"From the moment I began my work on behalf of Malawi's ONE MILLION orphans, people have asked, "Why did you choose Malawi?" I always answer, "I didn't. Malawi chose me." Malawi is one of the most beautiful countries in the world. Unfortunately, it is also one of the poorest - suffering from famine, drought, extreme poverty, and deadly diseases like HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis. All of which could be treated with proper health care and education, if it were available.
Through the Raising Malawi: Orphan Care Initiative, Michel Berg and I have committed to doing all that we can to help this small country in desperate need.
We have met with world experts in healthcare, economics, education, and international development - leaders like Dr. Jeffrey Sachs and Dr. Paul Farmer, who have given a voice to the most underprivileged sectors of society. Together we are working to raise the quality of life for a generation of orphaned and vulnerable children.
Now I'm asking you to join us.
With one of the highest HIV/AIDS rates in the world and one of the lowest rankings in the Human Poverty Index, Malawi and her children are at the heart of the humanitarian crisis in sub-Saharan Africa. The challenges facing these children are unimaginable. Everyday in Malawi hundreds of children die from preventable illness, thousands are affected by abuse and neglect, and millions face a lonely struggle for survival without parents, or adult supervision. At Raising Malawi, we believe in turning these challenges into stepping stones.
Malawi is country with incredible promise. Malawians possess resiliency and great spirit. If we give them a chance to achieve lasting sustainability through smart solutions and the proper support, we will in fact raise Malawi. Why can't these celebrities help our children in the United States? There are so many homeless people including whole families, children, etc. here, and they decide that maybe they would look better going to other countries to help. I think it's great that they are helping these kids, but when they ignore their own country, I think it's sad. Madonna is from Detroit and Detroit is so poverty stricken. Shouldn't she help out the homeless in her hometown? I guess she's ashamed of where she's from.

Not that I am trying to minimize the problems in other countries, but don't you think we should start taking care of our own before we start supporting other countries. We have a serious issue with our health care system, driving millions of average americans to loosing everything they own, bankruptcy, living in cars, boxes, and if their luck shelters. Some of our folks are even being denied critical procedures because their healthcare plan (if they even have a healthcare plan) has reached its limit or doesnt cover the surgery.
And gosh forbid I mention the US unemployment rates, foreclosures, our failing educational system or best yet…. the HUGE deficit we are in because Bush thought it was a fine idea to go into another country and force them to reform to our idea of government (gees and we had to go and be ambitious, have our own civil war instead of having another country come over take out our crazy leader and send in their troops).

I was never a big fan of Madonna's music (with the exception of "Cherish" and "Take A Bow") but I am a fan of Madonna's humanitarian efforts. It's one thing to to just write a check, but Madonna has given her time by taking many trips to Malawi and adopting a child. You have to have a HUGE heart to raise a child, much less a child that you did not give birth to. Madonna is far from perfect but she at least is doing her part to make this world a better place.

First of all, I'm not one to post on places like this ( I just like to browse through the silly gossip stuff when I'm bored in the office) But after reading the piece on Madonna and Raising Malawi, and seeing the comments left by people, how could I not leave a comment of my own. First of all, I am by no means a wealthy person financially. Luckilly I was raised by a single mother who showed me love and taught me compassion. I saw her struggle to make ends meet. But I saw her belief in people as well. Even when we were at our poorest, we would find the time to volunteer and fundraise for a myriad of causes in our community. It's true that we have problems in our own country, but seriously, our countries problems pale in comparison to those living in third world conditions.
I don't blame Madonna for moving her family elsewhere, if these are the values our proud nation holds. Sure this is a woman who capitalized on sex and scandal, but when you have children, your perspectives and desires change. She has already given a lot of her own money and time to this cause. Sure she has tonnes more, but why would she give it all when she also has a family that she needs to provide for. Also, it is really unrealistic to tell someone to go buy a country and fix it themself. The reasons for Malawis problems have to do with more than just a lack of money. It's lack of education. Lack of natural resources. Lack of reliable government. Lack of compassion from other people who live in the same world, but can't see past their own spoiledness to care. So while some of the people sit here and bitch about latest Britney Spears' vagina sighting, I already have my plane ticket to go back and help more in Malawi. Have a nice day, year, and life.
