A new Chinese government-mandated internet filter software deems pictures of Paris Hilton, Garfield, roast pork and Johnny Depp as harmful to your moral health!
Beijing ordered that all personal computers sold in China after July 1 must have the Green Dam software installed, which is designed to block pornographic and violent images.
How is roast pork violent or pornographic?!
Critics of the software fear that it will be used to extend censorship!
When the software is installed, it blocks harmless images such as the film poster for cartoon Garfield, dishes of flesh colored cooked pork and a close up of Johnny Depp's face.
Maybe they are scared that people will start feeling their cat Italian food, roast pork may satisfy the urge for human flesh and Johnny's face would get the ladies all riled up!
With the image filter off, searches with words like "nude" are blocked, but if you're on the hunt for adult websites you can find links to soft and hardcore porn.
Looks like someone need to go back to the drawing board!
Unfortunately, the software has been programmed to filter categories including "gay" and "illegal activities", which health activists fear will limit resources to sexual health and AIDS education.
Government critics worry the "illegal activities" section will cover political and social activities not approved by Beijing, which would further impede on the freedom of their citizens!

I don't think there is truly a successful method of filtering things on the internet yet. Might as well just unplug the computer. At leat China is trying though, we have way too much messed up shit on the internet.

So, okay, I totally understand why Garfield, pork, and Paris being harmful to moral health (wait, WTF pork, really!!!), but Johnny Depp? thanks god i'm living in Hong Kong (and most of the time in US), not mainland china. I talked with my friends in mainland China about this software, and they all thought it's INSANE. but i believe when this software comes out, someone must create another software against it.
I don't agree with this kind of censorship, but in answer to how is roast pork violent? Have you ever been to a slaughter house? I think you will find that pork is the result of incredible violence.
However, it makes no sense in this context, since China sees nothing wrong with boiling live cats, skinning dogs, packing dogs, cats and other animals in tiny cages for days on end and a million other atrocities right there in street markets.

Something went wrong with the programming LOL. I'm sure the roast pork, Garfield and even Johnny Depp were programming errors, not so sure about Paris Hilton though. Ironically I just watched a Chinese movie where one of the characters was openly gay (in a positive way too). How contradictory.
The only thing i love about the Chinese is their food . . . and not all of it.
