Finally, a Slumdog Millionaire star catches a break!

Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail lost his home in Mumbai only a few weeks ago after 30 shacks and shanties in his village were destroyed as part of the city's "slum demolition drive."

Well, the young actor is homeless no more!

Ismail will be moving with his family into a 180 square foot flat which was gifted by the Maharashtra Housing and Development Authority in the coming days.

Thank goodness!

The tiny tot took a tour of his new abode on Tuesday (above). And he sure looks happy!

Something like this makes me realize how much luckier Americans are than so many others in the world. I sometimes think my 800 square foot apartment is too small, and I live alone. It really puts things into perspective.

  2. 2

180 sq ft? my god, that makes us all look like pigs.

  3. 3

    Finally! He deserves it :)

  4. 4

180 square feet? Seriously? Is that a misprint? I have a small place and my living room is bigger than that!!

Re: ClaraB – I agree completely. We are damn lucky.

I have to wonder though…there were 30 other shacks demolished at the same time, which I'm sure held many family members in each. Where are they? Are they still homeless?

  6. 6

180 sq. ft.? That has to be a typo. That is about as big as a bathroom.

  7. 7

180 sq ft? My bathroom is bigger….that still sucks.

I hope the little girl will be next.

  9. 9

OMG and you're not commenting on the fact a whole family is suppose to live in a 180 square ft apartment? U're such a fucking insensitive fucktard Perez… They don't even show the inside… fucking idiot you are. Way to chase after a story! Someone ought to put you in that apartment for ever asshole.

Re: ClaraB – U guys aren't lucky you're retards…. people in the hood live in 180 sq ft apartments, sort your own shit out before you think you're lucky. Bombay has the nicest apartments in the world… you and your high and mighty idea that you're better… you ain't.

  11. 11

Holy shit, that is as big as my bathroom! Wow! Talk about taking things for granted! I was complaining over living in a 1500sq ft. house. I am now grateful for that.

  12. 12

Most hotel rooms are bigger, but it's better than being on the street.

  13. 13

180 sq ft is the size of a parking space. Wow. And Bombay is the colonial name. The city is Mumbai.

  14. 14

boy did the makers of that film really fuck over these kids. how much did this film gross. these people should be ashamed of themselves.

  15. 15

I am so happy he and his family have a decent home now. we think we have it bad in America, but we actually have it good compared to most.

  16. 16

Ever been on a cruise? An average cabin on a cruise is 180 square feet. Now think about how a whole family can fit into that??

  17. 17

There is saying…your biggest problem is probably someone else's blessing. Think about. Pay attention to how others are living not just in your country but around the world. There are those who would consider anything place where their life is not being threatended by daily bombs, gunfire and a extremist corrupt goverment where human, never mind women's rights, are almost non existent. It could always be better but it can almost always be worse.

  18. 18

im pretty certain that is a misprint. they use the metric system in india (god americans are dumb :p). it is quite likely 180 square metres.

  19. 19

Maybe Perez, who always has so many typos in his "stories," meant 180 square meters??

  20. 20

YAY!! This is the best new ive heard all day. Good for them. Now I hope they help that little girl….

  21. 21

aw! he's so cute! but 180 square feet? its almost heartbreaking to see his happy face when in reality, that space is so small. it really puts an interesting perspective on how expecting and greedy americans are…but this talented boy deserves it. hopefully, he'll gain more prizes in the future…. :)

  22. 22

I can totally smell it from here.

  23. 23

wow, i bet all the american child stars are jealous of the 180 sq ft that the INDIAN GOVERNMENT is giving these slumdog stars. i wonder where boyle is in all this???

  24. 24

ONG I once lived in a homeless shelter and my room was bigger that 180 square feet!!!

  25. 25

Sure wish those boys were not on that tall roof.

  26. 26

    WHAT ABOUT THE GIRL RUBINA??

  27. 27

awww…well, at least he's got a roof over his head. and so many of us can be so ungrateful and look at that, he looks so happy! *tear* :)

  28. 28

180 square meters is 1937.5 square feet.

  29. 29

FINALLY …I HOPE THINGS GO THAT WELL FOR THE GIRL…I THINK HER NAME WAS RUBINA

  30. 30

Read the Indian times or indian newspapers. It is only 180 square feet. People in North America do take it for granted.

Also realize he has to live there with his family. But in a country with over 1 billion people what do you expect.

But the difference is, here even homeless guys would be offended to be asked to live in a 180 sq. foot room but this kid who had only known about living in a rundown shack on the street is gleaming with pride.

Why? Because at least he now has a permanent place to call home.

  31. 31

Gee it looks like some block right out of Bolshevistic era of Communist Russia.Make you think doesn't it… how over privileged we all are in west.? That is so tiny… and there are about 10 to go and live in it with him.

  32. 32

Good…. maybe if he had been treated better by the millionares who made the movie he wouldn't have to be given the home by the Maharashtra Housing and Development Authority.

  33. 33

Good…. maybe if he had been treated better by the millionares who made the movie he wouldn't have to be given the home by the Maharashtra Housing and Development Authority. *shrug*

  34. 34

Re: cockface – Don't make comment about stories that you know nothing about.. Danny Boyle has been trying to sort out accomodation for both the kids - he has been out to Mumbai twice since the film finished.. Bear in mind its no good buying them massive hollywood style apartments that they can't afford the upkeep on.. He set up a trust for them both when the film finished to make sure that they would be educated.. In February the Indian government said they would re-house them but nothing has been done until now - 2 days after Danny Boyle bought the first flat for Ali he is still sorting something out for Rabina. How many Hollywood producers do you think would do the same thing - Fuck all thats how many..Just Wait…

  35. 35

how cute is this kid…..look at his smile…….it takes so little for children to show joy….we can all learn something from them. what is that saying…..'the child is the father of the man' how true!!!!!

  36. 36

There is something very wrong here… the adult stars win Oscars and are treated like new hollywood royalty, while the children flounder about back in India, with one parent trying to sell his daughter and the other moving with his family into… a 180 square foot apartment??? That is smaller than any studio I have ever seen in Toronto, even my friends who have places with kitchen in same room, close to 300 sq ft… those are not proper conditions for a family to live in. Why can't the producers give both of these families nice houses? It is the least they can do after all the awards the movie won and all the money the movie has made and will make.

  37. 37

    Good for him.
    Congrats to the family.
    .

  38. 38

What a dose of reality, when 180 square feet can be cause for celebration — everyone of us with a better situation should sit back and think about how fortunate we really are!

  39. 39

180 sq feet? Thats the size of my kitchen!

  40. 40

Because a million dollar Oscar budget can't afford a place for this kid and his family in a place that is larger than a luxurious prison cell. This shit is disgusting. Explain to me why these kids aren't living it up in apartments that at least have more than one room! They made millions off of Slumdog, and no one can shell out a few measly grand to give these children somewhere appropriate to live?

  41. 41

Excuse me? 180 square feet for a family?? I'm sure it's better than his shack but Jesus that's small!

  42. 42

THEY NEED TO GET THAT LITTLE BOY OFF THAT ROOF. STUPID ASSES.

  43. 43

180 Square Foot ? I read about these condos……….how it will take an average work like ten years to be able to afford these TINY PLACES. But it's better than a shack, right ? 180 Square feet ? I thought my old condo was small at 650 square feet (and it was - for one person, no less).

  44. 44

    What a cute kid.
    And what a great story.
    Thank you, Perez!

  45. 45

waooooooooooooo poor kid… i just dont understand why is he there, that movie made a lot of money. they shouldve givin him n his family a nice & safe home!

  46. 46

    Dear all,

He may have a tiny apartment now, but its just the beginning. The kid's going to do very well in future, he's become quite the busy celebrity in India.

That smile is priceless, having your own little flat is so much better than living in a shanty with the fear of being bulldozed anytime.

180 sq. feet? That about 13.4' X 13.4 feet. My tiny little home office is bigger than that!
