A New Statement from Perez Hilton

"Words can hurt. I know that very well, from both sides of the fence. The other night in Toronto, after feeling physically threatened by a verbally abusive Will.I.Am of the Black Eyed Peas, I chose the most hurtful word I know to hurl at him. I was in an out-of-the ordinary situaton and used a word that I would not utter under normal circumstances. My intention - however misguided it may have been - was to stand up for myself and tell this belligerent man that I had enough of his badgering and was not going to continue to let him berate and intimidate me. I wanted to hurt him with the word I chose, not anyone else. Unfortunately, the one who got hurt was me and, subsequently, a lot of other people. I wish none of it had happened. I can't take it back. I did what I thought was best at the moment to stand up for myself in a non-violent yet still assertive way. Clearly, I am not homophobic. Also, I am not nor have I ever claimed to be a spokesperson for the gay community. I am just speaking for myself, a gay man. One who is labeled "flamboyant" in the media. An American that is not granted equal rights under the law. I will continue to speak out for equality and I will continue to say things that upset both gay people and straight people. Who I am as a person and what I do for a living are two separate things. I've come to terms with all my incongruities and am proud of who I am and what I do. In closing, words can hurt. But words should not provoke someone to violence. Stripped away from the mask of Perez Hilton, I have been extremely bothered by the public reaction to my assault. Violence should never be condoned with such statements as "It's Karma" or "I don't believe in violence but….". In fact, several television and radio shows over the past couple of days echoed the sentiment "He had it coming". Would they have said the same thing if I was a woman? Would I have "deserved it" if I had been stabbed? Or shot? Or killed? I was attacked from behind without warning and repeatedly punched in the head in a cold, disgusting and unnecessarily violent manner by Polo Molina, the road manager for the Black Eyed Peas, who I did not even speak with that evening. I did not share any words with him and his assault on me was completely unprovoked. I feel like everything happens for a reason and I leave this traumatic experience as a person with more compassion. Specifically, there was an instance last year when actor Jesse Metcalfe was attacked outside of a Hollywood nightclub by a fellow entertainer. I did not condone the violence, but I did make light of that situation. I regret that. Sincerely. There are many ways to deal with disagreements, both good and bad, but violence is never the answer. Never. I now know that first-hand. It should not be condoned, promoted or accepted. No one "deserves" to be the victim of violence. No one "has it coming." NO ONE. And victims should not be ridiculed. I look forward to marching for equality in Washington, D.C. this October. And I look forward to standing up for my rights in a Toronto courtroom shortly, as I fully intend to seek every lawful remedy against the man that attacked me."

hey perez, i just wanted to say im so sorry and i completely know where youre coming from. ive been constantly bullied and harrassed since i moved to california, and im a very strong girl from it, but one thing i DONT condone is violence. violence solves NOTHING, and people that hate on you always think its "funny" or u "deserve it" but its NOT. Maybe it would be best not to call someone a homophobic slur while being threatened. You are still trying to justify your use of the word. Firstly celebrities put themselves forwards and whore themselves out to the media, this gives people the opportunity to comment. Its called freedom of speech bitches it hardly qualifies a verbal abuse. You're right, violence is NEVER the answer. Verbal abuse isn't either. It sucks that during stressful situations, we all do things we regret. No one in that situation acted appropriately, but people rarely do during situations like that.
It sucks now that every time you stand up for the gay community, you'll always have it thrown in your face that you used a homophobic slur. Don't let that stop you though - just because you said something stupid once, doesn't mean you're any less of a person or any less of an icon for gay rights. Perhaps you'll be a little less verbally harsh on people like Isaiah Washington.

As someone with a big mouth I understand how the things you say can come back to haunt you. But words never beget violence. I don't understand the whole issue of this starting over you and Fergie having a disagreement. Frankly I think its a tired story anyway. You need to master the art of tact and a little restraint. But the actions of will.i.am and his "posse" are not excused. He can say till he is blue in the face that he didn't "hit" you but I am more than certain that he told his manager to do it. Charles Manson didn't kill Sharon Tate but he was still responsible for it. The law saw it back then but I wonder if they would see it now. If people don't like what you do put it to pen. Speak and act with intelligence like not a barbarian. Violence is wrong in any situation. physical violence is wrong, i know from experience. but i also have to say that words can be very damaging as well, sometimes creating a deeper wound than a physical. you assault people everyday on this site. some of it i find funny, (which explains why i keep coming back… yes, i'm part of the problem) but i also sometimes feel guilty because some of the stuff you say is soooo incensitive and plain hurtful to your targets. i'm sorry this has happened to you, and i hope you can overcome this traumatic experience. But, (yes i say but) i also hope that this experience makes you realize how awful you have been and can be to people. a little kindness to those who have made it possible for you to be "popular" will allow you to be seen in a better light.

You may not believe in violence Perez, and that's all well and good (ooh so praise worthy, really.), but anyone with eyes can see that you're just as aggressive as any "violent" person, or what's the word you used? Do you honestly think that the words you write or say go unnoticed by those you say it about? Anyone could feel confident when they're sitting behind a computer (perhaps even enough fuel for me to write this right now), but you can't just say anything about these PEOPLE and expect to laugh it off at the after party later. Celebrities are people with their own stories, their own neuroses and you never know what cords you may strike by making some of the smart ass comments you make. So you use your notoriety for something that anyone with a basic knowledge of written language and a low enough IQ to give a shit what celebrities do on a daily basis to help your own agenda. Hilton also asserts how horrified he is at the lack of compassion, nee the sheer amount of people who look upon his being "punched in the head a few times" as a positive thing. He even admits that he's fallen privy to this himself in the past. To that, I can really only say, … it's not as much fun when you're on the receiving end, is it? Even then, his hasty lashing out at offenders and assertions over and over again that his family is "the ONLY thing that's important to him" seem cheap. I bet his family doesn't care that he spends his days making fun of how fat Kirstie Alley is, but the people he reaches out to for support and continued relevance as a celebutard might. By all means, it's entertaining to see the continued blubbering, but a little grace goes a long way.
More than anything, I wish Perez would quit aligning himself with the GLBT community. It gives off the impression that they go hand-in-hand, and it is discomforting - they loathe the shrill, wrist-flappy, Mean Girl persona he's Chris Crockered for himself as much as the Carrie Prejean supporters do, I daresay.
