A New Statement from Perez Hilton

"Words can hurt. I know that very well, from both sides of the fence. The other night in Toronto, after feeling physically threatened by a verbally abusive Will.I.Am of the Black Eyed Peas, I chose the most hurtful word I know to hurl at him. I was in an out-of-the ordinary situaton and used a word that I would not utter under normal circumstances. My intention - however misguided it may have been - was to stand up for myself and tell this belligerent man that I had enough of his badgering and was not going to continue to let him berate and intimidate me. I wanted to hurt him with the word I chose, not anyone else. Unfortunately, the one who got hurt was me and, subsequently, a lot of other people. I wish none of it had happened. I can't take it back. I did what I thought was best at the moment to stand up for myself in a non-violent yet still assertive way. Clearly, I am not homophobic. Also, I am not nor have I ever claimed to be a spokesperson for the gay community. I am just speaking for myself, a gay man. One who is labeled "flamboyant" in the media. An American that is not granted equal rights under the law. I will continue to speak out for equality and I will continue to say things that upset both gay people and straight people. Who I am as a person and what I do for a living are two separate things. I've come to terms with all my incongruities and am proud of who I am and what I do. In closing, words can hurt. But words should not provoke someone to violence. Stripped away from the mask of Perez Hilton, I have been extremely bothered by the public reaction to my assault. Violence should never be condoned with such statements as "It's Karma" or "I don't believe in violence but….". In fact, several television and radio shows over the past couple of days echoed the sentiment "He had it coming". Would they have said the same thing if I was a woman? Would I have "deserved it" if I had been stabbed? Or shot? Or killed? I was attacked from behind without warning and repeatedly punched in the head in a cold, disgusting and unnecessarily violent manner by Polo Molina, the road manager for the Black Eyed Peas, who I did not even speak with that evening. I did not share any words with him and his assault on me was completely unprovoked. I feel like everything happens for a reason and I leave this traumatic experience as a person with more compassion. Specifically, there was an instance last year when actor Jesse Metcalfe was attacked outside of a Hollywood nightclub by a fellow entertainer. I did not condone the violence, but I did make light of that situation. I regret that. Sincerely. There are many ways to deal with disagreements, both good and bad, but violence is never the answer. Never. I now know that first-hand. It should not be condoned, promoted or accepted. No one "deserves" to be the victim of violence. No one "has it coming." NO ONE. And victims should not be ridiculed. I look forward to marching for equality in Washington, D.C. this October. And I look forward to standing up for my rights in a Toronto courtroom shortly, as I fully intend to seek every lawful remedy against the man that attacked me."

After watching the video from that night it was clear to me that you were WAY out of line. People are saying you deserved what you got, not because your "gay", or because of what you do for a living, but because of the way you were talking to him with your tone, your attitude and your words. If 60% of toddlers/young children talked to their parents like that they would get a good smack in their behind, is that against the law?. (Speaking on a scenario term)
I know your doing the right thing, especially since your a public figure by charging the man that assaulted you. I believe your side of the story also, but by all means it pisses me off how you are farrrrr over the top with this story. You need to really show a little more gratitude and be a grown up towards at least Will-I-am & Fergie, because you did no right by "emotionally" abusing them, that was just childish and UN-called for! What happened to you was inexcusable, and it turns my stomach to see the constant barrage of people claiming that you "had it coming," or that you "deserved what [you] got." Celebrities live off of free exposure. Perez helps stability within their careers. Any gossip and ATTENTION is better than none. With that said, being physically attacked for what Perez does crosses the line.
I'm not 'rich' but many of those whom Perez exploits are. You would think the rich and famous would be capable of 'brushing off' such verbal criticism - however negative it may be. To NOT be capable of doing such really demonstrates how fucked our society is, in that we 'look up' to these people who can't handle negativity.

Glad you made this statement Perez, but it probably would have seemed more heartfelt if it came BEFORE all of the negative comments you received. Nevertheless, this probably was a good lesson for the people involved all around.
At the end of the day, I think that whether physical or verbal, you have to realize that sometimes there is little difference. You can say things to people about how they look that they cannot change - which in my view is way worse then punching them in the face. Sometimes I think things are funny, but sometimes you do cross the line, insulting people's faces, making them self conscious when they look in the mirror…making them think about plastic surgery. It's almost like the bully on the playground…the amazing thing is you've become so rich and famous for doing it! Perhaps a sad statement about our society. Of course this site wouldn't be so popular if you were nice to everyone, but just realize that if you are one who doesn't always treat people with respect, others may have a different way of handling it, and so it goes with the territory. Just be thankful for all of your fame and fortune, and be glad you are not really hurt very badly at all.

Words are just words? Tell that to the millions of people who go to therapy on a regular basis thanks to years of verbal abuse. Tell that to the anorexic and bulimic girls like my sister who almost kill themselves because they were called fat and ugly so many times they started to believe. Tell that to the people who suffer from anxiety and depression because they've been told all their lives that they will never be good enough. A black eye will heal within a few weeks time, but emotional wounds can take years and some never do completely heal.
I think if all this had happened to someone else you would very harshly criticize your statement.
