Pixar Grants Dying Girl Her Final Wish

Filed under: Inspiration > Sad Sad

up-poster.jpg

The folks at Pixar helped a dying girl fulfill her final wish when one of their employees hand delivered a DVD of the film Up to the family's residence for a private screening.

10-year-old Colby Curtin was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in December 2005, and ever since she saw a preview for Up, she'd been excited for the poignant film about a man who goes on an adventure after the loss of his wife by tying balloons to his house and flying away.

After the family had made a request that was never fulfilled for a wheelchair to take Colby to the theaters, a family friend began frantically calling Pixar as Colby's health dramatically worsened.

Finally the friend got through the automated messaging system by guessing a name. Pixar immediately sent out an employee to the girl's home in Huntington Beach armed with a DVD of the film and a gift basket of toys. The family sat around to a private screening.

Colby had difficulty keeping her eyes open through the film because of the pain she was in, so her mother narrated it to her.

Colby died 7 hours later and we hope her final moments were that much more comfortable for having her final wish granted!

Rest in peace, little angel.

aww, that was so sad! I am very impressed with Pixar. I hope it made her final hours just a little better. I am glad she was able to watch it, I bet she was so surprised. But what I want to know, is what asshole company denied that poor family a wheelchair for their little girl? I'm glad Pixar came through!

  2. 102

holy crap, this was painful to read.
I'm happy she was able to fulfill her last wish…

  3. 103

The movie was that bad? Ouch.

  4. 104

  5. 105

this story is so sad! i am sitting around complaining because i have a fat head and 10yr old kids are dying from cancer. we should all be grateful for every moment because tomorrow is not guaranteed.

  6. 106

Kudos to Pixar. I am so glad she got her wish. Such a sad story…I don't think I can handle losing my daughter.

  12. 112

This story was very touching and yet sad but I hope now she may rest in peace.

    114

Poor girl, may she now rest in peace.

  15. 115

what is sad is that she probably wasnt even able to enjoy somthing as simple as a good movie the final hours of her life… hopefully one day we will be able to provide dying children with a cure and not some DVD.

  16. 116

    aw. that's so sad.

  17. 117

Wow… I actually cried a little when I read this… A child dying is one of the most tragic things… But that was so sweet of Pixar…

  18. 118

Re: Homewrecker – You horrible person! How can you say something like that?

  19. 119

tearing! So beautiful. This was a beautiful movie, and I'm glad to hear the child's pain ended in a way that made her happy.

Re: Homewrecker – You are just soooo cool Homewrecker.

  22. 122

Ok #4 (Homewrecker), Go to hell you stupid bitch. You have no heart whatsoever. My grandmother is dying of cancer right now and she is the only mother I ever had growing up. You know what though, at least she has made it to 62, that little girl died at the age of 10. This just goes to show…life is not fair…. It should have been you, you nasty whore. Your nickname says it all. I wish I knew you, and I hope some day some woman beats the shit out of you, and hopefully you'll die a slow, lonely death someday.

  23. 123

    Awww good job Pixar :(

  24. 124

    this is so sad…

  25. 125

Re: Homewrecker – you're an idiot. that's bad fucking karma right there. A little girl dying from cancer isn't something to be insensitive about.

    RIP sweetheart

  26. 126

    God Bless You Baby!

  27. 127

Wow, what a moving story. It reminds us that anything can make children happy, even little gestures like this one in such a difficult situation, knowing that they are facing death. So sad to see angels affected by such diseases. Lots of respect for Pixar.

Re: Homewrecker – Oh and to you, when you'll hopefully be also affected by cancer, you'll wish people cared about you. Go fucking fuck yourself.

  28. 128

    omg. this is so sad.
    it made my eyes tear…
God Bless her and her family.
    thumbs up pixar :)

  29. 129

    AWWWW :(

  30. 130

    Aweeh :'(

  31. 131

  33. 133

WOW! I wasn't ready for that heart-breaker & didn't see it coming:( Just too too sad for words. I can't wait to see the movie, & will remember the story of a little girl who only wanted to see it before it was too late. PIXAR ROCKS! Life really is an emotional rollercoaster when you think about it~

  34. 134

  38. 138

i read about this. what a sad story, but death is a step of life, whether we are old or young, it still happens, and we start our next life….up

  39. 139

Re: rosiebosie – well said … well said :D

  40. 140

i just got the chills.. rip

  41. 141

Heartbreaking and life-affirming at the same time. That poor family. RIP little Colby. WTG Pixar/Disney!

Oh, and "homewrecker", you ARE a douchebag (appropriately put by "Ilikepotatochips")

  42. 142

Great for Pixar to do this, but with regards to peoples' responses to Homewrecker I'm moreso disgusted that people would wish death on someone over a throaway comment made on a website- it doesn't help matters being so petty and ugly to another person. Besides, whilst it was definitely a great gesture by Pixar, these things do happen pretty much all the time- it lends big corporations a human face, however superficial it might be. And people die every single day without getting any nice gestures.

  43. 143

Oh my god :( So sweet, so sad. It says a lot for Pixar doesn't it? Good on them.

  44. 144

I have had the honor of meeting Colby, she was truly an inspriation. May she rest in peace as she has fought a battle for most her life. She will always be in our heart…the music she so loved will play on for her forever.

  45. 145

Amazing that Pixar jumped right into action and send someone over so this little girl could have her very last wish. It is always too too sad when children die. A life not lived. Oh I'm tearing up again as I write this.

Don't know what the Homewrecker person said but it must have been awful. There is no hidden agenda here. Major kudos to Perez for posting this.

    RIP sweet little girl.

Hello all….I'm actually a friend of the Curtin family and I can't believe how big Colby's story has gotten. I'm so impressed so many people have heard about it. I just wanted to say thanks to Perez for posting the story, it's so great for people to hear her story, and even though seeing this movie was not her biggest dream, it was her final dying wish, and for Pixar to just jump and do it without any bs was wonderful. Thanks again for sharing this story, I am a fan of Perez and to see the story on here was amazing.

  92. 192

So sad..Pixar you did an amazing thing for that little girl..

  93. 193

That was the nicest, sweetest, thing that anybody can do for anybody. Bravo Pixar for making that lil baby's last hours so precious for her and her family. Death is never easy, but when U know that someone is surrounded by their family and were happy it makes everything so much better. The family and this lil girl will be able to rest knowing that she was happy.

I have no idea what Homewrecker said because P-Nasty has removed it and that is sooooooooooooooo cool. Some times it's nice to know that U realize that somethings are off limits.

    Rip colby x
