Hayden is Heroic

Filed under: Hayden Panettiere > Inspiration

We have a newfound respect for Hayden Panettiere! Maybe she's not a bad girl after all?

The Heroes TV star recently went on a mission to Japan to help save the dolphins. Unfortunately, she and a few of her activist friends got into a violent confrontation with some local fisherman determined to complete their annual slaughter.

The 18-year-old actress paddled out on a surfboard in an attempt to reach a pod of helpless dolphins to stop them from being driven into a nearby cove and killed.

But she and her fellow surfers were intercepted by a fishing boat before they could reach the dolphins. The fishermen used the boat's propellers to block their way and at one point struck out with a boathook.

It was an ugly and potentially life-threatening confrontation that lasted more than 10 minutes before Hayden and crew were forced to return to the beach.

An emotional Panettiere later spoke out about the incident.

This sucks for dolphins. However, those tears at the end were not sincere. It looked like she was trying way to hard to cry. I commend anyone who brings attention to causes that are overlooked. I just don't like seeing fake people pretend that it is affecting them so much to make them cry. P.S. This really looked staged.

Way to go Perez you just won a case against Freedom of Speech but you can't join the dots to see the hidden agenda. Didn't your trip to the red side teach you anything, Only way communism can win is if the Asian people are bought down. Japan has the ability to sway China. Hate them and you are toast.

What's the quickest easiest way - dolphins. I want to save the dolphins from exploitation and cruelty. She has sunk so low to use their pain for her gain. Rot in hell Hayden. Ratings will pick up now.

What is happening to the dolphins is awful.
But it's incredibly bizarre to me that more people on this thread are bothered by the dolphins than the dozen or so racist, anti-Asian comments that are posted all over. It's incredibly hateful and disrespectful. Don't ask these men to respect dolphins if you can't even respect other people.
I never met either of my grandfathers because of the Japanese in WW2. I study war history and what happened to my family and my country is part of my consciousness almost every day. But at no point does that give me (or anyone else) license to insult an entire nation, let alone an entire race. I'm sure that these people posting anti-Asian things have hatred that streams from more things than just this video, but the rest of us shouldn't let their comments slide, let them be hateful to all the other Asian Perez-readers/Hayden-fans/whatever out there. PEREZ please delete their posts!! You should have a policy against hateful and derogatory comments.

Wow, that made me cry. Perez, I hope you don't say another mean thing about Hayden again- She has proven herself to be a decent human being. Good for her! And just a comment to all the assholes making their typical anti-American comments: Give it a fucking rest. This is a post about the slaughter of innocent dolphins. There were Americans and Australians attempting to rescue those dolphins in the video. Good for them. We should all be able to agree it's simply wrong, regardless of what country we are from. Thanks Perez, for raising the awareness.

  37. Krissy says – reply to this

    337

that is the most horrifying thing i have seen in quite a while. i still have tears running down my face from watching it. i understand that people eat cows and chickens and pigs….but killing 23000 dolphins a years fucks with the ecosystem. they are not being bred to be eaten as our farm animals are here. everything, no matter how small, plays a vital part on this earth…. it's time that we stop thinking we own the earth, because in reality, the earth owns us….we're pretty much fucked without it….respect it. It's all we've got. There is no backup.

  38. Rico says – reply to this

    338

Yes it sucks that the dolphins are being killed, but there are more important concerns out there than freaking dolphins–darfur genocide, iraq war, 3rd world starvation, climate change–will kill more dolphins than the fishermen. Tell hayden to lend her celebrity to something else. Then jump on my dolphin–I'll make it "spyhop" for her…

So save the baby dolphins, but kill the human babies, right? I'm so sick and tired of people caring more about animals than a human being. I'm against any kind of killing- especially babies. NOT justifying the japanese and their dolphin hunting, but why are americans always being world police, criticizing and judging others while we commit similar deeds? dolphin hunting is wrong in our minds because we don't eat dolphins, but yet "the deadliest catch" is a hit on discovery channel. you wanna see cruelty, visit your nearest beef slaughterhouse, where some cows aren't euthanized properly and are still alive while going through the assembly line…

  43. C. says – reply to this

    343

Re: Person. – So, we should kill endangered animals? Like primates? Because these Japanese dolphins will be endangered soon if they aren't already. There are no regulations on killing these dolphins (it's secret!)…most fishing, killing of cows, etc is regulated to protect the populations and it has regulations on how you kill them so it's humane.

I agree, some people don't have the luxury of being vegan and need meat/fish to survive, but there are right ways and wrong ways to do it.

That was really sad video footage, and as I watched it, I remember the old saying "You can judge a society by how it treats it's animals". Coming from the heart of a strong animal advocate, I feel their pain, and I too have been a crusader for the rights of animals since I was a young girl. Unfortunately as an activist or someone who deeply cares about a cause, we often times will put ourselves in danger to protect it. They all could have been seriously injured, to stop the inevitable, and though they weren't successful in their efforts, I believe that because of them people have been enlightened to the inhumane slaughtering practices that occur all over the world.

Very well said, and it is a breath of fresh air to read an intelligent and well spoken comment for once. Don't take the ignorance said here to heart, we Americans have a way of "Spewing anger", and I believe you when you say most people in Japan do not consume whale or dolphin. Unfortunately we consume many things without knowing the exact origin, and it is to no ones fault but the Government for not adequately disclosing what the food is and where it comes from. There are atrocities against all living creatures happening everyday, and everywhere, so please don't feel like the black sheep here.

    Re: save HUMAN babies
YOU should be smacked for your unnecessary generalization of abortion and your ignorant comparison to the slaughtering of dolphins. For the sake of NOT starting a Pro-Life/Pro-Choice war, I will sit back and revel in the fact that people like you are the reason why their are millions of unwanted and neglected children in the world. Abortion SHOULD NEVER be used as a form of birth control, However, if the time is not right in a woman's life to produce and bring a child into the world KNOWING she cannot be supportive and responsible, than I believe it is warranted. I also believe it is warranted in the case of the pregnancy putting the mother or child at risk for death. How dare YOU make such a wrongful comparison, especially when they have no relevance to one another. They kill these dolphins for food and profit, not to sound grotesque, but I highly doubt we are serving aborted babies upon a platter. You are so IGNORANT, I hope you understand that.

Not that I agree with what is going on, I'm proud that Hayden had the guts to take on something that's been going on for ages. This village has been killing dolphins to support their village and feed their families for millennia.

An article on this was written on MSN. I was heartbroken to hear that these killings have been going on; however, one must remember that this is the livelihood of this particular village.

Back, when it started, there was no science telling them that these creatures are the closest to human intelligence, they were just hungry. And, their mode of corralling them was created hundreds of years ago.

I am proud of Hayden's efforts, but we must also understand that this is the only means of income for this village. Come up with a better suggestion for the means to keep them alive and I'm sure the village will jump at it.

Unfortunately, there is no other means possible.

I happened to read a comment by SOCKS and I think it's ridiculous that you would even say that this problem is not as important as the rest of the problems this world is facing. It's not right to judge one problem as more important than another. Some people really love land animals and marine animals more than anything..that is their passion..& seeing these innocent & intelligent creatures being murdered is extremely painful to them. Have some respect and don't discount it just because it doesn't seem as important to you as AIDS and world hunger. although this is a horrific act (and i am in NO WAY supporting the act of killing dolphins), are killing dolphins any different from killing cows, rabbits or lobsters? yes, dolphins are known to be cute and intelligent but does that mean all cute and intelligent living creatures should be spared their lives too? that would probably include: rabbits (cute), monkies (dont the french and chinese eat them), calf (veal, baby cow)….

perhaps, we should all become vegetarians. then we could start complaining about the killings of the poor dolphins. AND what about the killings of the elephnats JUST for their tusks. that is cruel and i think illegal in africa.

I have NEVER done biology or any of that rubbish and even I know that fish do not have nerves (aka, cannot feel pain) and have an incredibly short memory. Dolphins are MAMMALS, and right up there in the intelligence stakes, so, basically, according to your theory, when they go one step further and start imprisoning and killing humans for their sushi…well, i guess then we would only have a right to protest that is if we protest the killing of the not-so-cute cod aswell???

This is something that needs to be brought out to light and it's nice to see somebody in Hollywood standing up for a cause and not even caring who she is or what it will do for her career. It's just a cause that deserves to be fought for and something that deserves some press. Thanks for showing this.

its cool to see celebs using their fame for something good. those japanese fisherman are so heartless but theyre not the only ones doing that. alot of peeps from china and europe and stuff do that too. what dickheads

I try to respect all cutures, but it so amazes and sickens me how absolutely heartless some of them are towards animals. Animals are abused, caged in inhumane ways to be sold at cruel street markets and here - slaughtered without a second's thought. This happens everywhere and it makes my head spin. I wish I could be at all those places to help.

    OK - a couple of things…

    1. Japan is one of the richest and most developed countries on the planet. Killing whales and dolphins is a POLITICAL STATEMENT, not a matter of starving fishermen trying to survive!! It is NOT a matter of subsistence hunting to eat, but of power-politics that the Japanese government obviously has no interest in stopping.

    2. To the Japanese people who complain that showing stuff like this encourages racism, yes it does. But for Japanese people to also say they had "no idea" that this sort of thing occurs is a crock. Australia, New Zealand and other countries in the South Pacific are disgusted by Japan's actions, so to claim ignorance is totally weak.

    3. The Japanese government's position on whaling, over-fishing and killing of everything that moves in the oceans is SERIOUSLY damaging the world's opinion of Japan. Are you suggesting that this goes unreported so the Japanese can feel good about themselves?

    4. Australia has spent millions desperately trying to build up the number of endangered whale species in the Southern Oceans, only for Japan to say "great - now we can start commercial whaling again!". How the fuck dare they??

    5. Whether or not whaling & dolphin killing is a "traditional" activity for the Japanese is a seriously contented point, since it was really only with WWII that the U.S. encouraged whaling on a large-scale to feed a population defeated in war. Since then, it has become a bizarre political sticking point that the Japanese government REFUSES to concede, despite it damaging Japan's reputation in the region, and around the world.

    6. Most people in Japan DON'T eat whale or dolphin, and DON'T support whaling. So why the hell does this continue? Where is the pressure from Japanese voters to discontinue this activity? Where are the protests from Japanese people against their own government? Why the endless pleads of ignorance etc.? Is it somehow a cultural thing not to challenge authority? Because I honestly cannot see what possible benefit this gives the Japanese people, as it damages tourism, the economy, and global relations.

It seems that the only message that gets through is economic - so boycott Japanese products and tourism, because it's clear that the opinions of other governments, conservation groups and concerned citizens mean fuck all.

i just started to read some of the comments made by fellow perez readers and i was very distrurbed by the numerous racial remarks about asians and the japanese ppl. although most of the killings occur in this japanese village, there are several other countries that participate in the massacre of dolphins (united kingdom-english channel). and note that the entire country is not involved with these killings, its this village. also….just like the rest of us, the japanese ppl (other than the ppl in the village) are unaware of the dolphin killings.

and as for this awful event (murdering dolphins), we need to come up with an alternative solution as other ppl have commented. these ppl in the village need to "fish" in order to survive. they are not doing this for the sport or to hang a dolphin fin on the wall above their fireplace. perhaps, we need to convince governments (UK, Japan, other nations) how toxic dolphin meat is (mercury poisoning…..very bad for the immune system especially among children and fetuses).

I think if it it is the ocean and isn't a ship, Japan will eat it. They even hunt endangered species like whale for food, but I've never met a single person who actually likes the taste of whale. I never see Dolphin meat anywhere in public so I imagine it's probably eaten as a rare, expensive, delicacy in top restaurants like blowfish which is poisonous. Dolphin meat itself can be toxic, so it probably has nothing to do with a taste and is eaten because it is 'taboo'. Trust me, people here love their cute animals and don't support dolphin murder. There is no huge market for dolphin meat here or anything, so killing dolphins isn't actually feeding the children of Japan.

If most of you don't eat whale or dolphin meat then what are you doing to stop this? DO SOMETHING!!! Americans are pretty stupid to make this about some actress, their values are different to the rest of the world so don't take their comments to heart. I realise this is not what everyone in Japan is doing but you as a nation and a generation have to do something. Just because it is been that way forever doesn't make it right. Stop them dying, do something, stand up!
