Making The World A Better Place

As if we needed any more reason to love her!

Shakira has just pledged over $45 million to charity.

Through the Latin America for Solidarity Foundation, ALAS, which means wings in Spanish, which she co-founded, she will donate $40 mill to repair damage caused by an earthquake in Peru and a hurricane in Nicaragua.

She also announced on Thursday, during a chat at Bill Clinton's big pow wow in NY, that she was also spearheading a three-year, $5 million commitment for projects for children in the region, where about 40 percent of the population lives in poverty.

"I've seen first-hand many of the challenges facing Latin America," she said in a statement. "These are challenging problems that no one person can address, but working together everyone can help make a difference."

Amen, Shaki. Amen!

Not for anything, but rich spanish people only give away their money to poor spanish people and oddly enough rich american people only give all their money away to poor people from other countries as well- so who the hell is giving their money to the poor in America, or adopting American children and giving them a better life? Everyone can live hear but noone wants to help us out. Well when I have the means to believe me I will help out America. Not giving back to a country that gives so much to its inhabitants is a disgrace.

How sad that those of you who are making negative remarks about Shakira can't appreciate someone using their celebrity to help. Whether or not you think she can sing is not the issue. The issue is helping others. Obviously you are not mature enough to be grateful that people with money are helping others. Instead of berating someone else, you might want to spend your time helping someone or giving whatever you can give. Congrats to Shakira for using her down time between cds for giving to others and to improve herself intellectually by taking a class at UCLA. The "girls gone wild" set in Hollywood could learn a few things from her example.

Now I can't believe all the supposed "knowledge" you have about Colombia. As a Colombian I would like to defend this view.
Now, Shakira was not brought up in rough surroundings - it's not like they were shooting up people in the street left and right. She comes from a well off Lebanese family from Barranquilla - I have friends that know her very well. Anyway, I come from a middle class family and growing up I didn't even see any of the problems going on in the country. People in Colombia actually live a normal life, have families, go to school, become educated hard working people.
Many amazing people have come out of my country - Gabriel Garcia Marquez is a writer that is a noble prize winner, Manuel Elkin Patarroyo is a scientist who also has a nobel prize for discovering the vaccine to malaria! Many other great people have come out and are still doing great things in Colombia and all over the world.

I'm not particularly fond of Shakira's music - but she's been famous and has gone multi platinum all over latin america before even touching the US market. I really respect the fact that she has pledged on this, it shows she really cares, also she does it with her own people, the people she has closer to her heart. She has no need to go around the world, be photographed doing things or make millions of interviews. This is the way charity work should be done. Thanks Shakira!

having a foundation in her control just means that legally she needs to spend just 5% for charitable purposes. She may be generous or she may be moving her money into the foundation so she doesn't have to pay taxes.

Sad thing, Michael J fox bought an expensive apartment near wall st in NYC through his foundation.

Take it with a grain of salt.

Re: nicole – first of all, south america is a part of america. it's time you fucking ignorant shits realized that. second, rich americans give money to black people because they feel guilty and are otherwise labeled racist. those who give to other countries give mostly to africa because that's where the hype is now. there's poverty all over the world. is the united states doing anything to help? did you know that daily, mcdonalds franchises make enough food to feed the hungry WORLDWIDE? not just once, but three meals. a day. do you know how much of that gets thrown out? get off your fucking high horse. you who consider yourselves the epitome of developed countries. how many children die daily from starvation in africa? south america? india? now how many die in the us? those who can, help. shakira is a saint. i love angelina jolie, but she's a media whore, and she's building up her own 5 star rainbow orphanage. why save hundreds of children ffrom starvation when i can pick a cute one to take home with me instead? that way i look good, and the kid stays as a constant reminder to the world: i'm angelina, BITCH!

i piss on you, nicole. not for nothing, but you make me sick.

It's so sad to read some of the comments here cause that makes me realize it is not true that racism is over, the only difference is that we have more rights legally speaking, but then it's still the same. I can't believe someone said so many things about a country he/she doesn't even know, I'm from Latin America, I live in Peru, I'm a middle class girl and I have a great life with everything I need, it's true that crime is high here but it doesn't compare to all the crazy people and serial killers in USA, I've read amazing articles of people killing their own family because they're mentally ill or because of money, and that happens frequently; so you can't say a thing about colombians killing people like animals cause they're just a group of people and they're terrorist so what were you expecting. I've met colombians and they're the most carismatic people in the world!!! &%$# people are all over the world every country has to deal with them it's not exclusive from Colombia and we can see a few here. I hope not all americans hate us like that cause that'll make me sadder than I already am.

Why do you keep saying she's anti-semetic????? What have she said, can anyone tell me please??? I just saw the Bill Clinton's debate and she said a great speech about helping others and how every kid's dream was important, it didn't matter were he/she was from, so I'm sure she doesn't hate jews at all. You really should watch it before talking about her cause there you can se she's authentic. For all who were saying why celebrities don't help they're own country well she said that "in America the american dream existed that she was living it and that in USA people had opportunities, people had the right of education." I think that the thing is thet the US goverment has a lot of money to help but instead they're buying weapons, and fighting in a pointless war. She did a great thing and as someone said not alone with the foundation but she work a lot to make it happen and that is even more rewarding than just giving money. I've been a fan since I was little, I know she's talented but if you don't like her it's ok but that doesn't mean you have to insult her. I don't think you have to insult Angelina either cause like her or not she's doing great things and of course she'll be photographed she's Angelina and she's with Brad Pitt!!!

Hope some of you change your mind some day
    Wish you the best
    Andrea
