Massachusetts Is Amazing, Challenges Federal Government On "Marriage"

Filed under: Gay Gay Gay > Politik

massstateseal.jpg

The state of Massachusetts just sued the U.S. government this morning over a federal law that defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman!!!!!

As the first state in the U.S. to legalize same-sex marriages, Massachusetts state representatives filed the claim in a Boston federal court, arguing that the Defense of Marriage Act "constitutes an overreaching and discriminatory federal law."

Amen!!!!!!!!!

Before the law was passed in 1996, the federal government acknowledged that defining marital status was the "exclusive prerogative of the states." Because of this federal law's definition of marriage, "same-sex couples are denied access to benefits given toheterosexual married couples, including federal income tax credits, employment benefits, retirement benefits, health insurance coverage and Social Security payments."

We think this is a firm and excellent step in the right direction. You guys in Massachusetts are just wicked awesome!

re: Pillotop. Um, shut up. You hardly speak for the whole state, which, unlike you, is educated and accepting. You are obviously one of the hicks that rake my leaves, so shut your pie hole and move to the south….

So proud of my home state….Massachusetts is the best!

god shmod, all u religious freaks out there need to get over it already. who we love, who we marry, who we believe in, how we live, where we live, what we do, what we eat… should not be dictated by the government or other citizens for that matter.

  7. 107

That's pretty much the only thing I like about Massachusetts

The sad thing is, even though we're doing all this stuff about gay marriage, most of the people in the city are against gay marriage

  8. 108

i'm wicked proud to live in mass as well!! :-) I completely support this decision.

The Federal Government should not define marriage. If marriage is recognized as a religious union then it should be for the churches to decide. Open and Affirming churches that validate marriage between two people regardless of gender should be acknowledged legally as married. If you do not want to get married in a church then you should have a legal union. Marriage is a legal contract to form a family with greater expectations and dependency on the other partner. Legally, they should not have pre-nups if they divorce. You should not enter into such a union with fail safes. If you want a pre-nup get a legal union. There are gay couples in my church that have been together over 40 years. If the Congregation supports their marriage, then they should have legal recognition. How can any person say they are less married than some 20 somethings that pick a church for their wedding just because it will look good in pictures and then you never see them again? Where is the sanctity in that marriage? For nay sayers spouting religion, just remember why this country was founded. You can do whatever you want in your religion but "Don't Tread on Me"….Congregationalist and Federalist.

While we're at it, lets just change the definition so that people can marry animals. Heck, the current definition of marriage discriminates against people who love animals, too!

  14. 114

With the state your country is in economically, I think this is the most PETTY thing to be worrying about. The state has more important matters to attend to. Sorry to say. I love how gay people think it is ok to infringe on our rights, but holy hell when you "infringe" on theirs. Get over it. Deal with more important matters for Godsakes!

Re: amber84 – With the state the US is in economically, the US Congress should not be worrying about where the water found in water bottles comes from, but they are. I saw on the news that they have Congressional hearings about where bottle water comes from. :-) (i read your comment and thought i should share this with you. You probably don't care anyway. Oh well.)

Don't insult us by using the word "God" and referring to the Bible … while also typing the words "dumbfucks" "queers" "douchebag" "atheist scumbag" etc etc etc.
    .
You are Webster's definition of HYPOCRITE …

  21. 121

Re: jenniewest – Would you agree with the statement that current Defense of Marriage Act legislation is preventing members of your church from the full expression of their faith because it prohibits marriage?
    =
I suspect you might agree … and will confess it has been my hope that one of the next challenges to DOMA would be based on the its unconstitutional restriction of religious expression.

  22. 122

    i love living in MA.

  26. 126

Re: Catholic Momma – the defense of marriage act was proposed while clinton was running for re-election. he had to pass it in order to be re-elected. its some bulllllllll shit

  27. 127

Re: amber84 – i don't understand how that is "infringing" on your rights? they don't want you to come to their marriages, or force you to allow them to be married in your church. they simply want the title and the same rights as you. do you have a brain?

  28. 128

well since marriage is a pre-christian form of trade/barter (trading your daughter or son for livestock or land) there should be no "moral" dilemma here.
@kywildcatfan, as long as we are denied basic human/civil rights there will never be an end put to this! OH i get so worked up

  29. 129

its strange how all this backwater hill billy talk is happening and its not the 1950's! people need hobbies and mind their own fat business!

  30. 130

Hell yea, we are wicked awesome.
