uh, they should have, and could have kept it. i mean hell…writers killed off spock, and then in the next movie brought him back to life and got him from a whole different planet. they could've made it work.
I wish they hadn't killed him in such a stupid ass way in Star Trek: Generations, then they wouldn't have had that problem.
Comon Shatner You Should Of Took The Gig Man Now Tell me What Have U Done For Me Lately Nuttin At All U Would Of Got Paid And Be In The Sequel Shape Up Man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He's an amazing actor, though. Especially in Boston Legal. I think he should've been in the movie. The Trekkies would've enjoyed it.
They should have at least had Shatner read the epilogue "Space… the final frontier," etc. That would have capped a great movie.
No! The movie is really good .. just the way it is .. even though I like William Shatner a lot.
Shatner has become a character of a character playing Shatner playing Kirk. It would not have fit to bring him back … it would have felt campy.
Re: Granny Panties – That was my FIRST thought when I saw this picture of William Shatner: an aging alcoholic. He's bloated; red-faced (particularly his nose) and splotchy. Somehow it doesn't surprise me…
Hell yeah
Re: blasastter – I was thinking the exact same thing. While he may be dead in the other timeline, it this alternative timeline, he might well have survived. Actually, In this alternative timeline, who is to say that Picard exists? Without Picard out of the picture, he never would have summoned Kirk to help with that whole nexux thing and so, he would presumably still live. Just a thought.
Shatner is fatter, older and balder than he was 10 years ago. I would've made no sense!
They have the nerve to say they wanted to stick to Canon? They blew the Canon sky high! Asswipes. Unbelievable.
The WHOLE idea that James T. Kirk could not have been worked into any variation/episode of a new StarTrek movie is BULL BULL BULL!!! It's "SciFi" and there are no real limits (Oh he was killed off/blah blah blah). The guy is what "StarTrek" is all about. We all grew up with 'Kirk/Spock/Scotty/etc., and it doesn't take a genious to visualize a way to write him in! So it's all politics/hollywood drama/lack of vision that Shatner isn't a part of the film:( Very very sad that he isn't on film in the new movie, nothing less than a very missed opportunity:( The movie will do great, I will see it, as well as those of you who love the vision that is "StarTrek", but what a wasted opportunity…
Nope… I thought the movie was perfect the way it was. I'm glad they didn't bring him back exactly for the reasons they said. He died in Generations… and it just would've been… I dunno.. lame for lack of a better word
William Shitner looks extremely constipated. He needs a colonic.
it would have been cool to see shattner but not like that.
Maybe a hologram of a cake that kirk could have jumped out of would have been better…..
Re: Granny Panties – Yeah and what the hell happened to his nose? Paint it red and you've got Bozo
I think they made a good choice. At some point they had to stop contriving cameos for him.
BE RETIRED ALREADY!
old news… this was on google 2 days agao
old news..this was on google 2 days ago
That totally would have worked! I wish Shatner could have had the chance to be in it.
I love Kirk … check out this site … www.boticca.com
I don´t need to see Mr. Shatner in any new Star Trek because he will be for ever MY CAPTAIN KIRK, the very hero of my youth, a big and good part of my life, a beautiful and immortal memory for me.
Since God bless Mr. Shatner every single day of his life, doesn't matter for me whether people want or not to get him in any scene.
Only if it made sense. If they screw around with contrived timelines, it ruins things.
Of course it would be great to see Shatner in the new film… but he died.
Absolutely!!! That would've rocked!
I wish they'd kept the cameo in. It would have made things a hell of a lot more interesting.
HE ALWAYS LOOKS LIKE HE'S READY TO BLOW UP.
spock died in the movies too, KHAN!!!!!!!!!!!
First of all…it would be illogical for the "young" Spock to say to the "old" Spock…
"I'm still not sold"….
That…would make the "young" Spock a DUMB FUCK…which…he is not…and NEVER was…
Thank you…
Also…sorry to let you "Trekkies" down…
But Star Trek…is and will always be…
ABOUT SPOCK!!!
The problem with that role, wasn't that it was not a good part (because it was) - the problem was that Shatner didn't want a "cameo" role - he wanted to be in the movie as much as anyone else.
.
.
So instead of making the movie more about the "old guys" - they chose to just scrap him altogether.
.
.
This movie was JUUUUST fine without him IMO.
Re: katgirl476 –
Ah…yes Spock DID die…"KHAN"…however…due to the Genesis project…he was bought back to life…
Seeing that the "Genesis" project existed and they didn't use that to bring Kirk back…that should let you know what the people who RUN the Star Trek franchise thinks about Mr. Shatner…
LET IT GO!!!
Re: Granny Panties –
yes
I would have loved to have seen him in the movie! That was missing. I missed it!
YES.
uuuuuuuuummmmmmmmmmmmmm
THIS is REALLY OLD news to Shatner fans. I mean back to when he was talking about being told there was a part for him in the movie. Then that Abrams character started the movie with SPock and said not a word to SHatner..DIRTY and STUPID deal. At the time, I was refusing to go see when it came out; but my son took me to see it and I have to admit they did a great job of keeping the personalities of our beloved characters inline and "little James Tiberius Kirk was a wild march hare…it has those moments its hilarious when they make comments to ea other that hits home with us Classic trekkies/trekkers so it was a surprise for me; though Im still baffled WHY he did that to Shatner. He should have been honored to still have a very healthy and within Shatner to grace his film. ANd NO I don't see the alcoholic and I WOULD. He is in MY position…he married one once. (NOT the current).
IT DOESNT MATTER that Kirk died in that other film -geez they were right on the Nexus..ANYTHING could be changed from that timeline swerve. THAT is NOT really a problem. IF they can bring ppl back to ilfe on SOAPS, and they do, surely they can bring Kirk back - remember, he always said he would DIE ALONE - he wasn't alone..and again the Nexus was there and influencing things. EASY Out.
Re: Lala11_7 – OH BULL…its about them ALL, but esp KIRK and Spock, then Dr. McCoy…and the Star Trek franchise LOVED Shatner/Kirk…he was much handsomer than this Pine guy..sorry. But they did a good job. true. But Star Trek ISNT ST without Kirk…OR Spock.
JJ Abrams ISNT T H E Star Trek franchise. He's basically a babe in the woods in this "franchise".
And a not so smart one. He could have worked out and giving Kirk the same kind of roll he gave Nimoy. Shatner said he would have LOVED to be in it and did NOT insist on a HUGE roll. He said he just wanted to be a part of it. And I'll cont to think Abrams stupid for letting that opportunity pass.
Maybe the entire universe is in a time loop. The universe has been recurring, and will continue to recur in a self-similar form an infinite number of times. 'This life as you now live it and have lived it, you will have to live once more and innumerable times more.'
I always thought it was a big mistake to kill off Kirk in that Next Generation movie. As for the cameo, it would have been bad, and I'm glad they didn't include it in the movie. I wish they had written a better script, and then that would have solved everything, because then they could have probably included Kirk. The whole jumping through time plot wasn't so great, was not explained well, and it didn't make a whole lot of sense. I can see why they did it. The writers have taken liberties to change past events. As a result, the writers/director now have the freedom to take Star Trek in a new direction, change up the characters a bit, and create new stories. I just think they could have written it so much better. They focused more on re-introducing the characters and telling the story of how they came together as a crew, rather than the actual plot of the movie. And the villain was LAME.
Still…I enjoyed most of the movie and it was nice seeing Leonard Nimoy again. Didn't care too much for the new Spock. The new Kirk is likable and I'm glad the actor didn't try to impersonate Shatner. I enjoyed the rest of cast too.
They were using the concept of parallel realities in the movie. It would have been easy to insert William Shatner in this alternative reality. In theory, any action can result in an infinite number of consequences, so Captain Kirk's death could also have been played out in many different ways; including the possibility that he was still alive in an alternate reality, as the movie indicated the young Kirk's father lived a long life in an alternate reality. If they had wanted to write William Shatner in, they could have done it, and they should have. He's 75 now, and it might have been the last chance to see him again in a Star Trek movie.
