I totally agree. Too many people have kids just because they think that's what they are "suppose" to do due to pressure from family and society. That's just crazy.
People make the choice to have children or not have children for the worst reasons nowadays. Many people are bitter against those who urge them to have children, and choose not to because they feel they're 'giving the finger' to those who would rather they reproduce. Then there are those that have children that are only doing it because it's 'the thing to do', like they're supposed to do it during some part of their life. The children I've experienced that grow up in such families tend to have an inert emptiness about them, and that's just one of the problems.
Have a kid, don't have a kid. That's fine. What motivates you, though, to pick one thing over the other should be evaluated strongly before making a final decision.

Kids are great… screw her. I have two daughters and maybe there were times when raising kids is rough, but now that they are older.. it's the best thing and we have great times together. When you're younger, you may not miss having children, but when you get older and you're all alone …. then you'll miss the fact that you never had kids.

This is 2009, women have choices. Some of us realize the world is overpopulated and if we care to have kids we can adopt. Oh and to people that would say, "who's going to take care of you when you're old?" 1) no one can guarantee that your adult child will have anything to do with you in your elder years. My Mother works in hospice and elder care and you should hear the sad stories of missing family members who don't give a shit about "Mom" or "Grandma" 2) Again, a child should not be born with a job. Many older people have friends and a better support system than even with their own families.

We have more trees today then when this country was formed, look it up, and you know why? Because we farm trees for things and because it is a necessary commodity, growers ensure their population. I am all for renewable technology, I think thats a great thing, I think using our resources in a smarter way is necessary. But the argument of overpopulation whether you are citing the impact of increased carbon dioxide emissions from humans or whether you are making the resources argument are both flawed. This is the same tripe that has been said since the 70's and its absolute nonsense. There is no proof of either argument, just anecdotal evidence that depending on the study either supports or opposes your argument. The argument really is between renewable and non renewable resources, non renewable resources will have to be replaced by technology whether or not the population increases or decreases. It wont matter, either way it will run out, making your argument ideologically based on preconceived notions that are ill informed and not on the actual facts of population growth.
It's a choice. Not sure if she willingly made that choice or whether it was made for her but whatever… Children aren't cute accessories. The time and energy required alone should make people think twice. Problem is… most people don't think. Give Cameron credit for thinking. The world is full of ooops babies. (prob me included)

I agree with Cameron! I am 27 and unable to have kids because of a health condition and surgery to correct it. I think women have this narrow-minded sense of " to be a complete woman, I must have kids" and that just isn't how it is. Maybe back in the 40's-50's it was that way, but not so much anymore. A woman can do just fine on her own with or without kids. I feel blessed in so many other parts of my life, that kids honestly would complicate, and make it harder for me to just be me. That may sound selfish, but its better than being selfish like that and bringing kids into the world and them not being raised correctly which now happeneds way too often! especially for women who just want to live off the system and not get up, get out and get their own thing! Woman have to do what feels right for them and if thats the traditional get married have kids kind of thing, then good for them. But, its not for me!

I actually feel like at the moment woman are shunned for having children, especially at an appropriate age where we're supposed to be out slutting around instead. To be frank, the main thing that bugs me is this idea that we should be living our own lives until we're at least thirty and not having kids - that's insanity… our bodies are better equipped, we are better equipped in pretty much every aspect (other than having a career and all that stuff which in the greater scheme of things isn't as important) to have and care for children, and thirty is getting past it. I would have seen myself as having wasted years if I had've waited longer than I did to have children.

I thought she was smarter than this. Not with regard to her choosing not to have children. That is her choice. She is right, women should feel free to choose to remain childless without being judged. My problem is how she seemed hostile toward those that DO choose to have children. She made such a broad statement and a very stupid one when she said we don't need anymore kids. Worded that way it sounds like EVERYONE should stop.
If you choose not to have kids, great. However, don't devalue the value of the children of others and treat them like they are draining the worlds resources. Hopefully, it will be our children that will address the issues affecting earth's sustainability and take care of us in old age.
For those of you saying we are running out of resources, you need to self educate and get out and explore a little bit. I have traveled across this great country extensively and some abroad and let me say, there are plenty of resources. How many tons of food do you think are thrown away daily for the waste accumulated in restaurants across this country? We watse becasue we have. How much land remains uninhabited? Take the forty fwy across the country and take not that you will drive hours through empty plains, fields, hills, etc. Knoxville, 2 hours of nothing, then Nashville, and another three hours of nothing, a more hours of more nothing and you're in Little Rock and then 7 hours later of very sparse populations, you'll find yourself in Oklahoma City. Repeat the similar pattern until you get to Barstow, CA. That is just one example but resources are there. Some will be depleted but those are only areas where we have greedily abused our access to these precious resources and science and technology are already discovering new forms of energy.
