Quote Of The Day

Filed under: Quote of the Day > Katie Couric

kcccc__opt.jpg

“Everyone in this room would agree that people in this country were misled in terms of the rationale of this war. I’ve never understood why [invading Iraq] was so high on the administration’s agenda when terrorism was going on in Afghanistan and Pakistan and that [Iraq] had no true connection with al Qaeda.”

- Katie Couric, speaking at the National Press Club on Tuesday evening

Saddam allowed Al Qaeda to operate freely in Iraq, Hence the term “Al Qaeda In Iraq”
    ========
That is complete bullshit and even the Bush administration never claimed this was true. Al Qaeda's there *now* that we opened the door for them. But Saddam and Bin Laden hated each other.

Re: Some Dude – By the way, every major European nation has had successful arrests and real trials of real, dangerous terrorists. People on the level of this group that the British just took down. The most ferocious terrorist arrested in the United States since 9/11 has been the shoe bomber. Ten, twenty, forty, a hundred billion dollars, a trillion dollars, and the best we have to show for it is the shoe bomber?! Republicans are bad on national security.
We have trashed the bill of rights. We have trashed the Geneva conventions. We have a president and a vice president willing to go the mat to fight for the right to torture people.
We have spent a fortune on illegal wiretaps.
We have spent a fortune on collecting everyone’s telephone data.
And what have we achieved by all of this?
A quagmire in Iraq. Dishonor. Debts. An empowered al Qaeda. A new war in Lebanon. The inability to stand up to Iran and North Korea. Osama bin Laden at large, an inspiration to extremists everywhere.
Republican are unimaginably bad on national security. Say it loud. Say it often, it’s the truth, Republicans are bad on national security.

Well, NO DUH! Talk about stating the obvious. Question, why didn't she have the courage to say this before, ie: before the war started and something could have been done? She is a symptom of a culture of oppression in this country, where opposing an injustice will get you labelled a traitor.
The irony is, this country was built by people who stood up against oppression and for tolerance (except against Native Americans).

Re: Qadi Khouric – The Bush administration radicalized Hamas. Hamas was elected. Sworn to the destruction of Israel or not, they should have been encouraged to become responsible players with carrots as well as sticks. Instead the administration put them up against the wall, hoping to starve the Palestinian people into voting for a different group. Would that work if someone tried to do it to us?
Bush and the Republicans tied down our forces in Iraq while Iran and North Korea invested in nuclear technology. That made North Korea feel secure enough to test ICBMs. If they had been successful, they would have had a delivery system for their nuclear weapons. That would be incredibly bad for national security. Iran, with American forces tied down in Iraq, feels secure enough to defy the UN as well as the US. Very bad for national security.

Guess she didn't care about all the Iraqi women raped every day or the thousands of Iraqi intellectuals Saddam murdered or the men who disappeared or the gassed Kurds. Maybe when she was a cheerleader at UVA she got inside info from the FBI. Dear ass-terisk - Yes until YOU step away from ALL THINGS PETROLEUM BASED. The WORLD will NEED OIL to FLOW FREELY, Iraq being a CRITICAL point in that FLOW OF OIL. Again READ the Carter Doctrine Written by the Democratic God Jimmy Carter. Understand it, THEN whine.

I suggest stripping off ALL your clothes, as they ALL contain Petroleum byproduct. Get off your PLASTIC Computer, WALK (your bike contains rubber) your naked self out to the woods. Kill an animal to eat another to make a teepee out of and continue to live off the land.
    Otherwise get over it.
I figure you will probably go hop in your SUV drive the 1 mile to your local fast food joint and eat from plastic containers, as the typical hypocrite will.
Val - hon you honestly believe the "British" did this ALONE?
    The Germans? Your delusional.
Nope - Your hatred for Bush has you delusional as well. Al Qaeda has been in Iraq since WELL BEFORE Sept 11th 2001, it's widely documented do your homework. Do you not remember in the first months of the Iraq war we pulled apart a 737 fusilage used by AL QAEDA in Northern Iraq to train?

The fact that this is a quote of the day is quite disturbing. EVERYBODY IN THE WORLD ALREADY KNOWS THIS!!! FOR YEARS NOW!!!…But America still has to discuss whether this is the case or not. Just accept it and go on and stop embarrassing your country on a daily basis. The reason you're being killed in Iraq is because people don't like to be occupied. Period. Not because of Al-Qaida. Just think of it the other way around….if another country invaded yours because of no reason what so ever…you have a big mouth as it is and you're not even the one who is occupied but the one who is occupying. STOP WATCHING THAT THING YOU CALL JOURNALISM.. AND START THINKING FACTS!

The Persian Gulf region was first proclaimed to be of national interest to the United States during World War II. The Persian Gulf region continued to be regarded as an area of vital importance to the United States during the Cold War. Three Cold War United States Presidential doctrinesthe Truman Doctrine, the Eisenhower Doctrine, and the Nixon Doctrineplayed roles in the formulation of the Carter Doctrine.

President Carter, January 23, 1980: "Let our position be absolutely clear: An attempt by any outside force to gain control of the Persian Gulf region will be regarded as an assault on the vital interests of the United States of America, and such an assault will be repelled by any means necessary, including military force.

Carter's successor, President Ronald Reagan, extended the policy in October 1981 with what is sometimes called the "Reagan Corollary to the Carter Doctrine" President Reagan, in October of 1981 extended the doctrine to allow the use of military actions and support to protect against internal or local threats.

And hence you end up where we are today, EVERY President since WWII has known this. Why can't modern Libs grasp it?

As in Iraq, democratic elections have produced an Islamic government at odds with the US and its plans. So while Bush pushes for elections as a cover for his imperialism, he is blind to the dangers of religious populism in the Middle East. Not only that, he continually undermines any moderate and secular forces in the region by acting domineeringly himself or by allowing US client regimes to do so (particularly Israel). As a result, the influence of fundamentalist parties has increased, as has terrorism.

And judging from comments on your site most of your readers are either ignorant or, unfortunately, only read or watch left wing liberal propaganda sites — CNN, MSNBC, NBC, CBS. Media bias is rampant and the vast majority of it is left wing. Shame on all the journalists and shame on the people who believe their garbage. Investigate, read all the sites — liberal and conservative — and make up your own minds. These media whores feed you garbage.

I am so glad CBS news ditched that mummy Dan Rather for the head cheerleader of the JV football team. I mean between her, Oprah and Rosie they collective break about 120 points of IQ. It’s breathtaking to have such intelligent, attractive and worldly women speaking on geopolitics. With Hillary running for President the future looks bright pilgrims. Re: suzanne
Yo, Katie isn't the one who needs to do research. The really was deliberately misled about Iraq, what, you didn't hear? A secret document in England called the Downing Street Memo revealed that they had already decided they wanted a war, and they weren't even going to consider other options. That's just the tip of the iceberg. US and UK advisors said that Saddam had no WMDs, but they found people to tell them what they wanted to hear. Saddam had no links to Al Qaeda either — and people who watch Fox News STILL think he did. Add it all up and you have a war based on lies. So actually Katie's right on the money. That's why she's a national journalist, it's her job.

Saying that Christians cannot be liberals is so ignorant that you need to go back and think about what a Christian is. Not only am I Christian but I am American, and apparently the conservative, Nazi's bible belt, "Americans" only think there is one way to think and real Americans know that there are many different opinions out there. Thank you for saying, "good luck in hell you ugly asshole licking liberal", because that was really Christian of you. That proves my point that the right wing Christians have no idea what it is to be Christian, because I guarantee you Jesus would have never said that. Also, just a side note. Have you ever attended a lecture where 99.99% of Mulims preach love and peace to EVERYONE? I am not Muslim, But I did tak the time out to learn more about it. It is a Beautiful faith as is Christanity and Judism.

Please stop spewing the hate and look at what your OWN country has done to many innocent people all over the world.

Funny how when Americans or Israilis attack its called "an defensive" But when a Muslim country attack, its called Terroism.

It must be nice for the democrats and liberals to always have someone and/or something to blame everything on. I do wonder however, if the next president is democrat, who will you all blame everything on?
The truth is, we went into war believing that this was the same country as it was during WWII. Meaning, that it was a country full of people who had national pride and a sense of right and wrong. So now we are a country whose military is at war, not a country at war.
But if you guys are comfortable with people genuinely wanting to kill you, your family, and your friends simply because of your beliefs then it makes sense that you don't agree with this war. Me, I have this strange need to feel safe for my friends and family. And any person or group that wants to destroy those dear to me because of religion and ideologies is deemed unsafe and unstable in my eyes.

Saddam Hussein blew off weapons inspectors and ignored 7 U.N. resolutions ordering weapons inspections. He was a documented genocidal maniac. It had been known since the Clinton administration that Al Queda had training camps in Iraq, and that Saddam committed mass murder with gas, bullets, hangings, and rapes, and every other imaginable crime. Mr. Clinton had known this while in office. Too bad he didn't have the backbone to do something about it. It was his option to let Saddam continue weapons build up, and make a mockery of the U.N. resolutions. Rationale for invading? Huh? How soon we forget.

Re: NEOCONS – No but what I do see is EVERYDAY Liberals mis-use the term NeoCon.

"Neoconservatism is a political movement that emerged as a rejection of liberalism and the New Left counter-culture of the 1960s.The term neoconservative was first used derisively by democratic social-ist Michael Harrington (Go Figure) to make clear that a group, many of whom called themselves liberal, was actually a group of newly conservative ex-liberals
The name eventually stuck, both because it was reasonably accurate, and because neoconservatives came to accept that they were, in fact, conservative. The idea that liberalism "no longer knew what it was talking about" became one of the central themes of neoconservatism, and by the 1980s, being considered a conservative was far from an insult.

But good liberals please do feel free to continue using your inaccurate hate speech. It shows the lefts true colors and confusion.

Re: Max Sawdust! – George Bush and the Republicans squandered America’s power and prestige. Before 9/11 most people in the world probably thought that America’s intelligence services were able and astute, agencies to be feared. The Bush administration has made them appear bumbling and inept. They did this, first, by ignoring their warnings and then, second, by making them the fall guys for 9/11.
After 9/11 most of the world feared America’s wrath and America’s might. By failing to get bin Laden and his gang, then by attacking the wrong country, unleashing chaos, and getting our armed forces into a situation that they can’t win, the administration showed the world they have less to fear than they imagined.
The Bush administration empowered Hezbollah. The ‘insurgency’ in Iraq was Hezbollah’s textbook and their inspiration. If Iraqis could do that to Americans, surely they could do the same to the Israelis. And they have. It’s not yet on the record, but it’s clear from everyone’s conduct, that the administration encouraged the Israelis to ‘unleash’ their forces against Hezbollah. They probably thought Israel’s modern hi-tech armies would quickly smash their enemy.

I am a staunch and longtime Republican and I would like to make it clear George Bush and his neocons do not represent our party. We are against Big Government, while Mr. Bush adds more power to The White House every day. We are for fiscally responsible spending, while Mr. Bush is bankrupting our nation with pandering tax cuts and spendthrift outlays. We are for state's rights while Mr. Bush's federal government often intervenes in state affairs. Do not judge us by this new breed of greedy warmakers or Mr. Bush. That's not what we're about.

Re: Max Sawdust! – The Bush administration radicalized Hamas.

    Re: Gore was President

WASHINGTON, March 14, 2007 - Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton

She said in the interview that there were "remaining vital national security interests in Iraq that would require a continuing deployment of American troops.

The United States security would be undermined if parts of Iraq turned into a failed state "that serves as a petri dish for insurgents and Al Qaeda, she said. It is right in the heart of the oil region, she said. It is directly in opposition to our interests, to the interests of regimes, to Israel's interests."

Sounds like she understands quite a bit better than the rest of her loyal party.

The globalization of the Carter Doctrine began in the mid-1990s, when the Clinton Administration determined that the Caspian Sea basin-until 1992 under the effective control of the Soviet Union-could become a major source of oil for the United States and its allies, thereby helping to lessen U.S. dependence on the ever-turbulent Persian Gulf. We now protect the worlds oil all day everyday.

Not likely. Certainly any president would have attacked Afghanistan, since the Taliban openly acknowledged they were sheltering Bin Laden. That's a good idea. When miners are trapped below ground, we should just say "Hey, that was yesterday. Time to move on." And when an airplane crashes, we shouldn't bother to attempt rescue of survivors. That's so totally five minutes ago. And when this nation is engaged in a disastrous war we can't afford, putting us in greater danger here at home every day, we should just flip our cute blonde ponytails and say: "Hey, Mr. Poutyfaces, this is boring. Let's talk about me, instead!" That's the ticket. Airhead.
