It just doesn't make any logical sense, nor does it coincide with the recurring psychological characteristics of most people who fall into those categories. In the case of Michael Jackson vs. the Chandler family, not a single corroborating witness could be found to help prosecute the case and after raids were conducted on several of Jackson's homes, no hard evidence of sexual abuse was gathered.

As someone with 15 years in the legal industry I can tell you that people who can afford it certainly DO settle out of court to avoid further publicity. Michaels insurance company was the one that made the decision to settle out of court, they felt it was in their best interest to not garner anymore attention then neccesary. This decision was made against both Michael's and his lawyers wishes. The DA presented their evidence to two grand juries and was denied a trial both times because of lack of evidence that there was any wrong doing. GQ wrote a great article on the framing of MJ based on his first case and things you didn't see in the media during his trial. All came from court documents, no hear say.

Jackson is dead and can't sue, and under American libel standards set by their Supreme Court 42 years ago, were he alive he couldn't sue even if he wanted to, because as a public figure, and a public figure more public than any other in history, it would have been almost impossible for him to sue even if he could prove that his maligner knew that what he was saying was untrue but said it anyway with reckless disregard for the truth. With Jackson surrounded by bloodsuckers of every breed, rank and description, from crooked district attorneys to suborned employees and journalistic moles, there was so much crap in the air that it was impossible for anyone - perhaps even Jackson himself - to disentangle truth from fantasy.
