We love Beth Ditto, but she's completely off track on this one!
Or, then again, maybe she's not. Maybe she is just using the issue for media attention, which, if that's the case, then she's actually pretty smart.
Either way, the lead singer of The Gossip continues her tirade against Katy Perry, responding to Katy's recent opinion that she is not "impressed" with Beth Ditto. The feeling is most definitely mutual, as Beth explains to Spinner that she still feels Katy's success with I Kissed A Girl is "offensive to gay people".
Says Ditto, "I don't care if she writes a song about kissing a girl, but there are people who kiss girls in their everyday life, and it's not as easy as just kissing a girl and everyone loving you. It'd be really rad to hear her talk about something like that."
At the heart of it, Beth is trying to shed light on the hypocrisy of the industry, stating: "It's not about Katy Perry. It's about this song and its innocence on her part. To [Katy], it's just this party song. But as a gay person, it's like, 'Oh, of course this straight person singing about kissing a girl goes straight to Top 40 and people buy this record. Who can give a fuck about real gay people?' That's what's really painful about the whole thing. That's what makes me laugh about 'I'm not impressed.' It's like, 'Oh, that's what you think? Of course, because you never thought about what a real gay person feels, and the impact that a song like that has on the gay world in a time of crucial civil rights.' That's just one of the examples of what the mainstream is thinking about queer culture, when actually, we are completely fighting for our rights right now."
Maybe Beth and Katy should talk it out. We think Beth is coming from a good place, but if she really talked to Katy, she would realize how stupid this whole thing is.
Or maybe there would be an awesome cat fight!

Beth's got a good point. I think she should have met up with Katy and talked to her about it, instead of making it a media issue though, would have been more diplomatic. Megan Fox's comments annoyed me more than Katie's song. She talks about being bisexual and a feminist, and it comes across as attention seeking, not the truth. That dumb skank couldn't even spell either word.

You hit the nail on the head. Yes, I'm sure there is some truth to what Beth is feeling and she might take some offence, but in the grand scheme of things, is this something to get up in arms over? Of course not.
The quote above sounds more like a back peddle… Beth's attempt to sound less irrationally irrate. Yes, I can see Beth's point, most probably can. But c'mon… it's just a song. And smart people do realize Katy's song is NOT about homosexuality at all. It's about pop culture experimentation… sorry, beth, it happens. For better or worse, it does.
Beth is right. That song offended me pretty badly, and I was pretty uncomfortable with it being so popular. Gay women get fetishized, and it's not kind for Katy Perry to have capitalized on that.
Honestly, I'm ashamed to say to say that I fall into that group of people that (like Perez) who like "pop" music and liked "I Kissed A Girl" and didn't give Beth Ditto a second thought BUT also (thanks to Perez) got to listen to BD and she is awesome - not just musically but in her beliefs and she makes a great point - as a society we like to hear the "pretty" music but listen to the "words" or really hear where they are coming from - BD and KP should get together and LISTEN to each other and maybe we could all listen and learn…
